RobHawk Posted 11 February 2014 Posted 11 February 2014 Another 5.5km last night and another 15 seconds shaved off my 5km time. Feet still sore but looking at getting some specialist running socks, a friend of mine says they make a big difference and you can pick some up from sports Direct for £5 so i'll see how that goes! Well and truly getting into the routine of running 5km 2-3 times a week though which is the most pleasing thing. Just gotta keep it up!
leicesterisme Posted 12 February 2014 Posted 12 February 2014 Started back running on Monday, and went out again yesterday, only for 20 minutes at a slow pace as I'm so unfit at the minute and that's all I can manage without killing myself. Anyway, towards the end of my run my calves become incredibly tight and when I finish my run and slow down to walking pace I have to actually stand still for about 20 seconds as I literally cannot walk they are that tight. I stretch well before going out and always warm up with a quick walk for 5 minutes before running and also warm down with 5 minutes walking after finishing running. These 2 runs are the first since November when I could run 10k 3-4 times a week comfortably, I never had this problem then, obviously they felt a bit tight after finishing running but nothing that you wouldn't expect. Still using the same running shoes as I did back in November aswell, bought them back in September so they're not even that old either. Does anyone know a reason/ solution for this Or is it because I have just started back after a while of doing absolutely zero exersice?
danny. Posted 12 February 2014 Posted 12 February 2014 "Or is it because I have just started back after a while of doing absolutely zero exersice?" yup - it's this. You need to start much smaller steps and build up. It's absolutely horrible how quick you lose fitness, I went from running 40min 10k / 1:30HM / 18min 5k to not being able to run 2 miles without stopping after 1 year out. I'm still shit now!
Leicesterpool Posted 12 February 2014 Posted 12 February 2014 I remember I used to be able to go for jog for about 70 minutes non stop but for the last few weeks i've struggling I'm only seem to able to do 30 minutes now! Not sure what's gone, I use to have alot of energy before going for a jog but now it seems such a tiring chore. Anyone got any advice what i should take before for going for a jog?

Don't "take" anything just run more often, you're obviously not as fit as you used to be. Happens to everyone.

cambridgefox Posted 12 February 2014 Posted 12 February 2014 Mrs is doing the London marathon for Barnardos for the first time.Really getting into the long hard training. She doesn't mind the 2hr runs but doesn't enjoy the 1 mile fast 1 minute recovery x6 sessions. She is getting near her charity £s and because her mum went through Barnardos and they liked her story, the marathon organisers have written to her as they want to interview her and do a focus spot about her mum.Training session with Daley Thompson week on Saturday should be good.
Steven Posted 23 February 2014 Posted 23 February 2014 Can someone explain energy levels to me. Just back from my run and for the entire time I just felt down on power.

Can you post a link to it if it's on line? Might be able to post it on the DNO blog. Will be a good news story. We are hoping to put together another edition of the paper too. Could promote it in that.
cambridgefox Posted 9 March 2014 Posted 9 March 2014 Mrs competed in her 1st half marathon today in Cambridge at the tender age of 43( classed as a Veteran!) Finished in 1 hr 57 mins which was better than half the field and in the top 30% for her age group. She is chuffed she got below 2hr. She does have tenderness in the tendon above the ankle( had last week) not too bad when running but stiffened up now.Anyone had this?ice and rest I assume.Told her to rest for a few days and test, problem when you have the London Marathon in a month.

If its Achilles soreness (and that's what your description sounds like) most experts would tell you to let it heal by not running at all, but I understand that's not an option given what she has coming up. I use RICE - rest, ice, compression and elevation. I also stretch and warm up a lot more than I used to prior to running and then warm down after. Keeps the soreness at bay but from what runners tell me, the only way to make it stop is to see a Physio and then follow their inevitable instruction to not run for several months.

Cheers,it is difficult with her marathon training but to be fair she is not in severe pain .Started doing all the things you suggested so looks like we are doing the right thing and will see how it goes.Thankyou.
FoxesAreBlue Posted 9 March 2014 Posted 9 March 2014 I agree with Vacamion. I bet that it's rare for many amatuer runner to reach the start line of a marathon feeling absolutely 100%. It's tremendously difficult to get the training spot on. The good news is that she will be heading into her taper soon so that can only help her to regain strength. If London will be her 1st marathon the main thing is to forget about the time and enjoy the occasion. It's a cliché but thatst he best thing to to. It's one of the biggest running events in the world and she will feel a huge rush when she finishes. Tell her to read the message they put up on the finish gantry above the clocks as she approaches the line. Practically had me in tears when I read that as I lumbered up The Mall two years ago! Best of luck to her, she's in for one hell of a day.

I've found magnesium oil (especially the sports spray) brilliant for my dodgy achilles. This stuff: http://www.betteryou.uk.com/Magnesium-Oil-Sport-Spray You can get it in most health food shops or online from Amazon, eBay, etc.

cambridgefox Posted 13 April 2014 Posted 13 April 2014 Mix bag really, the wife probably set a record. She had to go to the medical tent after 2 miles, she has had some tightening in her calf last week and it flared up after a few miles, really tightened after 14, but battled through to make 5hrs 04min.Well below what she wanted and she felt frustrated after all the training she had endured in all weathers, but I stand up to ANYONE who trains and completes this.so proud of her tonight.
Webbo Posted 13 April 2014 Posted 13 April 2014 Fair play Cambridge, I wouldn't even attempt it. It's shows a lot of determination to get across the line in those circumstances.
