StanSP Posted 5 September 2009 Author Posted 5 September 2009 Iceland 1-1 Norway Fantastic result for scotland, they're looking pretty good now. I think, so far, they're the 2nd best runners up so they're in play-offs at the moment. I don't know how it works but it's something to do with taking the points off for the result you got against the bottom side in your group for the 8 larger groups.

Never understood how they work out the playoffs. There are also some groups with more teams than others.
shen Posted 5 September 2009 Posted 5 September 2009 This is brilliant - everything Ronaldo touches turns to shit. I like that smiley! Damn it. Portugal equalize late.... But I guess that was pretty fair, as we were outplayed most of the game. Bendtner scored a stunner and Portugal's Brazilian football import paid of. Oh well, we are still in great position to get to the WC. Not really, they got cheated for the second time now. Busacca had a terrible game, and how I love that luck is on our side this World Cup. Too bad we couldn't hold out, even if it was asking for much!
Bert Posted 5 September 2009 Posted 5 September 2009 The nine European group winners qualify automatically for the finals. The eight best runners-up go into four play-off matches with the winner of each two-legged tie also reaching South Africa.

Im guessing you mean teams who have massed most amount of points as runner up? Also isn't it unfair on the groups with more teams in as they have to play two extra games?
Ultra Posted 5 September 2009 Posted 5 September 2009 The way they balance it out is to take the second-placed team's results against the three highest-placed other teams in the group. Thus only Scotland's results against the Netherlands, Norway and Macedonia would count. As this record already includes three defeats, it doesn't look too good for them. So Wednedsay's game is an absolute must-win, and even then they have to hope results in other groups go their way. But with McFadden banned, I reckon they haven't a cat's chance of beating the Dutch anyway.
Father Ted Posted 6 September 2009 Posted 6 September 2009 Yes . need a last minute goal! How long left? Got the draw Takes a bit of pressure of us now and even if we do lose against France, we would still be top.
BlueSi13 Posted 6 September 2009 Posted 6 September 2009 That bloke doing the scotland anthem is great. Our national anthem is so unbelievably shit. The English national anthem is "Land of Hope and Glory" not "God Save the Queen".....We English have to sing the British national anthem for some reason

That's not me saying that, at the top of the tables bit on the BBC it says it just there. Heart-Shaped Fox Posted 6 September 2009 Posted 6 September 2009 The English national anthem is "Land of Hope and Glory" not "God Save the Queen".....We English have to sing the British national anthem for some reason I thought we technically didnt have a national anthem, but it has been recognised asGod Save the Queen for some reason. Not that I'm bothered.
LCFC-ARAB Posted 6 September 2009 Posted 6 September 2009 Algeria v Zambia tonight actually have a good chance of getting to the world cup for the first time since 1986 would do anything to see Algeria in the world cup and walking around Market Harborough with my Algeria top on! Vive Algerie!
Jordan Posted 6 September 2009 Posted 6 September 2009 Don't know why, but I'd love a Scottish miracle (although it'd be cute to have Northern Ireland, Latvia and Bosnia-Herzegovina in the Finals if that comes at the Scots' expense). - Things are really heating up on my continent--especially since the "sleeping giant" Mexico has awaken. In CONCACAF, the top three teams in the final group qualify for South Africa '10 and the fourth-place team gets a playoff with South America's fifth-place team to qualify. With three games left, the standings look as follow: 1. Honduras 13 +7 2. USA 13 +4 3. Mexico 12 +2 -------------------- 4. Costa Rica 12 -3 -------------------- 5-6 El Salvador/T&T 5 And if the very real chance of a playoff for all the top four teams isn't scary enough (Ecuador's high altutide? Colombia? Uruguay? Hell, even Venezuela...), there's also very real chance Argentina *gasp* could find themselves in fifth... Honduras has a hell of a run-in. They've got Mexico away on Wednesday and then start the final week against the USA in front of what will be a crazy crowd at Tegucigalpa. And while they will have everything at stake in the final game while host El Salvador will be eliminated (barring a miracle), well, umm, there was that whole La guerra del fútbol thing a while back. No excuses for the United States to not get three points at T&T on Wednesday. Three huge points should be motivation enough, but an away game at Honduras and a home game against Costa Rica almost puts a gun to their backs.

It's good to see that the CONCACAF is heating up for once. Surprised to see Honduras doing so well, so hats off to them. Would be an excellent encounter against the Southamerican 5th if Mexico finished in 4th place.
Darkzzz_ Posted 6 September 2009 Posted 6 September 2009 Spain were spectacular last night whilst Italy disappointed me. Lippi is insisting that the old guard is still the way, it clearly isn't, the amount of young talent he has at his disposal is scary. Just watched the France highlights, nothing special there, considered a real long shot by a few bookmakers for next years world cup.

Struggle through groups, and then out in quarters.
Samilktray Posted 6 September 2009 Posted 6 September 2009 The England game was boring as fuck. Michael Carrick annoys me, hes awful for England, does nothing.

Most people on this forum do too. But don't you get bored watching it hour after hour?
StanSP Posted 6 September 2009 Author Posted 6 September 2009 I think Argentina will still get through. Probably sneak into 4th place. Still 3 games to go. Their next fixture will be tougher than against Brazil. Argentina vs Paraguay. It's a must win for Argentina. If they don't win, they jus thave to hope that Colombia don't beat Uruguay and Bolivia beat Ecuador. Brazil play Chile also in the next round of Quals. Sparky Posted 6 September 2009 Posted 6 September 2009 I'd love it if Argentina didnt qualify. Whilst id allow myself a little chuckle it would be criminal not to see Messi at SA 2010
dandannieldanok Posted 6 September 2009 Posted 6 September 2009 Koumas I was just about to come on here and say he won't be missed, but after reading the BBC article and seeing he's got 10 goals in 34 appearances, then maybe I'm wrong.
Sparky Posted 6 September 2009 Posted 6 September 2009 Koumas Like you have said previously Wales do have some decent players to pick from in the centre of midfield , time for Ramsay and Collison to step up. Talking of international retirements , Sol Campbell aint in the mood http://www.skysports.com/story/0,19528,11095_5540744,00.html
