He barged in to Stol and unfortunately Stols leg was planted and he twisted it. 

 

It was unnecessary to barge into him, but certainly not awful, just a bit of a freak one

The triangles between Alves, Braybrooke and MacFarlane were really promising to see. Braybrooke and Page seem to pass the ball off well between each other, really gets us up the pitch quickly.

My issue is when I have to think twice about posting something balanced, with positive aspects and negative aspects as I know there are people who will refer to me as a negative boo boy or whatever because I haven’t just essentially said everything is perfect which is all some want to see on here.

How nice is it to support a bunch of players you don’t hate?

I was able to watch this game due to there being very little other football on and having a spare few hours.

 

I said last week that the method of beating a Martin side is just having a pacy and clinical striker. What I saw last night just reaffirmed that. Plymouth could/should have been 1 or 2 up before you got going, but they were absolutely dire from an attacking sense. His desire to play it out will see at least a couple of chances given up every game, whether the opposition are good enough to punish will be the question.

 

I thought you then came into it, with some nice pacy attacking play and dominated 30 minutes to 60 minutes. The two goals were pretty bad from a Plymouth perspective but I think you were good value for 2 goals.

 

However, naturally, you then allowed Plymouth to play and sat back a bit on the lead. This gave them a bit of confidence and suddenly towards the end they could have made it very interesting or even got a draw if it wasn’t for three very good saves.

 

The Plymouth number 9, Evans, was absolutely terrible. Either offside, fouling an opponent or bundling around like the ball was a hot potato. 

 

I thought Alves, Howell and Page were the best three players on the pitch. It’s no surprise Plymouth came back into it when 2 of the 3 exited the pitch.

 

Overall, encouragement coupled with some already known deficiencies. Based on my limited knowledge, I’d say you’ll have a season of performances like the last 3. Some reasonably comfortable wins combined with a number of poor performances and results, ending up in the playoffs (where you’d be favourites but anything can happen).

 

I think Huddersfield and Sheff Weds go up automatically and will take some catching similar to Lincoln and Cardiff last year.

It is. You can forgive mistakes when you can see the effort and just more energy, rather than players with a face on them going through the motions.

 

Last night was very far from perfect, as was Saturday. But as long as you can see that effort, and it being a work in progress from a young side, there’s so much to get behind.

 

 That’s why it is disappointing that they were booed on Saturday as it was more tactical issues than anything else.

I’m not sure about Huddersfield but speaking with a Sheff Weds fan at work today, the opinion there seems to be that they have a strong starting line up but little in the way of squad depth.

 

Whilst we have a lot to improve upon, we do have the most depth available to us and should be able to benefit from this over the congested periods.

I was very impressed with some of the patterns of play which is clearly down to Russell.

 

The way we opened them up around the edge of the Box at times was impressive.

 

Which I'm sure will get better as the season goes on.

It wasn't perfect but it's the first time in a long time i've come away feeling happy and looking forward to the next game.

 

The kids might just be alright, some of the football last night was excellent. When we pick out the right final pass and finish the chances we are going to absolutely batter someone. 

 

Actually looking forward to Oxford on Saturday.

I positively like quite a few. 

 

Losing the ball and then running like you really mean it to try and win it back like I've ****ed up but want to make amends ......... incredible - not seen it in years

Be careful Livid, this club has form for raising hopes then dropping us next game through the floor. Let’s see first, Oxford are very physical and better than what we’ve faced so far.

Nobody wants this at all. 

There are some of us that gave been calling for positivity and calling out the booing of a young team after positive performances. 

That doesn't mean we think everything is perfect.

I kept saying that last night. I did a double take at the bench when the team news came out, because there wasn't a single player on it that I didn't want to see involved. It was surreal seeing subs lining up last night and my heart not sinking at the prospect of them coming on and actively making us worse. Knowing we've got more personnel coming in to that squad too, and knowing it's probably going to limit the gametime of the few players we don't want to see much of (Bobby, Thomas, Okoli), it's a weird feeling. Even if a few of them turn out to be underwhelming (jury's still very much out on Cullen, Watson and McCarthy for me), it's early enough days yet that they've got time to impress me. Which in McCarthy's case, he did yesterday after a very dodgy start.

What I'm saying is: we have a whole season ahead and I'm very, very excited to see which new faces I end up hating!

It’s not yourself I would be referring here. Your views on footballing and other matters on this forum are very much aligned with my own more than most. 

 

I believe myself to be a balanced poster on most subjects. I have been one who defends players longer than most and don’t agree with the booing of a young team as I have said. The majority of what I post will show this.

 

But I am saying it how I see it, and I am even feeling that I have to be careful that anything that is not an entirely positive review of a particular match/transfer etc, to be careful how it is worded as there are certain people it will trigger, even when there is a balance of positive and negative aspects to the post.

Good win and good to see a committed performance. Some neat moves, some careless play but I felt, especially in the first half, that getting forward quickly was the aim. Great time to score twice.

 

The ending was a bit wild but fortunately the job was done. Still carrying too many but most of the youngsters really stepped up.

Feel like second half was game management mode.

 

Subs felt the subs where about getting more minutes into Cullen and Burns legs and managing Howell and Bristric minutes with all 4 missing the majority of pre-season.

I think there were signs last night that when it clicks we really will be hard to stop in an attacking sense (just might take some time and a few mistakes a long the way).

You'll get it either way. I feel I am fairly balanced but if I'm positive then I've had people say I'm a KP lover but if I'm negative then I've had people say I'm a boo boy.

 

At the end of the day, Tuesday was our first home since March (!), performance was good, we played good attacking football in the main, the manager is playing young players and the players are more likable now. Everything is positive to me. Hoping for a similar performance and result against Oxford now.

A cynic would say that Plymouth should have scored at least 2 of their chances in fairness.

We were the only team play for large parts....HOWEVER you simply cannot deny they could have scored two at the end if not for McCarthy's acrobatics which I find troubling to say the least.

 

Russell himself wasn't happy at all with how we faded at the end of that match.
