I think Chaplin will play more wide than through the middle?

Played mostly in the 10 for Pompey last season, only a few times out on the right.

After what happened at the weekend, it’s left me more confused of where he fits into this team.

As one of the 8/10? But then Alves will probably be pushed out the 11.

As a false 9 striker? Personally I think he’s better behind a main striker.

RW? Martin went with more direct players on the wings at the weekend, and in all honesty, I’d prefer it to stay that way.

Possibly Alves on the left.

Ok with Chaplin in we can shift Bobby on. More happy out Chaplin than Ings. Both players from the black book and hugely boring .

Unless we terminate his contract I can't see Bobby leaving, no one will sign him IMO.

will be decent in L1 and hopefully not on silly wages, but for crying out loud can the scouting team unearth some unheard of Scandi player. It is like they have zero ball knowledge

You think the player who played for Portsmouth last season is the same one who got 21 g+a for Ipswich in the Championship and 31 g+a in league one?

Age is less important than performances and Chaplin's have fallen off quite significantly in recent years.

You can have a bad season, it happens

People seem to be really struggling to wrap their head around league 1 being  a worse standard than the championship.

We said we would do well in the championship last season with players who were below standard in the Premier League. As we all know it did not work out.

I think you're being disingenuous if you are genuinely trying to say that Chaplin's decline in form will not carry over to league one. Football is a highly competitive sport and if a player has lost their edge then that's going to affect their performances at any professional level.

With Fatawu likely to leave we are pretty thin on the round in wide and central attacking areas.

We have BCDR, Mavididi, Alves, Evans and Page and then others who have no league minutes to cover CF, RW, LW and CAM.

This would be my concern he’s one of those you’re not really sure what he is. A second striker really like Okazaki, but not sure where that fits in a RM system.

Previously thought Alves was better suited to the wing, but after the weekend wouldn’t mind seeing him given a go more centrally. So hope this doesn’t block his path

Players trajectories are the concern with transfers like this and Ings - they’re only going to get worse.

Plus, I would personally have liked to see a preference for pace and power in this window, but doesn’t look like that’s being prioritised so far.

But then you have the conundrum of what he produced at the weekend, he was our best player in a 8/10 role.

It all depends how certain players are viewed, it’s why I was most intrigued to see where Martin would play Alves and BDCR at the weekend, they both ended up playing the same role, a role where I personally think Chaplin would fit better.

If BDCR left, I could understand this signing a bit more. You could put Alves LW, but how he looked at the weekend, maybe the 8/10 role is better for him. Mavididi could leave, but do you replace him with a similar player? While Jake Evans is probably best at RW rather than a lone striker role at this level.

Also you have to factor in that Martin went with more directness on the wings at the weekend, even giving Riley Carr a chance.

Conundrums galore lol

Intrigued to see what happens with Riley, inclusion in training etc appears to have come out of the blue.

Great signing for this level.

whilst his time at pompey wasn’t great, you have to think about the system and style of play they had.

Chaplin will be needed to unlock defenses against teams we should dominate the ball.

with regards to where he fits, perhaps RM has finally understood he needs to swap it sometimes?

Yeah that’s what worries me. Alves and page going to lose minutes in my opinion.

I think we will see further changes in the squad before the close of the window both in and out.

I just think we are very light in all attacking areas,

If they play well enough they will play simple.

You would think so, haven’t seen that too much over recent years. Aluko not getting over the performance of our fullbacks  and mavs starting every game is an example of that.

There a tonne of games next season and Alves injury record isn’t great.

But what we have got to see is the manager not favouring experience for the sake of it. If Alves is performing then Chaplin should be the rotation option.

Think it’s been said but reckon this is an attacking midfield signing, and he’ll compete with Alves/Page/Reid for the 10 role. Think we start the season with Braybrooke and Choudhury behind Chaplin

Aluko being sent off in his first start didn't help.

Mistakes were made, I felt Marti was willing to use youth, Rowett not so much.

They need to grab their chance.

No doubt mate, it’s just the fact that the weekend left me more confused lol

Preferring more directness on the wings, rather than playing Alves and BDCR out there, was such a key decision imo, a decision I hope Russell Martin sticks with. But now with Chaplin coming in, who’s best work in his career has come when playing behind a main striker, it will be interesting to see where Martin plays him, because comparing him with BDCR, it’s ridiculous how many similarities there were in their statistics last season.

I'm an Ipswich supporter.

Chappers is a leader and acted as captain when Morsy was unavailable. The area inside the box from the penalty spot to the D is his patch.

Scorer of many late and four times deflected goals. (According to contemporary Foxes talk).

We have fond memories of his volleys direct from corners. In the net before the keeper knew he had hit it.

A legend at Town. Look after him.
