Leicester City will play a behind-closed-doors friendly midway through the international break, Russell Martin has confirmed.

The Foxes are not back in League One action until October 10 due to this season's prolonged international break. FIFA opted to combine the September and October internationals into a single extended break, which will see national teams play three to four times.

 

Martin's men were in action on Tuesday night in the Jersey Mike's Trophy, beating Fulham Under-21s 6-1 at the King Power Stadium, and will play their second group game at Stevenage on October 6 before welcoming Peterborough United to LE2.

City have eight senior players away on international duty, meaning 18 of Martin's squad remain at Seagrave. The non-international players will have some time off this week before returning to work in training.

 

As part of their extended break, just six weeks into the 2026/27 season, Leicester will play a behind-closed-doors friendly before travelling to Stevenage. "I think we might have a day off or two after tomorrow [Wednesday] to just decompress," Martin said post-Fulham U21s. "And also to sit down and analyse what we've done, what we like and what we need to do better as a group.

 

"It'll be worth it and next week will be full-on. We're going to play a friendly game next week before the Stevenage game in-house, so that'll be really important against a strong opposition and it'll be a huge part of our preparation for what's coming."

 

He added: "It's time to work. I'd love to be saying to you now that we've had an amazing..., we've got a week off, but it's not. We're not there, we're nowhere near there. We need to really, really work and we've been at clubs where we've had a chance to work early on, using the international breaks really well and being stronger after that, we'll have to make sure that's the case."

you say that but we did organise pre season friendlies v Burton and Northampton and then played them both in the first 3 games of the season

October 6th is 12 days away. Could easily squeeze a game in that time.

I know Martin can do no right, but weird that there’s not a single positive comment here. We had Rowett going off on holidays, cifuentes quite clearly doing f-all prep and the rest of them…. Is it not at least refreshing we have a manager who actually wants to use the break to improve us?

Could be but could just mean no spectators.

This is a long international break with no matches. Plenty of clubs might like the idea of a game to keep their players match fit. Some clubs won't have that many call ups .

I would suggest he uses the time to concentrate on every individual players fitness levels - they measure this stuff so it shoul d be easy to see who has upped their levels and who the lazy basrards still are.....

It would be great to go continental and get an ultra group together to break down the gates to the training ground, do a little bit of artificial damage, surround the pitch and demand a victory.

You say improve but that won't happen in a one off behind closed doors friendly against a likely piss weak opponent
