LeeCovFox Posted 21 December 2007 Posted 21 December 2007 Best Moment as City Fan : City 2-1 Palace at Wembley, aged 13, my dad shakin Martin Georges hand after the match askin him to get his wallet out. He does, to which my dad responds "theres at least a fiver in there son." Perfect father and son day, my dad cheerin City on for my sake despite being a Birmingham fan. Also City 5-2 Sunderland. Martin still in charge, the promise of money to spend that summer, knowing the new stadium was being built, Collymore hat trick. Actually having every reason to believe that we could become a genuinely big club at that time. Best Player Seen Play for City : Difficult one. I remember idolising Julian Joachim and David Speedie. Loved Claridge, Muzzy, Lennon and Sav. Steve Guppy too. What a team we had. Always Matty Elliott for me though. Worked at Morrissons for a bit a couple of years back, and was astounded to see him do his weekly shop there. Mondays were my favourite shift because of that. Best Player Seen Against City. : Again a lot to choose from. But Harry Kewell in his prime in that Leeds side which looked so good has to win it for me. Best City Match : City 5-2 Sunderland, for all of the reasons given above. How did it all go so wrong? Best City Atmosphere : Again, that Sunderland game. In the Kop, surrounded by happy people, all probably thinking the same as me. The Palce and Tranmere Wembley wins run it close though. Best City Goal : Got to go back to that Sunderland game again, Collymore's volley. Not just for the quality of the goal but for the experience. Bit Claridge against Palace was pretty good, just watched it on youtube, the ball moved a lot faster than i remember it. It seemed in slow motion at the time, and there was a short silence after it had went in. Dont know if it was disbelief, or shock, or just relief that we didnt have to go to penalties just as Zeljko Kalac had been subbed on. Best Goal Againt City : Gary McSwegan for Notts County at Meadow Lane 93/94, losing 4-1 comes to mind. Scott Gemmill for Forest at the City ground same season losing 4-0. Any of Sheffield Wednesdays 3 stunners in the 4-1 home defeat at the Walkers in worthy too. Best City Experience. Many, many. At Filbert Street against Grimsby 93/94 season. 1-0 down after a 2nd minute Clive Mendonca goal, my dad trying to leave on 90 minutes, me refusing, the steward telling us to get back into our seats or leave, us refusing, Julian Joachim equalising in injury time, saving me from a bollocking off the old man when we got home. Utterly vindicated. The two Wembley wins, the Sunderland Game. Hearing on the radio we had beated Tranmere in the Play Off Semi, Leicester City are in dreamland against Derby 1994 Play Off Final, hearing on the radio that Ian Marshall had put us ahead in Madrid, Heskey scoring the winner against Southampton in our second prem game under Martin, the legendary 1-0 away win at Maine Road in the rain 94/95. Mark Robins will always be a hero of mine for that winner. Also City 1-0 Wolves, 95/96, Mike Whitlow scoring in front of the Kop, me and a mate of the same age, about 12 i think, being crushed by city fans against rushing forward against the wall. The kop was undergoing work so was standing for a bit. The best pain i ever felt. Then our dads giving the stewards so much shit that we were moved to plum seats in the carling stand, but me and my mate secretly not wanting to move. Cant forget that home leg against Red Star either. Its a huge regret that ive never seen city play abroad. I only hope i get the chance one day. Worst City Experience : Wycombe FA Cup 6th round. I was distraught, I thought our semi place was booked. I was far from the only lad left in the Kop for a good half an hour after the game sitting on the steps looking and feeling desolate. Administration of course, although i was always confident we'd get out of it. And promotion that season helped temper it to be honest. Tottenhams last minute winner in the 1999 League cup final, Wolves 4-3 City after leading 3-0, knowing at that point there was absolutley no miracle in the world that could save us. Tommy Johnson scoring in THAT Play Off Final, with, lets be honest, Derby taking the piss out of us, and absolutely fearing the worst. Why is it that back then as a 10 year old I didnt think of Derby as a rival?? I t was Fores i couldnt stand. Maybe because the game that made me a city fan, despite having seen them play for years through my dad taking me (took him years to make me like football) was City 1-0 Forest on Central Match Live, October 1993, Speedie winning it for us. Also Boxing Day 1993, Watford 4-4 City Bruce Dyer scoring a hat trick past us, and me going running to my dad the following day telling him that I didnt like Leicester anymore and wanted to support Newcastle instead after watching them twat Arsenal 3-0 with Andy Cole starring on MOTD. Hes a Birmingham fan, yet he smacked my arse and told me that i would continue to support my home town club. Good man. Our first ever Prem season, my uncle coming over from Birmingham and announcing that we had tickts to see City against Arsenal at Filbo. Then saying that he only had 3, one each for him, my cousin and my dad, none of whom were City fans. I bawled my eyes out. Never since have i fallen for a joke like i did for that one. Watching city lose to Brighton in the League cup at Filbo and realising just how bad that side was despite Mark Drapers best efforts that same season. And City 0-5 Bolton. Opening day, against newly promoted supposed relegation fodder. Knowing that we were going to be relegated and that the Martin O Neill era was well and truly gone. Worst City Player : Junior Lewis. Just useless. Ive never understood the Ade Akinbiyi criticism. He wasnt good enough but it wasnt his fault was it? Whatever you say about him, he tried his heart out for us. He had scored at lower levels prolifically, and was having chances in the prem, but not putting them away. The goal is the same size. I still think to this day he could have made it with us if his confidence wasnt shot. Worst City Match : City 0-2 Brighton. League cup second round 94/95. we were absolutely dire. Also City 1-2 Wycombe FA Cup 6th round. Gutted. Worst Manager : I felt for Rob Kelly, and even Levein, who has done well everywhere else and who i think has the ability to succeed with the right resources. Its Peter Taylor all the way for me. For as much as he has proved he is an excellent COACH, he cant manage for shit. I blame him for where we are now. He had a good team to build upon, lots of money at the time, the promise of a new stadium. He should have made us big. Instead he made us a team which Junior Lewis could play in. I was so optimistic. I thought when we appointed him he was the best man for the job, and i will always remember us topping the league after 8 games of him being in charge. Then it all went badly wrong. We looked capable of qualifying for Europe through the league for much of that season, then we went on an awful run and fnished 13th. The following season was always a foregone conclusion for me. What a willy.
