From the livestream:

Weale 6 - Guthries shot was about the only one of note that hit the target, and there wasn't much he could do about that. Dealt well with the few crosses that they did produce

Neilson 6 - Some ridiculously harsh marks for him tonight. Was probably the player that ran the most today. Did some good overlapping runs in the first half that N'Guessan failed to spot, but when he eventually crossed, he rarely got any air underneath it or got the ball past the first man. His passing declined as the game progressed, but he didn't have many options. Hopefully he will improve his delivery and understanding with N'Guessan as the season progresses. Decent at the back

Hobbs 6 - Their lone Ranger caused problems all night, and he got fooled a bit too easy for the goal, but otherwise decent. Distribution was a lot better than Browns.

Brown 6 - Did his job defensively, but atrocius passing most of the time. With Wellens and Oakley often available he chose to punt it long straight to their fullbacks. Dominant in the air though. Definite hand ball in the first half.

Berner 6 - A bit slow, and was in trouble at the start of the game. They often broke down our left side and he did look quite exposed at times. Did reasonably well as they didn't manage to create much despite that. Made a few runs into the box in the second half as he was one of the few that made some useful runs. Little came out of it though.

N'Guessan 5 - Started out well, but faded badly. As others have mentioned, his decision-making cost us when we were looking to break. Didn't notice Neilsons runs half the time, and ended up getting caught in possession. He won't be up against Enrique every week which is a relief. He tried though, and maybe would've been useful up front late on.

Wellens 7 - All hope hinged on him if we were to open up their defense. He's a quality player. Time and again however, Howard was the preferred solution which worked well in the first half admittedly. Congestion in midfield and lack of anticipation by others meant that the final ball often ended up in Newcastle ranks. Looks to have a decent partnership with Oakley. Worked hard and covered well defensively too, but didn't support the front men enough.

Oakley 6 - Battled well got stuck in, but ultimately lost out against Barton and Guthrie. A bit similar to Wellens in that he didn't offer much support, but his one cross he did get in wasn't far from being a very dangerous one.

Gallagher 4 - Apart from the good and the poor free kick in the first half, he had no impact whatsoever.

Howard 7 - Imperious up front, and had it not been for him, we wouldn't have mustered a single chance. Had the upper hand on Smith all game, and liked the fact that he tried to shoot even if they were potshots. Unlucky not to score with the deflected header.

Fryatt 6 - He ran a lot and did well to force the corner that led to Howards chance. Should've scored/passed, which he will probably regret. Didn't do too well collecting Howards flickons, but hopefully he will get a bit sharper.

Subs:

Waghorn 4 - Nothing came off for him. Wasn't on the same wavelength as any of his teammates and had no impact.

Dyer 4 - Same as above. We were desperately looking for an outlet on the left, but because Wellens, Oakley and Waghorn couldn't support Howard, he had to drift inwards leaving Berner alone out on the flank.

Adams N/A - Should've come on a lot sooner for Neilson or Berner. Didn't have time to make an impact.

Weale - 7 - A couple of smart stops, no chance with the goal.

Neilson - 6 - Not that bad but having a long throw is no good if you can't find a blue shirt.

Berner - 5 - I'm still not convinced. Just looks too lightweight at times.

Brown - 6 - Lucky with the handball but kept their fowards quiet most of the night

Hobbs - 5 - Looked uneasy and let Ranger get too much of the ball

Wellens - 7 - Star man again, chases back, stays composed.

Oakley - 5 - Went missing in the second half but is building up a good understanding with Wellens.

N'Guessan - 5 - Looks a no trick pony at the moment. I know Gradel can't cross but N'Guessan makes him look like Ronaldo.

Gallagher - 5 - Out of position, one good free kick and one embarrassing one.

Howard - 7 - Won or at least challenged everything up top, very unlucky with his 1st half header.

Fryatt - 6 - Got found out in the second half, should have buried his chance.

Dyer - 4, Adams - N/A, Waghorn - 4.

Weale - 6 - Did what he had to do well enough. Kicking wasn't up to much, though.

Berner - 5 - Doesn't really have much pace and that got found out a bit tonight. Still solid enough.

Brown - 7 - Won virtually everything in the air, looked to marshall the defence well.

Hobbs - 5 - Slack. Must've just been an off day. Poor attmept at a tackle in the lead up to the goal.

Neilson - 5 - See Berner.

Gallagher - 5 - A decent enough free kick but never really saw much of the ball, looked frustrated. Would like to see him used as a striker more than a winger.

Wellens - 7 - Kept the game ticking along nicely, keeps it simple, uses the long ball as a last resort.

Oakley - 6 - Anonymous in parts, decent in others.

N'Guessan - 5 - When he beat Enrique in the first few minutes I thought he'd be a threat, but he didn't have the directness I'd have liked, and seemed to lose control of the ball more than once.

Howard - 5 - Certainly not him at his best. Delivery to him was woeful, though.

Fryatt - 5 - One or two nice touches, got himself in some good positions, but just lacked that little bit of quality where it mattered.

