Jay Posted 25 May 2009 Posted 25 May 2009 15 players in the squad on over £50 000 a week No relegation clauses massive drop in tv income Taking a quick look at the first team squad I can see 95% of it having to be shipped out regardless of if they want to or not DF Fabricio Coloccini 3 DF José Enrique 4 MF Kevin Nolan 6 DF Caçapa 7 MF Joey Barton 8 MF Danny Guthrie 9 FW Obafemi Martins 10 FW Michael Owen (captain) 11 MF Damien Duff 12 DF Sébastien Bassong 13 GK Steve Harper 15 MF Ignacio González (on loan from Valencia) 16 DF Ryan Taylor 17 FW Alan Smith 18 MF Jonás Gutiérrez 19 FW Xisco 20 MF Geremi (vice-captain) 21 DF Habib Beye 22 MF Nicky Butt (vice-captain) 23 FW Shola Ameobi 24 FW Peter Løvenkrands 27 DF Steven Taylor 30 DF David Edgar 36 FW Mark Viduka 39 FW Andy Carroll can easily see those with a strikethrough leaving before august.
C-man Posted 25 May 2009 Posted 25 May 2009 I'd get rid of them all except Steven Taylor, Andy Carroll, David Edgar and Steve Harper. Some of them quite clearly couldn't give a shit. If they want to go straight back up, they'd sell everyone else for whatever they can fetch, and approach the best Championship players who would be proud to wear the barcode shirt.
fantastic_mr_fox Posted 25 May 2009 Posted 25 May 2009 Not to mention the loss in gate recipts, sponsorship etc The clubs coming down this year will have huge debts - the parachute payment will be easily swallowed up - to be honest they shouldn't pose a great challenge (especially financially) as any other club in that division
SOCCERROO FOX Posted 25 May 2009 Posted 25 May 2009 Certaintly doesn't look good. But i still belive they will have the necceary coin to lure a couple of decent championship standard players.
Basingstoke Fox Posted 25 May 2009 Posted 25 May 2009 Guthrie would be awesome in this league, even if he is sh*t at tackling.
fantastic_mr_fox Posted 25 May 2009 Posted 25 May 2009 They won't have the funds to attract good quality players - they just don't have the funding for that - especially newcastle who could well be in trouble
Legend_in_blue Posted 25 May 2009 Posted 25 May 2009 They're in serious trouble. Of the 3 premiership teams relegated, WBA will be in the strongest position. I can't see them finishing in the top 6 tbh. They need to get back to some sort of winning mentality. And before that they need a squad! Extremely difficult to turn this around.
Narborough Bod Posted 25 May 2009 Posted 25 May 2009 I hope they are in deep shit. Can't stand the whole Newcastle are wonderful hype that the media portray. They haven't won the league in over 80 years and the FA Cup in over 50 years yet they have this ludicrous expectation. Burnley won the league more recently then them but no one is going on about them as a sleeping giant etc. Please, do a Leeds.
Webbo Posted 25 May 2009 Posted 25 May 2009 Newcastle will still have the biggest buying power in our division. If they get in a decent manager they should be favourites to win it next year.
Darkzzz_ Posted 25 May 2009 Posted 25 May 2009 It is hard to see how they are going to bounce straight back isn't it. The club is potentially another Leeds United in the making. I personally don't see them falling as bad as Leeds though. They are certainly going to lose the majority of their squad, but to be honest you would be mad to want some of those players. I don't buy into all this Michael Owen is too good for the championship nonsense that I have heard some people say on the internet. That is absolute nonsense, he is a woeful striker and there are better strikers than him in the Championship. I certainly won't be fearing them next season at all, with or without Owen.

That is absolute nonsense, he is a woeful striker and there are better strikers than him in the Championship. Like who?

Don't let what has happened to him at Newcastle impare your opinion of him. His constant injuries don't do him any favours but, for me, he's still the best English finisher playing at the moment. If he was to play in the Championship next year whilst been fighting fit, he would tear this league apart.
Darkzzz_ Posted 25 May 2009 Posted 25 May 2009 Like who? Take a look at the championship goal scoring charts, there are players in there who I would take over Owen. I would even take all of the league one top scorers over him. He is crap. Overpaid crap at that.
Guest Bilo Posted 25 May 2009 Posted 25 May 2009 A financial carcrash I reckon, as I've said in another thread. With the number of players they will have no choice but to offload due to their wages, I really can't see them justifying their status as favourites. Make no mistake, everything about Newcastle is geared for the Premiership and they will be completely unprepared for life alongside Doncaster and Scunthorpe. It's a Catch 22 really, as they probably won't go up due to the numbers of players leaving but really need to if they are to avoid financial meltdown a la Leeds and Southampton. Desperate times for the Geordies.
James. Posted 25 May 2009 Posted 25 May 2009 I would even take all of the league one top scorers over him. He is crap. That's almost signature worthy!
Tomassi Posted 25 May 2009 Posted 25 May 2009 Owen has been shit for years and he is definately not the best finisher in england at the moment

If he was to play in the Championship next year whilst been fighting fit, he would tear this league apart. Correct. Owen has suffered from terrible luck with injuries and being part of a very poor side. If he could have a decent run with injuries and enjoy better service, he would score 20 odd goals in the Premiership without too many problems. God knows how many he'd put away in the Championship, but there is absolutely no chance of a £100,000 a week striker playing for them in this division. He hasn't given up on re-establishing himself in the England set-up and will want to give himself the best opportunity of doing that by transferring to a Premiership club.
Tomassi Posted 25 May 2009 Posted 25 May 2009 also, im not as sure that newcastle will be able to offload as many players... how many are realistically going to earn the same wage elsewhere?
Libertine Posted 25 May 2009 Posted 25 May 2009 Probably do them good tbh. They've been flirting with it for 4/5 years, going nowhere. We were exactly the same and look what we did. Not saying they'll go straight back up though.
Darkzzz_ Posted 25 May 2009 Posted 25 May 2009 I don't hate him, I was a big fan of his when he was at Liverpool and I thought he done well (considering his starts) at Madrid. Yes Ched, your right about his injuries, that is a fair point. I do feel for him, but he just doesn't look anywhere near the standard he once was and therefore I don't think he would be out of place in the championship at all. I hope he can hit back and and prove me wrong, I really do.
Koke Posted 25 May 2009 Posted 25 May 2009 I see where Nathko is coming from. Who would take a risk on Michael Owen now? Nobody. He was good back in his days, but he's fucking woeful now. And his 100k a week wage demands won't do him any favours either. Top 6 would definitely not have him. Spurs & Man City can both do a lot better than Owen, so they won't be interested either, and let's be perfectly honest, he isn't worth the risk at all. Exceptional player on his day, but has been declining for a good few years now which is quite sad considering he's only 29.
Bert Posted 25 May 2009 Posted 25 May 2009 Take a look at the championship goal scoring charts, there are players in there who I would take over Owen. I would even take all of the league one top scorers over him. He is crap. Overpaid crap at that. I really thought you knew your football. I wish I could score 40 goals for England and be crap. He's not been as good as he used to be, but that's down to injuries, If fully fit and given a proper run in a decent team, he'll be back to near his best.
Kilworthfox Posted 25 May 2009 Posted 25 May 2009 He is short of match practice that is all. He will be off to Everton Villa or Man City IMO. A big club will gamble on him and his fitness, but he will definitely have to drop his £100k per week salary. It is all down to his ability to score goals and he has the ability to do that at the highest level still , remember he is only 29 people have written him off before and he has always come back. It seems that people would love to see England's best current goal threat finished for good? I think that view is driven by the media who just want to sell papers!
