Use that money and private funds (Middle East states would be all over it) to build a massive new airport or expand Gatwick, basically anywhere away from a large urban dwelling (way outside the M25). - instead of this ‘varsity line’ crap. High speed rail, London to Edinburgh along the east coast, and a line that joins it going along the north - Liverpool - Manchester - Sheffield/Leeds (branches) - York. And of course finish off HS2 as so desired. - Give each major city license to build or expand a light rail/tram system. A caller to LBC suggested closing RAF Northolt and using that as the 3rd runway. They could build a tunnel between the airports HS2 style quicker and cheaper and still call it Heathrow. Thought it made a lot of sense. 3

The sale of the real estate wouldn't generate enough money to build a new 3 runway airport plus the road network and transport links around it. Doesn't make any financial sense. Surely it would pay for itself in future? and literally just sell the naming rights to emirates too. “Emirates Gatwick” sounds cool

This isn't true, its just politicking, but if it was, it goes to show that they (RR) has no idea that technology changes faster than UK infrastructure projects and you have to just get on with them if they are beneficial. ... I'm not sure that the stance of any major party on environmental issues and infrastructure is better than the current incumbents tbh, but it just so happens that is a pretty low bar to clear compared to most developed countries outside the US.

I think her claims about sustainable aviation are very dubious and won't age well. Heathrow might be justifiable for other reasons, I don't know - I don't live in London or anywhere near it so no skin in the game. But if we were going to do it we should have just gone ahead after the first decision was made in 2009 rather than the hokey-cokey we've had since. Same with HS2. 1

Lionator Posted 30 January 2025 Posted 30 January 2025 This press conference is a disgusting sham. Just going out and trying to blame EDI policy for the plane crash based on absolutely nothing.

Bellend Sebastian Posted 30 January 2025 Posted 30 January 2025 One of the tech bros is currently weighing up whether he should pay someone fifty million dollars just to slaughter them all and be done with it. It won't be Musk but I wouldn't bet against the other two

Unfortunately for the world, Trump is none of these things. He's an ignorant, but very wealthy, knobhead that thinks he can do as he likes without consequences. The only thing he wants is power at any cost. And that's the scary thing. 4

He is quoted as saying. “A group within the FAA determined that the workforce was too white, then they had concerted efforts to get the administration to change that and to change it immediately,” he added. “This was in the Obama administration.” He might as well have said I think any non whites are just too stupid to be trusted with such a responsible position. Woodrow Wilson eat your heart out.

It was obviously a complete balls up by the helicopter pilot (it’s tragic but it happens) and all these guys are harping on about is nonsense about how DEI policy means that people with profound learning disabilities become air traffic controllers 🤷🏻♀️

Trav Le Bleu Posted 30 January 2025 Posted 30 January 2025 (edited) In past tragedies where world leaders come out and say things such as, "this is a terrible tragedy. Our thoughts and prayers are with the families of the deceased at this difficult time", I've always thought, well, of course you'd say that, not big news, what else can you say? Enter Donald Trump.
