Aside from Coady who has been in poor form all season and should really consider retirement,  and VK, who, for me, hasn’t grown to the PL level yet, and adding Fatawu, which I’m sure you’d do had he been fit, I think we have no more premium players. We will go down if no good players will be added, I now realize that with certainty. Today was the watershed match.

Justin is having a shocking time but has never done that before. There must have been a shout.

A really tough one to take today.

 

I didn't really mind us losing badly to Newcastle, they are a great team especially at home and we just aren't close to that level.

 

Whilst I was openly firmly Cooper out which I think was the correct decision, I was on the fence with RVN, we simply didn't have the evidence to really know either way, the one thing we all agreed on was it's a risk and up until today there have been reasonable positives to be excited out mixed in with some very similar negatives to cooper.

 

Today, however was an absolute disgrace from all involved, I know it's been done to death on Ward, but he quite simply should not be playing professional football at any level, it's quite simple. I don't normally condone booing players during a game, I've even had arguments with people in the stands about it, but with Ward it's different he has been milking us for years and imo was probably the biggest reason we got relegated outside of rodgers checking out. There's alot of bad blood there and even if you think he is a capable keeper, there's just too much history there, any proper club would have had him booted out the door last year when enzo made it clear he was no where near up to standard even for the championship.

But we are a soft touch, which optimises Top, he's a lovely person, but so soft and that is so symptomatic of how we operate as a club, how nice we've been to players, huge contracts, contract renewals when they didn't deserve it, allowing players to run them down instead of saying "are you in or out?"

 

On to RVN, today is the first time I've been really worried, it was a slightly dodgy team selection and ward dug him in to a hole, but the reaction from the players and the changes were just so poor. I think we have to remember he's "new" to management and can absolutely turn this around, but it feels like an it's an open experiment that needs time, something we don't have about would be better suited in the championship.

 

Is it over for us? Absolutely not, if RVN can be self reflective and learn from his mistakes in a way cooper could not, then there's still time. But if he goes dogmatic and keeps making poor selections then it's only going one way and tbh we will fully deserve it. Cooper set things in motion and we are asking a novice with minimal experience to turn this around in the hardest league in the world.

 

Sorry for the long post, it's just thoroughly depressing today, when you cant even get up for such an important game against a relegstion rival who themselves were pretty bad, its never a good sign.

 

I've always felt we had enough if we could get the right man in to sort it out. I think today is the first time I'm accepting we might be cooked and it's just a bit rubbish.

Honestly the short fall with Ward, Ayew and our defense is obvious, however honestly our midfield is one of the main issues, Skipp is a non entity, doesn't do anything but the one I'm really disappointed in is Mavididi. He's like a petulant child, the amount of times he gave up on stuff, didn't try, didn't run, didn't attempt to go forward with ingenuity, creativity and effort. He is so predictable. Problem is Kasey is equally as bad (although he does work much harder). Our wide players just don't do anything, oh how we miss Fatawu. Mavididi is a detriment to our team at the moment.

Admittedly, as mentioned in another thread, that I normally watch the MOTD highlights via the BBC football page - but it wasn't advertised on it today, for some reason, and so assumed that MOTD wouldn't be on at all today.

Having watched the highlights, the 3 goals are even worse on second watching. Then we've had 2 great opportunities  to take the lead and then equalise/ pull it back to 2-1.

Poor signings. Ayew, BDR, should not be on the pitch at the same time. My word, we collect trash. DoF needed who knows what the hell he's doing! 

 

We lose the next 3 is almost a given and how do you recover confidence after that? Shame we can't terminate contracts of deadwood.
