NewburyFox Posted 24 October 2014 Posted 24 October 2014 The gait part wasn't all that important to me. They'll probably just give you some neutral shoes. The bigger issue was that my shoes were too small. My running store recommended buying trainers 1 size bigger because your feet expand while running. Also, I found it important to get some proper running socks, I use Feetures! socks. My favourite brand of trainers is Brooks, because I am heavy I use their Glycerin model. I buy previous seasons models (Glycerin 9) on Amazon, a. because I like that particular model and b. because they are cheaper than the current ones. Problem is testing them out before trying if they are not available at a running store. Thanks MC, I bought some new shoes like 4 months ago
Rob1742 Posted 24 October 2014 Posted 24 October 2014 Apart from playing a bit of football with mates in my thirties, I have done nothing and although not fat, I was very much unfit. In my mid forties now and started to think how unfit I was, and it bugged me massively. I put my back out a few times sweeping the leaves and lifting a bag of coal and realised I needed to do something. I kept seeing tweets from a personal trainer and one day when I was on holiday having a shit, I tweeted him and asked if he could deal with a real unfit knacker of a bloke. The guy gave me the encouragement that I could do it and I arranged to meet up to discuss it. I have now done three hours a week for 6 months and it's the best thing I have ever done. Beer gut has gone, feel much stronger, enjoy a bit of boxing and running and my back is no longer an issue. I used to look at you runners and wonder what motivated you. I can see it now, feel much better and there is no going back. If there are any old farts out there who are unfit, it's really worth making a move and making yourself fitter. I haven't a clue what I am doing, I don't have any interest in it, but for an hour three times a week i hand myself over and do what is needed to make me fitter and stronger. Seriously can't believe the difference. Initially it was very tough, but with the right PT, there are massive gains to make. I look at the progress and really if you are thinking about it, go and do it. I paid for 12 sessions outright so I couldn't quit, and it is one if the best things I have ever ever done.
Asha Posted 24 October 2014 Posted 24 October 2014 Good luck to those running the Leicester marathon or half. First one ive missed in years cos of a dodgy achilles. Good Luck All.. Yeah good luck to you all, may not be the most glamorous race in the world but at least you know EXACTLY how far you have left and your on home turf... Hope you all smash whatever targets you've set for yourselves. Thanks boys! It's pretty exciting stuff. I wouldn't choose any other marathon in the world for my first one - the fact that it's my home race makes it the most appealing
Merging Cultures Posted 24 October 2014 Posted 24 October 2014 Thanks MC, I bought some new shoes like 4 months ago ! I wasn't paying attention! What did you get?
Merging Cultures Posted 24 October 2014 Posted 24 October 2014 I just signed up for the Cape Town Two Oceans Half Marathon in April. Gives me a few months to get fit again.
Raj Posted 25 October 2014 Posted 25 October 2014 if its your first one asha take it easy, dont get drawn in at the beginning and start sprinting down London Rd!!! Oh and save some energy for the uphill ending of new walk!!! All the best all...
Asha Posted 25 October 2014 Posted 25 October 2014 I appreciate that man, I've got my running watch ready so I'll try and stay at a fair but relaxed pace throughout.
SystonFox Posted 25 October 2014 Posted 25 October 2014 Ran it two years ago. First ever one. Did 4:34 and I actually felt my fastest section was up new walk. The buzz and adrenaline was unreal with the crowds cheering and clapping. Would love to run it again but two serious ACL injuries since then (apr 13 and July 14) have hampered my fitness massively. Good luck to all and enjoy it

Glad to hear it. It's one of them things that's easy to get stuck in a rut. I did pretty much nothing since leaving school before starting to play football 2x a week 3 years ago and then started PT sessions and it makes the world of difference. I went from being a bit part winger to being a Centre Mid and won player of the season last year. I moved to Italy 8 weeks ago and have been doing short runs to try and keep fit as I don't want to undo all the hard work and it's all about routine. Thanks boys! It's pretty exciting stuff. I wouldn't choose any other marathon in the world for my first one - the fact that it's my home race makes it the most appealing Good luck, would love to do a marathon one day.
