reynard Posted 26 September 2013 Posted 26 September 2013 Chap i was talking to today has been rejected 6 years in a row. That is remarkable. Especially as this is the last year that five rejections and you get automatic entry so he must have been very unlucky or for some reason didn't take up the place he would have been offered. Still crap luck though.
The Blur Posted 30 September 2013 Posted 30 September 2013 I just recently downloaded a mobile running app called Map My Run but when I went for a 20 minutes run last Sunday, it said I only burned 3 calories. Is this normal?

Is this normal? You probably burned more than 3 calories writing that post so no that is not normal. I reckon I burn 500-600 calories on a decent 30 minute run. Will depend on age and weight though.
Asha Posted 6 October 2013 Posted 6 October 2013 First half-marathon today in Cardiff and registered a decent 1:43. Really happy with that, it's about 12 minutes faster than I've run when training so the excitement of the event obviously carried me a little bit.

Rincewind Posted 10 October 2013 Posted 10 October 2013 Leicester Marathon this Sunday. Action Homeless has a team of 40 runners (dressed in orange) to celebrate their 40 years aniversary. I shall be there in a DNO reporter capacity. We have our own tent/gazebo on Victoria Park. If you are there as a supporter or runner come and say hello. We may even find a cup of tea for you. The AH team consists of staff and service users from hostels who have been training on a regular basis. One of the favourites is a young lad of 20 who ended up in a hostel after a relationship breakup. Since then he has taken up running, helped prepare a buffet lunch for a lottery rep visit, is registered for two or three training courses at Apex and is training to be a chef. A determined young man who is proof that lives can be turned around. He has also recently moved into his own place. Good luck to all who are doing the half or full marathon.
Guest ttfn Posted 12 October 2013 Posted 12 October 2013 Is it sad that the local parkrun is becoming one of the highlights of my week? Am absolutely desperate to break 20 minutes for 5k. Have done it on a treadmill at 1% incline so I think I've got a shot on a flat course.
Rincewind Posted 12 October 2013 Posted 12 October 2013 Thanks for bringing this thread up. Nearly forgot about the marathon tomorrow. I am suppose to be at Vicky Part from 8.30 to cheer the Action Homeless team on as said in previous post.
Rincewind Posted 13 October 2013 Posted 13 October 2013 If you visit the Action Homeless/DNO tent Mags is the tea-lady. I'm sure she'll make you a brew. She is supposed to be running but had to pull out.
Asha Posted 13 October 2013 Posted 13 October 2013 Anyone here with experiences of running clubs? Are they worthwhile? I'm thinking it might help me raise my game a bit running with other people.
David Guiza Posted 13 October 2013 Posted 13 October 2013 Completed my first ever Half Marathon today in 1hour 48mins, pretty impressed with myself! Definitely considering keeping up the training throughout the year now, feel a lot healthier and fitter ever since I started.
Stadt Posted 13 October 2013 Posted 13 October 2013 Anybody done a rock solid race? And can you do any if you're 16?

See any with bright orange vests?

Asha Posted 20 October 2013 Posted 20 October 2013 So after finding out there's a half marathon at Silverstone in March I'm really keen to do that! But before I book, I'm wondering what's the best way to get from Leicester to Silverstone that early on a Sunday morning? Maybe anyone who has been to the F1 can help with that. Alternatively, is anyone from here going that I can catch a lift with? Also, went along to a running club last Wednesday, placed myself in quite a high group for interval training and felt absolutely fvcked afterwards Had to miss the park run on Saturday cause I could still barely walk

However, compared to other races it is predominately flat. You start off on the old layout starting grid (indeed the old paddock and pit lane is where you will warm up, leave your bags etc). You then run a full lap of the track and as you come off the old final corner you run into and down the old pit lane and do a lap of the circuits on the inside of the main track. Then you run all the way around the outside of the track (that's the quiet bit!) before coming back in, down the new pit lane and paddock and running the F1 circuit in reverse to finish where you started. His race is classed as the London Marathon warm up race, it's is actually set up by The London Marathon. Therefore you get a lot of support from the likes of adidas and lucozade etc. As for getting there, my running partner has always driven us down in the morning and gone for a pub lunch on the way back. Just leave PLENTY of time to get there as it does get busy. We left leicester at around 8am, for a race start at 12pm. Gives enough time for you not to be panicking and rushing around. There is plenty of parking spaces and it's free too.
RobHawk Posted 28 October 2013 Posted 28 October 2013 Slowly easing myself back into running and loving it so far. There's talk of a Swansea half marathon so that's my current goal. Just a quick question, I can only run on roads in my area, should i be worried about shin splints?

What do you use or what do you recommend .Not worried about budget too much. One of her Xmas / birthday pressies( yep bday Xmas day) In my experience, I don't think it's about magnificent sound quality - you are usually too busy, breathing, sweating, moving (and possibly hurting) to admire the sound quality. For me, it is more about whether the earphones stay on and are comfy, so I like over-ear "bud" types. My wife prefers over the ear "In ear" types (which I find a bit, ahem, intrusive) and I see people at parkrun wearing full cans. Depends what your wife wears when she is not running - in-ear, bud-type or cans. My regular ones cost me £14 from Tesco and they do the job perfectly. I used to have some decent Sennheiser ones you can get for under £50 - the nearest I can find now would be Sennheiser Sports OCX 685i. I stood on them...

Thanks for that,it's as you say, staying on and comfy, but I'm aware the best way is for her to try them so I will keep the receipt.

It's a good one for a PB if it's not too windy because it's relatively flat and there's plenty of room. Can't help you on the transport though! They put on coaches for £25 from London so I just did that. Also, good work with the Cariff half! Great time, especially for a first! Anyway, I've stopped running really. I've moved office that's a lot further away from my house so used it as an opportunity to up my cycling instead. Easier on my fragile knees and rubbish calf.

RobHawk Posted 20 November 2013 Posted 20 November 2013 Still running 2 or 3 times a week and building myself back up! hoping to be able to do a solid 5k without stopping by Christmas! Can't believe how unfit i was! Definately feeling the benefit i just wish i had more time and wasn't trying to squeeze it in somewhere all the time!
