Found out I'm being made redundant as part of a company restructuring. Feels pretty shit although at least it's come just before I've started to view flats and sort out relocating over there.

Sorry to hear that Doc, I've been made redundant a couple of times in my career and it feels shit at the time. I know it won't help, but I'm a firm believer that everything happens for a reason. I'm sure it's all part of life's rich pattern and you'll look back on it one day as the start of a new chapter. Good luck with whatever's next.

I find it's not really the pain of whatever they are doing in my mouth that's the killer, it's the prices they charge for treatment now

Had a root canal and crown done last week, £230 on the NHS! for one tooth! I only went because one of my fillings broke!

I went a couple of weeks ago and my dentist studied my info form that I had just re signed to say the info was still the same as before and he told me I drank too much.   I asked if he was having a laugh but apparently he wasn't !  He told me that dentists had to point this out now cus GP's didn't have time to do it.  After telling him that I'd never heard such a load of boll*x and could he get on with looking at my teeth ...   which is what I had gone there for in the first place,  he then told me that they were also being asked to discuss oral sex as this could affect your gums !!!!        The worlds gone mad.      Before you know it the girl on the checkout at Asda will be asking if you take it up the ar*e.

It's ok, CF, just deny it - she won't be able to prove anything..

Sorry to hear that mate. I'm sure you won't be out of work for long.

Bad news mate, lets hope the next move will overshadow this one as a distance meaningless memory

Just back from an assessment centre for IBM. Think it went really well - find out this evening if I've made it to the final stage (a technical interview over the phone on Thursday). Fingers crossed.

Off out for a pub lunch now to relax a bit, then a couple of lectures and back in time for the footy. :D

They are bastards to work for, all about share price share price in that place. Dont expect a salary increase even if you re-invent the wheel.

I was there for 2 years and in that time saw my dept get stripped down from 30 to about 5 people. Morale was non existent in the end.

It's a subsidiary company - IBM client innovation centre - and it only opened last summer, and it looks like a very different work environment to anything I've come across or heard of before. Looking forward to it.

First job out of uni though, and there's a big focus on additional training, so worst case scenario I'll stick it out for the grad scheme contract and move upwards elsewhere. Can't see that being the case though.

What you described sounds a lot like my placement at Virgin Media, actually. Not a focus on share price but still office politics galore, numerous restructures and spent half the time as either the most senior member of my team (as an intern!) or managerless...

heaven. I can't tell you how great it is to not have a manager, or to have a completely incompetent one that just lets you get on with your work and figure it out yourself. That's what i fear most about a career change, losing that autonomy I have now.

I passed :D

Final technical interview to come, but feeling confident :D

In the meantime, I get to 'celebrate' with a few drinks and hopefully a Leicester win - all round a pretty good day.

Cheers. I don't think I'd be so down if they'd at least been honest with me - told me I'm overqualified for the structure they want to bring in (Lab Techs), which obviously means "don't want to pay you the amount you're being paid when it doesn't fit with the rest of the structure", and that's fine, but trying to suggest it's what's best for me because I'd be bored being a lab tech (doing what I am already) and could do better, I don't appreciate that - I don't like people presuming that they know what's better for me and what I want better than I do.

I have my own redundancy predicament, but a nicer one. (sorry Doc)

So GE are making a few people redundant and my area is one of the ones affected (planning department). I don't yet know if I am going to be made redundant but I am telling myself I am.

I work in Rugby so have a 50 mile roundtrip each day. I have found a job that is right on my doorstep. (I live in Glenfield and new job is Scudamore road, 2 miles away) Now I haven't been offered the new job yet but I am very confident they will be interested in me. (They have been looking for a planner since November).

Now the predicament i'm in is that I cant put myself forward for voluntary redundancy until at least April. Therefore if I get offered this job I either decline it and stay where I am, take voluntary redundancy then hope its still available or I take the hit and take the job, missing out on my redundancy package (Which works out about 8k)

The job is more money (approx. 6k a year more) and is much closer to home.

People are telling me i'm stupid for leaving the company now and missing out on redundancy but its not often I can find a job that's more money and on my doorstep. I would be gutted to miss out on working so close to home.

You'll make up the eight grand in eighteen months.

With all the other benefits it seems like a no-brainer to me.

That's exactly my way of thinking. I suppose its different in the sense I will have the £8000 in a lump sum rather than over an 18 month period. Its just people saying im mad had put a seed of doubt in my mind. If I get offered the job I will most certainly take it

A few things:

1. 6k isn't that far off what you'd be getting from your redundancy after only one year.

2. If another job doesn't materialise soon after your redundancy, you'll spend the lot on living costs

3. Travelling an additional 50 miles every day until you're made redundant is more money wasted, not to mention time. What is it 45-60 minutes per trip? Technically, you'll also be working less for more money.

If offered the job, I'd take it. Yes, you can hold out for your 8k but you'll then be out of a job - unless you're confident that you'll find work almost immediately. The job seems like too good an opportunity to turn down to me.

Those advising you to hang on are just greedy and not looking at the bigger picture.

1. Don't forget that 6K is taxed on so it will take me longer to recoup the 8k lump sum

2. I don't have a mortgage so I don't have as much financial responsibilities as others.

3. It take about 35 minutes each way. I do get a mileage allowance which helps towards the cost but this is obviously factored into my yearly salary. Therefore my new job would be more money and saving on fuel. win win

I would be confident in finding another job as my planning qualifications gives me many employment routes to go down.

The game changer is it being on my doorstep. Not only will I earn more money but I will save about £150 a month on fuel costs.

Its a no brainer as far as im concerned. Like I said though peoples comments were making me rethink but I know its the right thing to do. Lets see if I get offered the job.

I am confident in finding another job as a planner I can pretty much plan any project. Its about knowing the software.

The game changer is it being practically on my doorstep. Which is what I keep telling people who are questioning my thinking.

Sounds like you're letting others influence your decision.

Although, and myself included in this thread, it's easy to make decisions for other people when it's not you that's under any pressure.

If they offer you the job, could you not just ask if they would be willing to wait a little? I took voluntary redundancy last May but had to stay there until October. I was offered a new position with 6 weeks still to go of my leaving date and they were willing to wait it out.

Turns out it was a shithole anyway so am at a different place now, but if they are really interested in you I feel there's no harm in asking. They may be understanding.

Is it at Bromford Industries by any chance?
