Bryn Posted 8 January 2008 Posted 8 January 2008 As Holloway landed another two players, and continued working on a third signing, winger Jon Hayes left to join Northampton on loan until the end of the season.Holloway said: “He has promise but is not ready yet. He has only played for MK Dons. “How can you ask him to play in the Championship at 20? He needs games and he will get them there.†Now considering that I don't think he really has too much faith in our youngsters, I reckon that could be a sign that more will go out on loan. Anyone else agree?
DB11 Posted 8 January 2008 Posted 8 January 2008 Hope so Most of the youth teamers aren't good enough for the Championship atm so they get slated when they play which will only dent their confidence.
The Stig Posted 8 January 2008 Posted 8 January 2008 If they're not ready now, but Ollie thinks they will be in a year a two send them out on loan. Good idea if you ask me.
Asha Posted 8 January 2008 Posted 8 January 2008 Good plan, Mattock should be next. We have Sheehan in that position so we should send Mattock to League One and get some experience.
lildave3 Posted 8 January 2008 Posted 8 January 2008 Good plan, Mattock should be next. We have Sheehan in that position so we should send Mattock to League One and get some experience. Isn't Sheehan only 21/22? Left back coming in maybe? Hopefully.
Mark Posted 8 January 2008 Posted 8 January 2008 Good plan, Mattock should be next. We have Sheehan in that position so we should send Mattock to League One and get some experience. Other way round, Mattock doesn't need to be loaned out he'll get all he needs from good advice and guidance from a little more experienced left back. “How can you ask him to play in the Championship at 20? He needs games and he will get them there.†I hope that doesn't apply to Gradel as well.

I hope it doesn't aswell because if Bori gets injured we're back to good ole' N'Gotty playing on the wing. Mattock doesn't need to be loaned out. He seems to have matured early and looks fairly comfortable in this division and can only get better, but if we want to get promoted we can't expect him to deal with the pressure of playing well week in week out. He's too inconsistent for me at the moment but he's the best bet we've got.
shen Posted 8 January 2008 Posted 8 January 2008 Am I the only one that thinks it's a ridiculous comment by Holloway? How does he justify playing Stearman, Mattock, Wesolowski, Alnwick, King, A Chambers, and Zsolt then? And Fryatt at 21 is 'mature' enough?... Stupid of him to bring age into it!

You should marry the youth teamers. Mattock is promising, but he isn't cutting it atm, however much you think he is, and i'm a big fan of the lad.

Prior to the transfer window opening we didn't really have a lot of choice did we. The oldest player in our squad was Hendo at 31 so we had to play a lot of youth. But now we're signing a mixture of youth and experience to help us get out of the shit we're in. The only reason I can think of to suggest why he has allowed Hayes to go out on loan is the fact that he's only seen what we've seen, inconsistency.

shen Posted 8 January 2008 Posted 8 January 2008 Who else could he play??? He's got plenty of older players he could play instead, most of them are rejects. The point is that those I mentioned are deemed 'good enough' despite their young age. Hayes is 3 years older than Mattock, yet he gets shifted because he's 'too young'! Prior to the transfer window opening we didn't really have a lot of choice did we. The oldest player in our squad was Hendo at 31 so we had to play a lot of youth. We've got more than our fair share of youth in the squad already. He's lost an experienced figure in Fülöp and signed two ageing strikers and three young players. You could argue we're more unbalanced agewise now than before!
Mark Posted 8 January 2008 Posted 8 January 2008 You should marry the youth teamers. Mattock is promising, but he isn't cutting it atm, however much you think he is, and i'm a big fan of the lad. They're both former youth teamers.

Mattock is promising, but he isn't cutting it atm, however much you think he is, and i'm a big fan of the lad. Agreed, he has been juvenile lately. I didn't notice his distinct lack of pace last season, perhaps because of my Youth team tinted specs i wear when a youngster plays. He could do with being loaned out. We do need another left back though, Sheehan is'nt good enough either.

It's better to say' he's young and needs experience' rather than 'he's crap and he'll never get another game for me'.
shen Posted 8 January 2008 Posted 8 January 2008 Isn't it obvious? It's better to say' he's young and needs experience' rather than 'he's crap and he'll never get another game for me'. Yes, it's bloody obvious if you ask me. That's why he should say something along the lines of "Northampton offered him regular football which I can't at present" and just shut his gob immediatly after...

Holloway seems to have this disease, someone points a microphone at him and his mouth starts moving, and it doesn't stop until it's taken away.
Scow Posted 8 January 2008 Posted 8 January 2008 Holloway seems to have this disease, someone points a microphone at him and his mouth starts moving, and it doesn't stop until it's taken away. Yeah, it's called the Media Whore disease. He's not particularly diplomatic either.
Thracian Posted 9 January 2008 Posted 9 January 2008 Now considering that I don't think he really has too much faith in our youngsters, I reckon that could be a sign that more will go out on loan. Anyone else agree? That's an extremely interesting and far-reaching question.
Ric Flair Posted 9 January 2008 Posted 9 January 2008 I think his comments about Hayes weren't meant to be taken as gospel for all footballers under the age of 20. I think he was trying to convey the message that at his age and with the lack of experience he's had, he doesn't want to have to rely on him being our first choice left winger, so he's loaned him out for more experience. I'm sure he also thinks Hayes is no where near good enough yet. The likes of Stearman, Wesolowski and a few others may be completely different as both have proven themselves at this level before Ian was here and he rates them both. People shouldn't take things so literally.

People shouldn't take things so literally. We'll see. The problem is that imported players often have bigger wages, get promised some games and then find themselves competing against some quality youth players who are also part of a very tight knit group. Sometimes I wonder if it's convenient for managers to get fringe youth players out of the way to take pressure of their own signings. Gradel was an example. There's no way, given fair chance, that he wouldn't have been our first choice right winger but we'd signed Newton, presumably on decent money. The idea was clearly to play him. So it will be with the Hungarians for instance. Yet I still find it hard to imagine that a Hungarian Under 21 winger will represent a better bet than our resident Afro-French winger Gradel because I don't see many wingers at all that get the goals he does. But we'll see. Talk at the ground last night was not about Gradel anyway, it was about Andy King. Many are concerned for his place with the influx of signings because most believe he's been as good as anyone when he's played and that he's exactly the sort of pass and move footballer we need in the side. As I say though, a problem for the home grown youngsters is that it's always politically easier to leave them out than to upset the imports. Whether it is wise remains to be seen. But I beieve, so far, that sub-standard seniors have hindered the progress of these young players rather than the other way around. Anyone watching Joe Mattock and Ashley Chambers last night would realise that. Both tried far more things in that match than they ever do in the first team. They were leaders instead of followers. It really is time we had a first team that was allowed to express itself because some of the tactics so far have been a nightmare.
Daggers Posted 9 January 2008 Posted 9 January 2008 Anyone watching Joe Mattock and Ashley Chambers last night would realise that. They were having a kick-about with a bunch of children. I dare say the Elvis would have resembled Ronaldo in such company.
