Let's have a films thread.

It is, just feels like a total waste of what TFA and the originals actually gave Johnson to work with.  He wasted the two best characters in the whole film as well.

I believe you. I haven't seen the newest yet and I will even if everyone slates it. I agree wholeheartedly that the first was very underwhelming whilst TLR was quite good, I expect this second film to be weak and follow the Disney line where merchandising and selling the name is king.

I understand the need to re-balance "women" through the use of TV and film but I have to say political correctness all too often makes poor viewing.

Snoke & Phasma were underused in both TFA and TLJ, both were interesting characters and had so much potential. Shame that Laurence Kasdan has now retired, could have maybe used someone like him to oversee the Lucasfilm story group (or even get Lucas back in as an advisor).

Only 6 months til the next SW film though, Kasdan co-wrote the Han Solo film, but with it having to get almost completely re-shot by Ron Howard what could possibly go wrong.

I'm all for it, but they've gone so far the other way it just feels completely jarring. In this film every single man is portrayed as a hot headed bloke who doesn't think and just wants to blow stuff up and all the women save the day and think things through and are level headed.

That film sounded horrific from the start, not rushing to the cinema to watch that one.

To me, all those things felt natural in the original. Almost like they weren't intentionally trying to be funny with jokes, just light hearted moments, whether it's tools falling on Chewies head, or a bit of name calling. They were few and far between as well.

So many needless attempts to make something "funny" where it wasn't needed. There's a space battle, BB8 needs to fix something... can't we just have him fix it or struggling to fix it. Without putting in a lame, ridiculously over used "plugging a leak with your finger" routine. One after another, there was just another lame forced attempt at humour that didn't need to be there.

Speaking of BB8.... AT-ST... what the flying **** was that scene all about.

I just keep remembering piles of shitness... Maz Kanata, playing what seems like Call of Duty and making nob gabs with a light sabre / gun.

Bb8 and the AT ST was great, and a nice little nod to chewy and the ewoks in the at st on Endor. Not having that one.

Maz and the casino stuff and Benicio del Toro should have been binned off. The whole plot could have been done by having another member of the resistance as the code breaker and they just get on with it, No Maz, no casino, no horse things.

Been reading the fan reviews in a lot of different places... wow, some savage stuff. It doesn't seem to have gone down well at all so far.

I think the biggest problem was critics sucking it off and calling better than Empire and things like that. That's a sure fire way to warp people's expectations and set them on a hiding to nothing.

I enjoyed it but it is the equal of TFA and should be compared with that, you can't compare it to the originals, they are classics.

So wait until it's on putlocker?  Gotcha.

This wont be leaked for about 6 months mate or right up until its ready for public release, unless you want a shite 'HD CAM' . Disney security is top notch.

Glad you liked it, for me it was just a cheap stunt, didn't feel real and had no weight.

These are fantasy films and you need an open mind, but all good films still have their own boundaries. I feel like this film left that behind, there were no physical boundaries in that cheap cgi stunt. Same goes for the force, you accepted it was a powerful thing, but it didn't feel like the power was limitless.... now though. Almost anything and everything at any point can now be explained away.

This was like the chewie scene with the dial turned up to 11, for not reason other than the need to go bigger and better and frankly more stupid in my opinion.

I agree about Snokes, his power was phenomenal but under used, could have been much more, but the story was always going to be about Kylo Ren and Rey I think that Snokes was too much like the emperor and the trilogy was in danger of just becoming a homage to the original.

The opening bit I found funny, if a little forced, it was a ham fisted way to portray Poe as a reckless cocky fighter, but it had a purpose, to antagonise and distract them while they readied the escape and set up the bombing run.

There is plenty of comedy in the originals, especially with the droids, but lots of slapstick moments too. I enjoyed it, I don't think it deserves the rave reviews it's been getting, there were some serious flaws, but it certainly don't think it ruined Star Wars. Cocky quips, cute animals, slapstick, cod religious nonsense about the force, puppets are all a part of Star Wars as much as epic space battles and light sabre duels.

If the prequels didn't kill Star Wars for you then I can't believe this did.

Pretty much this. I'd seen hints of reviews which raised my expectations (I try to avoid this like the plague; sure fire way of being disappointed!) and I've no idea how these rave reviews came about. It's just average and it's biggest sin is being too formulaic. No risks, no surprises, no WOWs! Too much humour that wasn't actually funny. Also, Huxley reminds me of Rimmer in Red Dwarf and weirdly seems to have become a complete 'comedy' character.

Quite liked the start though, Holdo's ramming Snoke's ship at light speed and Benicio Del Toro's character, even though it seemed a wasted 15 mins. They should've used him more or not at all.

Also, Snoke said, "spunk", I'm pretty sure. Did not one of the many British actors think to raise a hand and say, "excuse me, you do know that means something else in Britain and people are just going to. E sniggering at what should be a really scary character?"

This is the only part of the internet I've seen bad things said about the new Star Wars so I'm still excited to see it

You've probably been reading things by people who either haven't seen it or by people (youtube reviewers) who are influenced by their free tickets to Disney premiers! The comments sections are full of scathing reviews and so is the Rotton Tomatoes fan comments section.

Its audience score on Rotton Tomatoes is 62%... compared to TFA  89%, Rogue One 87% and Revenge of the Sith 65%. Rated worse than Sith by fans... and that score is actually falling like a stone today. Be amazed if that's not in the 50's come the end of the weekend.

Rogue one, for me has been the only one that has come close to feeling like an old Star Wars film.

Rogue One is better than TFA.  By the sounds of it, it's better than TLJ as well.  Despite its production problems, it held up pretty well.  The Han Solo film could be decent yet, I wouldn't write that one off.

I will see TLJ after Christmas.  But I've heard negative things from two people I know who've seen it now and countless bad vibes on here!  Doesn't bode well...:(

Audience score already dropped to 58%, not far off the worst fan rated film yet.

So bloody frustrating as there is a basis for something excellent there.

Justice league?

I meant of the Star Wars set.

It's dividing opinion wildly. I think if you loved TFA you might like this, if Rogue One was more your thing, then you might not like this.

Seems a a common theme amongst opinions I've been reading.

I quite liked them both. Not wildly, but better than the prequels. Then again, I think The Phantom Menace was a good film. It was Hayden Christensen that did my nut. Made Mark Hamill look like Marlon Brandon.

You'll probably think it's average then! Ha.

It seems to me that whoever is behind making these Star Wars films, they can't find a decent balance.  You've got the fanatics, who want it to be an intricate masterpiece & have everything explained in its finest detail.  Then you've got the other half, who couldn't give a shit about that kind of stuff.  They're trying to please both & pleasing neither.

I was about about 7 when I saw Star Wars.  I loved it, as I did Empire & Return of the Jedi........because I was a kid.  They should have left it there.

It has become a cash cow & nothing else, as far as I can tell.  As stand alone films, they are terrible.  I'm sure there are those that could explain exactly how different they all are, but to me it's the same limited storyline ad nauseam.  Rocky got boring by the time he got to fight Ivan Drago & Star Wars VIII isn't so different - no matter how much money they chuck at it.
