Presumably because he has certain skills and plays in such a way that the manager believes he will be beneficial to the team as a whole. After all it's a team game and the sum needs to be greater than the individual parts. A better question might be why is Gerrard out on the left wing at least Heskey's playing in his best position.

Besides when you ask a question that you know no one can realistically answer you should be pleased you even got a response As for Gerrard that's completely different Heskey was playing in his best position where as Gerrard was not and therefore the benefit his presence in the team may have brought was significantly reduced. He hardly needed match practice so there was no reason what so ever to include him.
