In more positive news, concerted efforts on the cards to reduce the stubbornly high (yet weirdly accepted at societal level as a sort of background hum of carnage that doesn't really matter) level of deaths on UK roads:

It is a bit bizarre that people can pass a test in a rural area with about three roads and then be expected to drive absolutely fine at night, in the rain, on a major motorway. A better plan for learning doesn't sound like a bad thing at all.

A lot of accidents at this time of year are recently passed learners who have never driven in a slippery road.

On one of my lessons the snow was coming down so fast that the wipers couldn't clear the window properly so I had to pull over, which my instructor agreed with.

Ive listened to the minister this morning and they have no idea whether the changes will make any difference.

I suspect the current number of deaths caused are not particularly by newly passed drivers nor are they by people that are 1-2mg over the drink drive limit.

I think we should congratulate the government for trying to find a problem to fit their solution.

Its a shame they haven't produced a properly thought out set of legislation for e-bikes, which is something that is needed. However, it doesn't appear to be on their radar at present.

Agree with this. Another concern for me is  electric cars - having had one for the past 3 years I don't think its socialised enough as how dangerous they can be in the wrong hands. You get instant power and generally very quick 0-60, very easy to speed - given they will become more widely available and cheaper so access for young drivers in particular will become greater. Mine is 535bhp and quite scary when you want to put your foot down, I think this could be a real concern in the next 5 years - 10 years.

And without the noise of engine revs, less vibration in general, fast speeds feel slower.

I wonder if in the future there might be some GPS device that only allows you to go as fast as the limit where you are. Or is that all a bit Big Brother?

Doubtful, I just remember how I drove like an idiot 18-25 but thankfully had a 1.2 fiesta or something

Intelligent Speed Assist is already mandatory since last July for new cars. It'll be an interesting argument for implementing speed restrictions with it.

Electric cars do have a speedometer in them.

Denmark should release a statement saying any further threats against them and they will have every US military person removed from Greenland and Denmark and sent back along with anyone from the US Consulate/Embassy in Denmark and Nuuk.

Restricting US air carriers from flying over Danish or Greenland airspace might also be an option.

Is there more of a point to this besides a snappy meme which, ironically enough, itself shows a pretence of lack of understanding?

There is. The point is self evident.

Clearly.

As self evident as the lack of understanding (pretended orotherwise) from some parties regarding the damage their actions are doing and will do to everyone's future, including their own.

What does it do now, just inform you when you are speeding, so no excuse?

You don't constantly stare at the speedo.

It just has the function to know the speed limit you're in. Has features to beep and be generally annoying. It has been discussed putting actual speed limitors on.

Russia sends navy to guard oil tanker being pursued by US forces - BBC News

Classic brinkmanship. Fun to to play, but real lives on the line guys.

It’s a ghost ship

russia has decided to raise the stakes by shadowing it.  If the Americans have boarded it then I expect the Russians to quietly disappear from the area.

It's not. You're pretending black and white exists where it doesn't. There is nuance. Both people have a point.

Everyone has a point, but some people are strawmanning constantly and missing the point rather than reading anything properly. It's all over this thread.

The account I’ve just read said that the Russian navy weren’t actually shadowing it, they were just coming to meet it in the Baltic.
