GLC Posted 1 October 2009 Posted 1 October 2009 When we signed him at the start of the season i was a bit unsure about him, i would have prefered David Stockdale or someone else. i was wrong, he is such a good keeper, reliable and his reaction saves are amazing, ever since Ian Walker we have had sh*t keepers, it's nice to know we have a good one now What do you think?
Guest Posted 1 October 2009 Posted 1 October 2009 After Wellens he's been our best signing of the summer IMO. Quality
Fatbloke Posted 1 October 2009 Posted 1 October 2009 Martinfulop would be one word, Weale is a very decent keeper I just wish he`d throw the ball a bit more, the times he goes to throw and changes his mind, it`s bluddy anoying !
acooling08 Posted 1 October 2009 Posted 1 October 2009 He is a very good shot-stopper but I'd like to see him commanding his area more, although he has improved that lately so yeah, great signing.

Agreed, his shot-stopping has been almost faultless but he looks a little indecisive at times with crosses and marginal decisions. Has been an astute signing though, can't really complain.
Heart-Shaped Fox Posted 1 October 2009 Posted 1 October 2009 So far so good for Weale. Could be seen as an excellent signing if he keeps this form up
StanSP Posted 1 October 2009 Posted 1 October 2009 Martinfulop would be one word, Weale is a very decent keeper I just wish he`d throw the ball a bit more, the times he goes to throw and changes his mind, it`s bluddy anoying ! This is a minor aspect of his game. THe important factors of his game are the ones that matter i.e. shot-stopping and commanding his area/defence.
Fox92 Posted 1 October 2009 Posted 1 October 2009 I was also unsure about a few signings this season, with Weale being one of them. However, he has grown in confidence and I do have confidence in him. A few things I could pick up on, thought he dived late when Mellor scored, he could throw it out abit more when the full backs (on few occasions) ask for the ball - but then that has to be the management to ensure that he throws the ball to the full backs. Think that he sometimes doesn't cummunicate as much as he should do to the defence though. I'd like to see the ball thrown to the full backs more though, and then play real football instead of playing the long ball to Howard (or 'x', whoever it is up there). Be like watching Arsenal or Nottingham Forest when Clough was there To be honest, he is a decent keeper. Would have loved David Stockdale or David Martin but Weale is way better than the likes of Paul Henderson, Conrad Logan and Kevin Pressman etc who we have had to put up for since Ian Walkers move to Bolton a few years ago now.

Practically every goalkeeper we've had in recent years starts off throwing it a lot but then gradually does it less and less -it's something that annoys me and that's how I've noticed it.

I'm still undecided about Weale, to be honest. His shot-stopping is OK, and apart from the serious row he seemed to have with Wayne Brown during the first half of the Peterborough game I've been happy enough with his communication. That row with Brown seemed to result almost immediately in Brown head-butting our own post and going off at half-time. And WB followed it up with below average performances in the next couple of games. Now I think it through I wonder if either the knocks Brown took against Peterborough, or the serious tactical disagreement which seemed to develop between him and Weale, knocked his confidence somewhat. But Weale seems to have all but given up on any outlet other than hoofing to Steve Howard - even if Howard's not on the pitch that still seems to be the first and only option. I'm open-minded as to whether this is Weale's fault though, as there often aren't many defenders / midfielders making themselves available. It's like everyone knows the plan is going to be route one, so they don't bother providing any alternatives. Or he's got so used to them not moving much off the ball that he doesn't bother to look for it, and just goes route one without thinking. Couple that with our tendency to go back to Weale a little too much when we can't find a pass in midfield, and you make it very difficult to play flowing football. I hope this is one aspect of what Pearson is talking about when he says we could do better...
Matt Posted 1 October 2009 Posted 1 October 2009 Gotta say I wasn't inspired or excited by him being our first signing of the summer, having said that I was willing to wait and see how he performed as I had heard and saw nothing from him, and i'm glad to say i've been impressed!
Fox92 Posted 24 February 2010 Posted 24 February 2010 I was unsure about Weale at first (as everyone knows), ecspecially after the West Brom match, but he is growing on me now. A few decent performances from his, a few good saves in yesterdays match at Doncaster Rovers and in the previous matches as well, and I am starting to like him. His kicking is poor at times, but I suppose thats poor management to ensure that the full backs come short for the ball, other than that, yes, he's alright. England's number one is a bit to far though...
Cobbo Posted 24 February 2010 Posted 24 February 2010 The Weale deal. I'll get me coat. In all seriousness, I thought we'd snapped him up on a free as our number 2 keeper (afterall, he could not get into Bristol City's side) then we didn't sign anyone & he was given the number 1 jersey. Well, he has been absolutely superb & a fantastic signing by Pearson & his scouts. I personally think his distribution is cracking, he is not helped when no Howard or Yann are on the pitch so has to kick out wide to Dany or Gallagher, giving rise to a few going out for throws. His handling is fabulous, claims some unbeliveable crosses and then his shot stopping is good too. Impressed me last night when there was a shot into the corner, fairly tame, but he didn't try to hold it, just made sure that the ball went our wide away from danger as the ball was incredibly slippy due to the snow. Signing of the summer for me, along with the Wag.

Probably player of the year, although he does need to be alot more vocal and his distribution needs to improve!!

The constant trend Mike Stowell.... Anyways, Weale is a confidence keeper. Goes through good spells, then average spells and then good. That said you won't find many better in the division, he's not dodgy and he was a freebie!
Katy Posted 24 February 2010 Posted 24 February 2010 I love Weale but his kicking last night was outrageous. Maybe it was the weather but I've noticed this for a while, it was just more noticeable last night. Having said all that, he's kept us in so many games this season and he's the best 'keeper we've had for a while in my opinion.
Cobbo Posted 24 February 2010 Posted 24 February 2010 As has been said, his kicking was going out wide purely to find the head of Gallagher and before that N'Guessan. Very small margin for error. When you just have Waghorn through the middle against 2 ventre halves, it has to go wide most of the time. And then he did get the assist for the goal with a kick of his, did he not?
StanSP Posted 24 February 2010 Posted 24 February 2010 Yeah but he keeps pulling his hand away!! Waiting for that one to creep in!
Babylon Posted 24 February 2010 Posted 24 February 2010 Waiting for that one to creep in! I couldn't help myself

So he kicked the ball out of play a few times, hardly a crime worthy of the jebend ironic cheers he received. He's clearly been instructed to look to the wing everytime and I'd rather he overhit it than underhit it and allow their midfield to pounce on it.

If the ball is hit right, it allows us to gain some territory by getting a throw, or by one of our players picking up the second ball away from the centre of the pitch. As Cobbo said, if Weale had opted to hit kicks straight down the centre then Waghorn's got little chance against two defenders. The opposition get the ball and go again.