Sir Fynwy Posted 25 October 2014 Posted 25 October 2014 I had to pull out of the LHM yesterday because of a knee injury but I will be marshalling the course, best bit is I sold my place onto a guy who came 13th at the Robin Hood in 1 hour 13 minutes and if he can't get the name changed I'll be recorded as a top finisher
Asha Posted 26 October 2014 Posted 26 October 2014 Wooooooo I did it boys! Official time of 3:58, chip time was 3:55 and I'm so happy that I snuck under four hours. They say you have to respect the distance of a marathon and maaaan does that hit home when you get to about 16 miles and your legs are on fire. Even though I felt like my pace was plummeting towards the end I managed to hold on; I wanted just to finish and potentially get sub-4 hours so I'm really happy with my time. What a fantastic event too, the amount of support even in places like Thrussington and East Goscote was unbelievable!
FoxesAreBlue Posted 26 October 2014 Posted 26 October 2014 Well done Asha, good work. Gonna do another?
Stuliasz Posted 26 October 2014 Posted 26 October 2014 Well done Asha! I can't even contemplate how hard a marathon must be. Done a few halves, including Leicester last year and not in any one of them have I had the desire to run another step after crossing the finish line, let alone doing the same distance over again! Enjoy your achievement with a well earned drink or two
Asha Posted 26 October 2014 Posted 26 October 2014 Thanks guys! I've got two halves booked (Donington in four weeks and Silverstone in March) and I might have a look at a marathon abroad somewhere next year Definitely don't have the impulse to join the 100 club any time soon
Sir Fynwy Posted 26 October 2014 Posted 26 October 2014 Thanks guys! I've got two halves booked (Donington in four weeks and Silverstone in March) and I might have a look at a marathon abroad somewhere next year Definitely don't have the impulse to join the 100 club any time soon Silverstone was absolutely awful this year, the weather was terrible, David Wier said it was the worst race he'd ever taken part in, I really didn't enjoy it, pray for good weather.
Raj Posted 26 October 2014 Posted 26 October 2014 Respect to Asha! Great time too mate. Ive done many halves but like Stuliasz says i had no desire to run another step after doing 13 miles let alone another 13!!! Well Done
UrbanFox Posted 27 October 2014 Posted 27 October 2014 Managed my 1st ever half marathon yesterday, got a time of 1.51.48 which I was really pleased with although I can hardly walk this morning How people can run a full marathon I don't know I was in peices running up new walk at the end!
David Guiza Posted 28 October 2014 Posted 28 October 2014 Finished my first ever marathon on Sunday after doing my first ever half last year in 1:48. Aimed to get under 5 hours due to shin splints and managed 4:35 so not too bad. Legs are still in bits today though, you don't realise how long 26miles is until you're about on the floor after 19 and realise you've still got another 7 to manouver. Just happy to say I finished!

Congrats, that's an insane achievement! And there was me trying to build up the motivation to go for a 30 minute run this morning.....
David Guiza Posted 28 October 2014 Posted 28 October 2014 Congrats, that's an insane achievement! And there was me trying to build up the motivation to go for a 30 minute run this morning..... Thanks very much! To be fair it is a lot easier with everyone else running along side you, I never used to be able to find the motivation to run outside of sport but the more I did it the easier it became. Don't want to run for at least a month now though haha.
Raj Posted 28 October 2014 Posted 28 October 2014 great efforts urban and esp david....thats top notch
Asha Posted 31 October 2014 Posted 31 October 2014 My legs feel like they've recovered from Sunday now, anyone lining up on the grid for the first Donington Half on the 23rd November?
VLC86 Posted 31 October 2014 Posted 31 October 2014 Anybody do orienteering?Anyone into cribbage?I have got myself into the habit of going on 2/3 mile runs every day recently and although not a massive distance I am noticing the results.
General Smuts Posted 2 November 2014 Posted 2 November 2014 Well I've been accepted onto the London Marathon for the first time this year. I've tried to get on a few times in the past and assumed this year would be the same. Did anyone else from here get in? Popped out for a couple of miles on Friday night which I felt OK with until some trick or treaters shouted 118 118 at me. Cheeky feckers. Legs are still a bit leaden but I'll drag myself into the rain at half time in the Manc derby to do another couple of miles. Anyone who has seen me recently knows that I'm in no shape to run to the shops let alone 26 miles. Just finishing is going to be a ****ing huge achievement. Bricking it if I'm honest but hoping to raise as much as humanly possible for Cancer Reseach UK and make it the whole hog come March.