Overall I'd have liked to have seen Adams start, or at least come on earlier, I rate him as a more creative player than either Dyer or N'Guessan, and Gallagher didn't really look much to shout about on the wing. Overall though a solid display against what will most likely be the toughest test of the season.

N'Guessan 5 - Dyer's twin for form

Oakley 6

Wellens 7 - Citys Best Player

Gallagher 6 - needs to play right side or up front

Fryatt 6 - C'mon Hull offer us 4m + Folan(!)

Howard 7 - first half was good, but too slow to do anything but flick it

Commentators 0 - wankers, Birtles needs to be shot immediately. He was practically jizzing over Guthrie, Smith, Nolan and Ranger!!!

Also, Alan Smith is a cock, we made him look good.

From the pub:

Weale, Nielsen, Brown, Hobbs, Berner 6 - all ok enough but at times each of them was undone by better opponents, and none of them appear to be able to pass straight

N'Guessan 6 - Always getting himself into space and making himself available, but so far not then delivering. Hopefully will improve

Oakley 7 - Best midfielder for me, looking to make things happen

Wellens 6 - Thought he seemed quiet

Gallagher 6 - Given he's not a left winger he did ok, but if you're going to take Fryatt off, why not try Gallagher in his actual position playing with Steve Howard

Howard 7 - Worked hard, won good headers, increasingly to no effect as no-one bothered to get into good positions

Fryatt 7 - Looked dangerous, it was a bad miss, but at the moment looks like he can do it at this level

Waghorn 0 - For City fans of my vintage, this was a performance to evoke the memory of one Tommy English, possibly the worst player I've ever seen at City. In half an hour he failed to touch the ball, make more than one run, make a tackle, challenge for anything, or look bothered. Given he did the same at Ipswich, it's not looking promising

Dyer 4 - A couple of decent touches, generally ran around like a headless chicken without the ball, unclear where he was playing, what he was doing, or why he was brought on at all

Adams n/a - Although in 3 minutes he did more than Lloyd and Waghorn combined

Pearson 5 - He's built a team that will compete at this level, but against better players the cracks show a bit, and his subs were terrible.

Tbf to Waghorn the Newcastle defence kept Fryatt so quiet second half i forgot he was actually playing, and as Waggy is in the similiar mould the same tactics worked on both players.

Weale 7 - Looked solid enough. Was unsighted by Brown's ludicrous positioning for their goal

Neilson 6.5 - Solid in the tackle, but wouldn't bet my life on him making a successful pass

Hobbs 4 - Absolutely stinking display. I didn't even think Ranger was that good but Hobbs made him look a world beater. Too easily turned for the goal and a dodgy presence all game. With Tunchev likely to be fitter in 2 weeks, I think it's time he had a rest.Brown 6 - Had a generally solid game. One cracking cross-field pass in particular. However, his positioning for the goal was laughable, he didn't even attempt to close him down and seemed to be marking thin air, whilst obscuring Weale's view.

Berner 6.5 - Pretty sound

N'Guessan 6.5 - Positive but lacked any sort of final ball.

Oakley 7 - Really set the tempo in the first half. Second half faded but tried to get on the ball.

Wellens 5 - Totally anonymous

Gallagher 5 - One good free kick, one ridiculous free kick. Other than that did anybody notice him?

Howard 7 - Won a lot of headers, but they never seemed to amount to much.

Fryatt 6 - Don't know why everybody is slating him for missing that chance, he largely created it himself with a great turn and it was on his left foot, still 18 yards out. The option to pass was obscured by a covering defender. I'd rather he shot in those situations to be honest. Don't think he touched it in 20 second half minutes, but made many clever runs in the first period.

Subs:

Dyer 3 - Absolutely terrible

Waghorn 5 - Spent his whole game trying to feed the ball through the eye of a needle.

Overall, the first half performance was really good, the second half performance was pathetic.

Totally agree with this comment, I think he froze under pressure a lot of the time, countless occasions he didn't close down and Tunch could possibly be brought in when he is fully fit imo. I was pretty happy with the first half performance but ffs Fryatt pass!!! it was similar to the Scott Sinclair for Wigan.

Weale 6 - Had a fairly comfortable evening, but for their goal, the ball went straight down his throat.

Neilson 5 - Bring back Gilbert. The only thing Neilson has is a throw, and that was shit.

Berner 6 - Got well stuck in and kept to his task well.

Brown 6 - Solid, without doing anything spectacular.

Hobbs 6 - See Brown.

N'Guesshit 5 - Started off well. Trips over the ball too many times, always seems to turn a good opportunity into nothing.

Gallagher 6 - Not a winger, and was rarely in the game, but at least he worked hard.

Oakley 6 - Cracking first half, poor second.

Wellens 7 - Tried getting things going, but not many people were on his wavelength.

Fryatt 5 - PASS. We would've been winning at half time. You know that Steve's gonna win most things, so gamble will you.

Howard 8 - Against a Premiership class defender, Howard was simply immense. Harsh treatment from the shit ref.

Dyer 5 - Guff.

Waghorn 5 - Too easily shackled, but looked promising again.
