Unless I’ve missed it on another thread, there’s a wildfire approaching (9miles) from a European city of 300,000 people. Which seems like quite a big deal?

Some tw4t wearing a ski mask, set fire to some long dry grass behind houses near us yesterday. A fella came out from his home to put it out whilst another took a photo of the culprit - who was just standing there 'admiring' his work.

I've been told that despite most of his face being covered, a local beat copper recognised the culprit.

They should really throw the book at these idiots.

I’m sure there are scum in many areas doing this but there has been a spate of similar fires in Sheffield that is causing issues locally, and people are of the view it’s deliberate. Just wondered if you might be based up here (I know quite a few members on here are) and if it might be the same person as that’d be good news!

That being said, arson is not the reason these wildfires in Europe and the Americas are much more massive, much more prevalent and much more devastating this year.

Which gives us something of an insight into how at least some humans would behave if the situation got rather direr, or really dire.

I'm in Leicester. This incident was alongside the Scudamore Road industrial estate.

Walking on the now closed Western Golf course which is also in the area, I noticed two areas where there had also been grass fires.

One of these had also damaged some hedgerow and trees. 

On the other side of this hedgerow - houses.

No idea of course if the same person was responsible for these ones but guess its quite possible.

It's short-sighted. Technology fine, absolutely. But AI means very few people having well paid jobs at the expense of tens of thousands not having a job at all.

 

The ongoing pursuit of AI is bewildering.

The part about teaching kids a trade is good. The price of that is going to fly through the roof as the tradies retire. Demand will always be there, but the supply of folks who can do the job is dwindling.

Sorry, I wasn’t referring to the AI part, more broadly the idea of skilling young people up in a variety of technical areas that could increase opportunities.

 

I agree re AI specifically. I meant more having vocational opportunities rather than everyone being forced down the University route as they were in my age group.

One thing they'd have done differently is got Britain to join the Iran war and have sent British men and woman in the RAF off to their deaths for a pointless war that as we've seen time and time again with these wars in the middle east, dont even change the philosophy of these countries (and if anything only make them more hard-line) and only hurts resource flow into Europe and creates a massive amount of refugees trying to get into Europe, 

 

Reform and Farage to me are an extremely American-ised party not a British or European one, they just bootlick Trump and the US and would just follow America into any old nonsense.

The sad thing is woodworking, metalwork and cooking were in all schools in the past, sure the curriculum needed updating but they closed them down in pursuit of of University placings.

 

Also even companies employing apprentices it's the first thing to go along with training in general when budgets need to be tightened often before a takeover.

The US delegation walked out of a UN Security Council meeting on Monday, in protest at comments made by France that compared Washington's voting on human rights to that of authoritarian states.

The diplomatic row was initially sparked last week, when the US joined North Korea and Russia in voting against extending Volker Turk's term as UN High Commissioner for Human Rights.

After the vote on Friday, France's UN mission criticised the US and compared it to North Korea and Russia. "The US used to be a beacon of human rights. Not anymore," it posted on X, external.

In response, US ambassador Mike Waltz accused France of voting for a human rights chief who had been "lecturing" democratic countries while "cozying up to the world's worst oppressors", without elaborating on what he meant.
