On nothing but a hunch, but I think this goes one of two ways.

He jacks it after the transfer window and walks..Or,.he has a 'road to Damascus' moment, and starts to manage pragmatically (which I think he's well capable of)

You'll be able to add John Souttar to that list when we sign him this week.

Fully expect this to be the centre half we end up with - would be another crap signing.

Only way he saves his career is the latter. I don’t think he has to do too much to be honest.

Hilariously when it came to the biggest game of his career, the play-off final he did actually play more pragmatically. So funnily enough, when he 'really' needs to win, he abandons his obviously stupid football. So deep down even he knows this is nonsense. Even despite that he won't change - he's more bothered about advertising himself as some progressive than winning games.

Okoli has stunk the place out since he’s been here. There is no evidence that a different style of play will make him a better player. He’s had 3 consecutive relegations across 2 teams with numerous managers and numerous systems of play.

Im not saying it will make him a better player. But having him making 50 passes in and around is own box. Is not great.

But if we changed the style of play he would not look no where near as bad. In effect  he would be better, less brain farts and concentration on defending rather trying to use him like a play maker

He's just not a good manager

I genuinely don't understand what any clubs see in him

The position of his clubs at the end of the season/time of him leaving have been

18th in League 1

13th in League 1

15th in the Championship

10th in the Championship

4th in the Championship

20th in the Premier League

8th in the Scottish Prem

So once he has had a successful season and even then they were the lowest of the 3 relegated teams and 9 points off automatic promotion

Over his career he actually has a negative goal difference despite his entire philosophy being to control possession

Only one owner in English football stupid enough to hire this charlatan.  I guess we are doing football a favour in that after failing in league one his career will be over & no one else will have to watch his shitty football or listen to his arrogant bullshit.

Imagine asking Wasilewski to play it out from the back. If he was in a Martin side, everyone would be saying what a carthorse he is. Play to your players strengths.

And I'm not comparing Okoli to Wasilewski but the point still stands. Just because a player cannot play a certain way, it doesn't automatically make them a bad player.

How can any manager/coach, think that playing parallel to the goal by playing across the pitch, getting within 25 yds of the opponents goal then going back to the halfway line or further, is the way to try and win matches? Yesterday, particularly in the 1st half, the Burton keeper could have sat in the stand. We play the ball backwards so often it is mind numbingly boring. I cannot understand how coaches think this is the best way to play. We actually haven’t got the players to do it anyway. And it is Soooooo boring and frustrating. Also, are the players ever aware just how long is left in a match. The amount of times when there’s about 1 minute left and we’re dilly dallying around our own penalty are as if we’ve got loads of time.

Im split on him.

Hate the style of football and apparent refusal to deviate from it.

Like that he's moved on or dropped most of the bad apples and from what i hear, improved the attitude at the club/training.

I don't like that we are in league one but ive been doing this a long time and seen players that will run thru walls and who bleed blue.  For me its more important as a city fan to see effort, players that care (even if they are sh*t) and who want to be here , than it is to be in the Premier league.  Lots wont agree and if we could have both, then great but as it stands, after hating managers and most of the team for two years, i just want a team i can get behind

Quite often with us when he was feeling the heat we'd switch to a less mental way of playing. Results would obviously improve for a bit, but as soon as he felt comfortable again out would come the "process". Not sure if it was the same at Southampton, but it looks like he stuck to one way of playing at Rangers.

So it's probably about 50/50. You really do need to get rid as soon as you can. You can stop playing Cullen then too.

It was. People point to him getting us promoted as the high point of his career but a) we came fourth with a squad that should have been in the automatics, because we leaked hundreds of goals, and b) the disaster that was Bazunu (who Russ loved) got injured and the keeper who replaced him in the play-offs was so utterly useless with his feet* that the players had no choice but to stop pissing around at the back, go against the manager’s instructions and go direct.

(Which makes Martin’s decision to now sign him and put him straight in as first choice even more unfathomable. McCarthy is simply not capable of playing out and never will be.)

First thing he did with us was sign Andy Fisher from MK to play in goal and then proceeded to absolutely destroy his confidence with the idiotic backwards passing. Constantly putting him under pressure for no reason. He's recovered a bit of his reputation since with some decent performances as backup to our current #1, but there are still those who moan whenever he plays.

There should be some sort of online support group for fans of teams that Russell Martin has managed.

The problems with this squad is almost all in their heads

either they aren’t able to play well for whatever reason  or they can’t be arsed

Surely the last type of coach they needed is Russell Martin

they needed.an experienced older coach who would put an arm around some and tell the others a few home truths.
the pretty football could wait until we’d got back into the championship

more horrendous decisions from the board

We seemed to have even abandoned Thomas’ long throw.  There were several throw ins were so high up the pitch, yet the pass back to Thomas and he sends it automatically back to the defence and we lost it a couple of times.

Insane that the concept of just get the ball in the box isn’t even on the cards. Yet it worked for the goal when the attack didn’t involve the usual clowns in Martins style.

How we can go from controlling the ball close to their goal to two coward passes backwards, the cbs then draw a press, square it to Thomas who passes back instantly even though they are being pressed, they pass it to Skipp who sends it back to the cb who is still being pressed rinse and repeat until they give it away.

Was such a risky appointment because he had to get off to a good start and he hasn’t.

He won’t ever win the fans back over

We was hoping for it to be like Enzo where teams feared pressing us because of the club's recent success, but even league one teams are pressing us now.  So the style will fall apart as the players arent suitable for it.  This is no dig at the players though, I am sure they will thrive under a more pragmatic approach.

I expect the squad is as frustrated as the fan base with everything happening on the obsession with keep ball, lunatic top etc.

Hi, I'm Col, 42, and I follow a team that was managed by the world's vainest ego.

There's a problem when managers start talking about a 'philosophy'.

It means that everything at the club has to be following that, inclusive of the playing staff.

This might be possible to embed at an established football club with time and dedication but that's not what we need. We can't make Souttar and Okoli play suicide football at the back in slavish dedication to the 'philosophy'.

It's an effete way of saying that you only have one idea. And that simply isn't the case with football. Imagine some of the best to do it going to Stoke armed with a philosophy and only that. Managers with this dogmatic approach are doomed to fail unless they've an embarrassment of riches and time and the vast majority in the top leagues have worked this out by now.

Look at the Premier League results this weekend. Not very many philosophies on display, there.

I'm minded of Ange Postecoglu talking about he doesn't like pragmatism as if getting the job done efficiently is a bad thing in comparison to repeatedly failing in some philosophical groove.
