WTF are they thinking pitting Piastri ahead of Norris anyway?

Its a shitshow.

Norris specifically asked to be pitted 2nd himself with some bs justification "to protect Oscar from Leclerc" (why would Norris care if his WDC rival got overtaken, especially given Mclaren don't have to maximise points with their 400 point lead in the constructors).

He wanted to gamble on a red flag or safety car (the latter was actually impossible cause Max had already covered the 14 seconds a SC pit stop would take).

This is now the 3rd or 4th instance this season where Mclaren have pulled "team orders" to make it "fair" that have directly benefited Norris. If I was Piastri I would honestly not have complied today, Verstappen said he wouldn't have either had it been him. This is a 6 point swing that the team decided to let go in favour of Norris. What's next - retire the car if Lando crashes to make it fair?

I don't think Verstappens opinion on whether to play the team game is worth much tbh. If he was in Piastri's shoes today and Red Bull didn't order them to switch back (like that'd ever happen) every single toy from Max's pram would be on the floor, no "HA's" to be seen.

Most teams would have done what McLaren chose to do today, more so when they are the only two in the title fight. The difference is most other teams wouldn't have the luxury of being able to simply swap them back without losing positions. The race was effectively over by the time they pitted, when it's out of the driver's hands I think them swapping cars is justified. It's not dissimilar to Hungary last year when again McLaren were trying to be too clever and that day Piastri was given preferential treatment in the middle of a Lando Vs Max title fight.

Just doesn't help with this "British bias" narrative created by Red Bull in years gone by which has now stretched to McLaren for no great reason. Imagine Piastri's engine going up in smoke last week instead, the bandwagon would have loved that one. If Piastri was in Norris' position today and they switched them back around, it'd be all "sensible decision" from the same people up in arms today.

Stupid decision.

Turning into PR decisions.

Imagine Senna letting Prost through if he had a bad pit stop!

True but the agreement was always to let Norris back past. One dodgy wheel gun shouldn't override that agreement.

It’s a team sport, if somebody messes up or equipment fails then that’s part of the game.

Pit stops are a part of racing.

Let's imagine this scenario at Abu Dhabi - Piastri leads and is in position to take the WDC, comes in to pit, the stop is slow resulting in Norris taking track position and the WDC lead.

I don't for a single second think that Mclaren would ask Norris to let Oscar by for the WDC, not a chance.

It's blatant favouritsm and a collossal cock up by the team. Norris wanted to go 2nd, it was his call to gamble on a red flag or a safety car, there wasn't any threat from Leclerc on Piastri and even if there was, why would Norris care.

Also if one of the cars has a mechanical failure, that's a cock up by the team as well, is it not? Would the other driver then be required to put it in the wall out of solidarity and fairness?

What a crazy session.

Max on pole but fantastic by Sainz and Lawson.

If the race is anything like that they will need extra broadcasting time !!

I think almost every driver hit a wall at some point .

Wouldn’t like to predict what will happen .

Verstappen will win - got a nice little buffer with Lawson and Yuki up there too just to try and help out .

But still expect if everything is normal McLaren to be top 3-4.

I mean knowing Sainz’s luck his car will break down early.

Can't see anything but an easy Max win unless there's drama like yesterday in quali.

Or if he unusually makes a mistake. Hard for the McLarens to get up the track.
