I'll never understand people who actually stay in Leicester to go to university...

I don't know how Uni works, I've never been, never been slightly interested in going, e.t.c, but presumably certain Uni's only do certain course's? :dunno:

Maybe Leicester is one of the uni's doing certain course, for people who know what they want to to do after Uni, and will actually provide a career they want to follow up, rather than wasters who go to Uni for away from where they live, doing some course they have no interest in, something that they won't follow up or provide them with a career after uni, and just go for the 'Uni lifestyle/experience' far away from home (*That doesn't apply to all people who go far away from home to Uni's, don't get me wrong but it applys to quite a few I know)

Also staying close to home = Save on money, keeping you out of more debt.

No doubt the Uni lifestyle is great but I don't feel like i've missed out on anything (Well maybe wasting a few years of not earning, and not getting in debt :dunno:).

Classic Matt post on university.

I can understand people doing post-grad degrees at uni, but for me well over half of the experience is all about getting away to somewhere different for me. I had no intentions of staying in and around Leicester and it turned out to be an excellent decision. I genuinely believe that some people simply can't bear the thought of being away from home for prolonged periods of time, which at the age of 18 seems quite pathetic. Nobody will ever cite that as a reason but there are plenty of people like that.

People will pull up the debt thing which ultimately does amount to a hell of a lot of money, but you don't start paying it off until you earn £15k. Plus the payments are minimal.

Each to their own and all that but for me the first three years of university are probably the best of your life and shouldn't be spent in the comfort of your own city... unless obviously the course you want to do really is the best option in Leicester. That's rarely the case though in truth.

For the record I went to Uni at Leicester and had a quality time (idiot girlfriends aside)...but i'm not from the area (since birth) so I guess that's different. Good City to be in for Uni though - strong student population, decent clubs and bars, good academically, big but not overwhelmingly so, good sports teams (& LCFC). Miss it a bit actually.

The first year - seriously, enjoy it, make the most of it and live like a fvcking King or Queen.

Second year, shit gets more serious and you actually have to behave, which is a ballache.

Third year, I have absolutely no idea, waiting to get back and finish my degree. Realised this year that the holidays from uni, although attractive at the end of first year, are way too long and the sooner it comes back the better to be fair. No idea what I'm gona do at the end of next year but a masters or a further year have been mooted (which, considering I hate mooting, is ironic, to say the least).

So, so glad I got out of Leicester to do my degree though. If truth be told, can't even see me living back there again. Even the summer holidays in Leicester are too much for me.

Going to live in a shitty, tiny shared flat and paying for it doesn't appeal when I could be at home. I've never been away from my parents for more than a week, so I guess I'd miss home a lot.

Back on the 19th. Looking forward to getting stuck in again now, been a long ol' Summer without a job.

Personal target is a First - more than achievable and pretty necessary for the sort of graduate schemes I want to get on.

Trent 24th September.

Although i start my new job in nottingham tomorrow, so going to be pretty used to the city by the time I move in :).

Strongly agree with this, I'd imagine Leicester wasn't my hometown I'd be well up for going Uni of or DMU, really good student city, but it is all about getting away.

Can't wait to start 2nd year now, these 2 weeks are going to really drag.

Uni is for wimps. The Army is for proper men. ;)

I thought proper men were in the navy

What was that for exactly?

Immature response to you saying you're going to uni in sheep country...

No in seriousness I've never really explored Derby as a City so no idea what it's actually like other than football-related stereotypes. Sure you'll have a great time

Same, these holidays are too long. I never thought I'd say that but they are. Get some hours in at work over the next two weeks then I can finally move into this house I've been paying obscene amounts for three months for... without living in it. Excellent.

After the recent student bashing, I thought I should get back to the University thread and come up with a bold question:

Does anybody know what studying is like with the University of Bristol or the University of Westminster?

Interested in going for a post-grad in film - in about two years time or so, once I've made enough savings.

Westminster in particular would eat a rather large hole in my pocket.

I live at home and go to leicester uni, dont see the reason to owe an extra 15,000 grand just so i can do my own washing and cooking. I still do all the social things, and do plenty of social stuff with uni mates, cant say i regret it but i'll admit there are times when i think i would have preffered being in another city, but it simply isnt worth the debt imo.

Also picked leicester because it was the best uni I could get in with my grades, as I got BBC, Leicester wanted ABB, and im doing Geography, with leicester being top ten uni for geography (think its top 5 in guardian)

Thought I would bump this as it is the time of year again that Uni applications, etc begin.

Anybody studied/studying Physics and/or is at UCL, Warwick, Nottingham, Leicester, Lougborough, Leeds or York??

Boom. Offered an interview at Swansea. Means I have to go to Swansea for a holiday.

Anyone been to Swansea? Gone the uni? Live in Swansea? It looks nice, but fuck me it's far away.

Swansea is full of fanny. Trust me

Full of fanny and the university is literally on one of the 7 beaches in the city. Fucking yeahhhh.

But you'll probably get murdered by their chav dickhead boyfriends first.

Stayed there for a few weeks a couple of years back and was bored after the first day (unless pound shops are your thing?).

Wish I would have went to Leeds, Sheffield or Brighton.

I'm in Nottingham and it's quality as a student. Well recommend it. The nightlife is unreal compared to Leicester. It's not as bad as people make out with gun crime and all that. Experienced no trouble so far and no-one I know has either.

Only 30 mins on the train from Leicester as well so you can go back for the games and go back whenever you want.

Swansea is a massive shithole.

Probably not relevant, but Sunderland didn't look great when I passed through on the Megabus...
