Phube Posted 4 June 2007 Posted 4 June 2007 It's just been on East Midlands Today, a woman complaining her son's food was "inedible". As we all know the NHS has a funding crisis, and paying for patients meals costs a lot of money, only for them to complain when they get 3 meals a day, plus tea/coffe/juice etc.! Perhaps the answer is to get the patient to pay for their own food. They wood be feeding themselves if they were at home so why shouldn't they shoulder the burden and let the NHS pay for there heathcare! I thought it seemed ridiculous at first, but now I think about it it makes perfect sense (well to me anyway). What's the consensus on here?

Surely the only way to ensure a fast recovery from surgery is to ensure an adequate, monitored nutritional intake...which is why it is currently done - not attempting to emulate a hotel. The answer is not to scrap what is currently there - and is appreciated by the vast majority of patients just because one bellend and his cnut of a mother kick up.
Webbo Posted 4 June 2007 Posted 4 June 2007 I know my wife hasn't too keen on the food when she was in there having the kids (not literally at the same time obviously) but i think it has more to do with the fact that it's kept warm in a trolley while the dinner ladies are doing their rounds, by the time it gets there it's all dried up. I don't know what can be done about this or how paying for it for yourself will change this.
James. Posted 4 June 2007 Posted 4 June 2007 thier, Phube? And wood! Are you drunk?! Not to mention "pay for there healthcare". Unbelievable. The hypocrisy!!
Head Honcho Posted 4 June 2007 Posted 4 June 2007 Some people are never happy. I've just returned from a 2 week holiday and the hotel was excellent you honestly couldn't fault it, but reading some of the reviews you'd think the reviewers had just come back from a fortnight in Iraq!

You are being disingenuous Allen - tell the people the truth, you went on holiday to Iraq.
AoWW Posted 4 June 2007 Posted 4 June 2007 Not to mention "pay for there healthcare".Unbelievable. The hypocrisy!! ...or heathcare, to be strictly accurate. And coffe, Phube? Being drunk is the only excuse you can give, me thinks?!

(however that 'that looks disgusting' sound is spelt (on a fast becoming spelling fascist thread)) dad, that looks like dogs' food ^ from the mouths of babes. when i saw the state of what had been served up i was (temporarily) put off my own dinner!
Daggers Posted 4 June 2007 Posted 4 June 2007 To be honest, I think it is disgusting that people go into hospital and expect US to pay for their bedding and all the damn cleaning. It's high time that everyone arrived at wards with their own cleaning products and sterilised surgical instruments...and as for scans? Turn off the bloody expensive machines and just make an echo in the sodding corridor. Being sick is a state of mind anyway - shut down the damn hospitals and get everyone to practice a bit of positive fudging thinking.

Nationwider Posted 4 June 2007 Posted 4 June 2007 I think that people who go onto East Midlands Today with opinions should be minced and their lardy carcasses used for NHS cottage pie. I've had more NHS meals than I've had hot dinners over the past few years and they've always been fine. The sarnies are a ****in' disgrace though.
The People's Hero Posted 4 June 2007 Posted 4 June 2007 Why don't doctors get ill all the time? It's a stressful job so they should be susceptible to infection etc and they have to deal with very ill, often very infectious cases.... etc etc (poor syntax/grammar - can't be arsed). So basically, do they get special immunity pills which make them immune from everything or are they just trained in the art of appearing not to be ill? Eager for answers of Maidstone (23).

Do you want a serious answer for that?
l444ry Posted 5 June 2007 Posted 5 June 2007 If they must charge for meals in hospitals I hope the government are consistent and do the same in prisons.
Dr The Singh Posted 5 June 2007 Posted 5 June 2007 If they must charge for meals in hospitals I hope the government are consistent and do the same in prisons. Hospital meals have improved, but still you shouldn't expect 'home cooked' meals and the variety will not satisfy the fussy. Also, there is an issue of how the food is effected by how it's kept warm (already mentioned)!! Whenever a member of family are kept in hospital, we just take them a bucket of kfc, mcdonalds, pizza or a curry take away!!!!
Daggers Posted 5 June 2007 Posted 5 June 2007 Whenever a member of family are kept in hospital, we just take them a bucket of kfc, mcdonalds, pizza or a curry take away!!!! So is that the Singh way? You must have the largest family in the East Midlands...KFC, MuckyD's and a pizza - how do they find room for it all
Jon the Hat Posted 5 June 2007 Posted 5 June 2007 Hospital meals have improved, but still you shouldn't expect 'home cooked' meals and the variety will not satisfy the fussy. Also, there is an issue of how the food is effected by how it's kept warm (already mentioned)!! In many hospitals catering is another example of a failure to manage outsourced services, the same as cleaning. If the staff on the wards have no authority to affect the quality of the food then there is a disconnect.
Daggers Posted 5 June 2007 Posted 5 June 2007 In many hospitals catering is another example of a failure to manage outsourced services, the same as cleaning. If the staff on the wards have no authority to affect the quality of the food then there is a disconnect. Why should ward nurses have an affect on the quality of food, or otherwise? Aren't they busy doing nursey stuff?
Daggers Posted 5 June 2007 Posted 5 June 2007 Hahaha - the wife has just been signed up for a five day IOSH Managing Risk & Safety in Healthcare course run by the Trust Fire/Health & Safety Advisor...who promises that the course will be "fun". Has anyone EVER attended a risk identification and safety management course and come out thinking 'boy, not only was that useful...but that was really great fun'?
Jon the Hat Posted 5 June 2007 Posted 5 June 2007 Why should ward nurses have an affect on the quality of food, or otherwise? Aren't they busy doing nursey stuff? This is exactly the problem. Yu are either in charge of the ward or you aren't. And if you aren't then you have a problem, becuase then in fact nobody is. The senior sister / nurse manager / ward manager should be in charge of everything on the ward. Simple as that. Cleaners not doing their job - answerable to you. Food not up to sratch, catering manager answerable to you. Porters not doing their job - answerable to you. Everything revolves around and impacts on patient care, all of which should be under the responsiblity and authority of the nursing team. No accountability = crap results. True everywhere.
Phube Posted 5 June 2007 Author Posted 5 June 2007 Bugger, sorry I was tired yesterday!! These shocking lapses in grammar are unforgivable!!!
Bluefoxtim Posted 5 June 2007 Posted 5 June 2007 I have only been in overnight once in a hospital. I thought the food was quite nice Or my mum just can't cook!!!
Rincewind Posted 5 June 2007 Posted 5 June 2007 I suppose it depends on what you expect for a meal. I don't think the nurses actually cook the meals, they would have a catering company to do it. Normally a stay in hospital is kept to the minimum so as to free beds up. If you go in for an operation there is a limit to what you can eat anyway. Maybe some of these people were expecting a four course meal equivalant to a five star hotel. I would have thought the meals were adequate for the time spent in a hospital. It's not as if you want to be in there for long. I'd be more concerened about getting home than what meal I am being served. Surely it is possible to slum it in return for being nursed back to health and being given a few more years to live.
