Someone at work keeps saying 'porthole' instead of portal :frusty:

There's never a day goes by when I don't want to hurl something at my computer when I read "marquee signing" instead of "marque signing". The fact that it is now accepted form with sports journalists just serves to piss me off even more. lol

Never really thought about this. Logically it should be marque but marquee has become accepted. Makes no sense when you think about it.

Porthole is one of my favourite video games, bettered only possibly by Porthole 2.

No.

It was marque, as in a signing of marque. It was something of note and repute, a signing which made a statement.

People who can't read properly pronounced it marquee - and now attempt to explain it's because it's like some kind of big top signing. Which is moronic, but this transformation of the language took place and has become entrenched. And it pisses the fvck out of me.

I find the best and most passive aggressive way to deal with it is to laugh in their face and say "ha ha porthole! classic!"

I feel like we've reached peak footballer anecdote on podcasts now. Really struggling for content. It's getting to the point where the ex player is like "so we're playing this game right, and a ball comes in the box yeah, and you're not going to believe this, but the opposition striker jumps up and heads it into the goal (hysterical screeching laughter off mic).... and I'm looking at Smithy like what has just happened... honestly it was unbelievable...."

Similar with non footballer football content. There's a guy who started out a bit quirky and entertaining who has ran out of decent ideas but still creates content regardless, last one I've seen of his was how long it takes to seat in every seat in a small stand in Northern Ireland. Barrel is being scraped.

I can't find this definition anywhere, which suggests either 1) You are wrong, or b) it is so entrenched everyone but you are too embarrassed to mention the real root of the phrase.

I am going with iii) both.

Except for political podcasts where Trump provides so much content they are struggling to edit them down to reasonable length.

The stay humble slight every time Man City lose is getting boring now.

Yes they are losing so often, it’s rather lost its effect.  Probably hear it again on Sunday, unfortunately.

I get when Arsenal beat them since Haaland said it to Arteta but the rest are a bit bizarre
