Vulture arrested in Lebanon on suspicion of spying

A vulture from an Israeli nature reserve has been captured in Lebanon on suspicion of espionage after flying across the border, Israel’s nature reserve authority has said.

Members of the Israeli public phoned the Israel Nature and Parks Authority to alert it to Facebook reports and pictures of a vulture with an Israeli identification ring and location transmitter captured by residents of the south Lebanese town of Bint Jbeil, a spokeswoman, Tali Tenenbaum, said.

“Reports passed to us show the vulture tied with a rope by local people who write that they suspect Israeli espionage apparently because of the transmitter attached to him,” the authority said.

“In the 21st century, we expect people to understand that wild animals are not harmful,” it added. “We hope that the Lebanese will release him.”

Tenenbaum said the authority’s experts had been aware for some days that it had flown about 2.5 miles (four kilometres) into Lebanon. “But we did not know he’d been captured,” she said.

Reports later said the bird had been freed after it was deemed not to pose a threat.

Just saw something amusing on Twitter. I do not have the link atm.

A councilor tweeted earler this week that his cat had been killed in a hit and run. He buried it then a few hours later his cat walked into his kitchen. He had buried someone else's cat.

Well I thought it was funny on first read. Better if seeing related tweets.

Blogger travels from Sheffield to Essex via Berlin to save cash

A consumer blogger discovered it was cheaper to travel home to Essex from Sheffield via Berlin than to take the train.

Jordon Cox, 18, from Brentwood, Essex, was in Sheffield for a lecture and found a one-way train ticket home would cost £47.

He opted instead to fly from East Midlands Airport to Berlin and then fly from Berlin to Stansted.

Mr Cox said the journey, on 20 January, saved him about £8.

He admitted it was not an environmentally-friendly way to travel or the quickest.

It took him 12 hours to get home compared with the three-and-a-half hour train journey.

"Obviously it isn't for everyone. Some people will just want to get home, but if you like travelling and saving money then its a great way to do it.

"The scenery was also 10 times better than any train trip would have been."

Mr Cox, who blogs on the Money Saving Expert website, took a train from Sheffield to Derby and then a bus to East Midlands Airport, from where he flew to the German capital.

He said the trip gave him time to visit the centre of Berlin, which he probably would not have been to otherwise.

The two flights, bus fares and lunch cost the blogger £44.07, while the train trip plus bus fares and a sandwich would have cost £51.79.

Now this did make me laugh and fair play if he wanted to do that (although only saved about £5) but surely this is another reason why the government should look into our railway pricing. Everybody knows it's a rip off.

Saw the headline but never read the whole story. Was the extra time (if any) worth the saving? There are savings if booked earlier enough and look at all routes, buy seperate tickets. But I agree rail travel prices are too much for a lot of journeys.

Just seen a Sky News vid where he explains why  he did it  and tbf he seems a bright  young man. Not only  did he do it  to save money but also to  see  the city. He had a day to spare and is always looking to do things  as cheap as possible looking for bargains and using coupons.

To be fair £44 Sheffield to Essex isn't actually that bad a price, which just shows how ridiculous train prices have got.

He always wanted to go there, so including lunch etc. He had a 'free' holiday that saved him £7 off the price of a train ticket.

Fair play to him. But he is never getting laid.

lol

Jeremy Corbyn was up in Nottingham to launch his party’s local election campaign this weekend, problem is no one who organised it appeared to check the upcoming schedule as there are no local elections in Nottingham in May lol

I'm no fan of the job Corbyn's done so far, but all he was doing in Nottingham was addressing the Labour Local Government Conference:

Did you really think that he was launching a 3-month campaign for the local elections?  lol Just the usual "humorous" smears, I presume?

Whatever next? Ridiculous Cameron holds Tory Party conference in October, 6 months before/after any elections!  :dunno:

I missed this a year ago: http://www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/lostinshowbiz/2015/may/07/jarvis-cockers-common-people-really-about

Seems that there's a fair chance that Pulp's "Common People" was written about the woman now married to Yanis Varoufakis, ex-Syriza finance minister

She certainly "came from Greece" and doubtless "had a thirst for knowledge". She definitely "studied sculpture at St. Martin's College" - and at the same time that Jarvis Cocker was there.

Did she "want to live with common people"?

Jarvis doesn't seem to have clarified one way or the other - though he's been gentleman enough to admit that he just fancied the Greek woman who "wanted to live with common people" but didn't get anywhere.

"Australian police have seized what they believe is more than A$1 billion worth of methamphetamine, more commonly known in Australia as "ice" and elsewhere as "crystal meth." It has been discovered in huge shipments of silicon bra inserts"

A lot fewer people getting off their tits in Oz, then.  :D
