davieG Posted 18 December 2009 Posted 18 December 2009 Nigel Pearson has warned he may have to sell before he can buy during the January transfer window. The Leicester City boss said there wouldn't be a lot of money to spend and he may have to generate cash through player sales to enable him to recruit. He said that he could not speculate on whether that would involve fringe squad players or one of his prize assets, but insisted any deal would be for the benefit of the club. Pearson confirmed yesterday that Yann Kermorgant had agreed to sign a new two-and-a-half-year contract to keep him at the club until the summer of 2012, but he warned there may not be as many new faces arriving in January as some fans may expect. "In terms of the window, it is very easy for people to get carried away and think that there will be lots of activity," he said. TIN.adverts.adWriteDC('article-detail-impact-tile', '452x118'); "There are two criteria as far as I am concerned and the first is whether we can afford to do anything. Like any other club, we are not exactly flush with money and it may be we will have to wheel and deal to get players in if we can. "The only reason I would get players in would be if they were better than the players we have got. "It very rarely happens that the players you target are the ones you can bring in, so we may well have to move one or two out to get anyone in. There is a lot that can happen between now and January. "People look at it in terms of spending on players, but what you have to remember during these pretty tough times is the chairman has put a lot of money into this club to keep it afloat, let me assure you. "We have to be realistic and if we are going to do any business it will be judged to be right for what we can do. "But I am not ruling out the fact that I might have to lose one or two to get one or two in. That is the reality of football, I am afraid. We are in no different position than anyone else. "It will be based on what business needs to be done. I can't speculate more at this time. "I want to keep this squad together but, ultimately, if we can do business, it might be, and I am not saying that is definitely the case, we will need to sell. It will depend on the criteria. "I am not in a hurry to make people who are already here feel insecure. "There are always going to be casualties along the way. "Any decisions that are made will be right for the club."
davieG Posted 18 December 2009 Author Posted 18 December 2009 Driving the price down for potential purchases or softening up the fans for Gradel's departure. It's not like the club are renowned for communication of this type.
Guest Bilo Posted 18 December 2009 Posted 18 December 2009 DJ Campbell. Derby. Permanent. It's gonna happen.
ozleicester Posted 18 December 2009 Posted 18 December 2009 no new players! Fryatt sold! No playoffs!
Corky Posted 18 December 2009 Posted 18 December 2009 Can't see him selling first-team regulars, most likely to be the loan players (Dickov, Campbell, Gradel). Not surprising that we haven't got much money to spend.
Matt Posted 18 December 2009 Posted 18 December 2009 TBH Dickov, Campbell and Gradel would free up quite abit of money, I'd imagine Dickov is on a tidy penny, We all know Campbell is the best payed player or one off, and i'd guess we could as for a fair bit for Gradel. Not sure if it would free up enough money but it would free up a fair bit.
Ford Super Sunday Posted 18 December 2009 Posted 18 December 2009 DJ Campbell. Derby. Permanent. It's gonna happen. As much as I would love that, Im sure the greedy little pub player will be quite happy to sit on £20k a week for the rest of the season, rather than take a pay cut. Whatever decisions Nigel makes regarding selling before buying are the right ones. He knows best. Him and Shakespeare, the next Clough and Taylor (Only because I watched The Damned United last night)
Ric Flair Posted 18 December 2009 Posted 18 December 2009 Wasn't it Mandaric who said that if we were well in the hunt for promotion come January that he'd wedge us up? Either old red wine moustache has been pulling our plonker or Pearson is just trying to knock clubs off the scent who think they can make a few quid off us if we go dipping.

The club will need Dickov & Campbell to go due to the wages they are on, Gradel will not be on the wedge that they are on, also he has a much longer future ahead of him so I hope he will not go.
MPH Posted 18 December 2009 Posted 18 December 2009 he is inviting offers for fryatt. DJ, Dickov, and Gradel are open to offers too.
Guest Bilo Posted 18 December 2009 Posted 18 December 2009 Whatever decisions Nigel makes regarding selling before buying are the right ones. He knows best. Him and Shakespeare, the next Clough and Taylor (Only because I watched The Damned United last night) He will make the right decisions, which is why I'd be stunned to see him sell Fryatt, not least because it would be daft of Fryatt to go anywhere else in the Championship. As for Pearson and Shakey being the next Clough and Taylor, yes. Yes please.
MC Prussian Posted 18 December 2009 Posted 18 December 2009 There's only one more chance to cash in on Dickov with the January transfer, as he'll be on a free at the end of this season. Won't be much, but as long as Derby are willing to pay for his services, the more the better. At least it'd be a start. Campbell - yes, please. But I'm not sure whether Derby County themselves have that much money to spend at this point. Would be nice, though. Gradel and Fryatt we need to keep. At all costs. I know it sounds little bit exaggerated, but they're the future of this club. Players with such talent and/or goalscoring prowess are hard to come by these days. I'd rather see guys like Brown or even Neilson put on the transfer list, as they've both shown to be too erratic in this campaign. Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying they're bad players, but they haven't been able to step up as desired. Also, what's the news with the Clemence situation?
Fox92 Posted 18 December 2009 Posted 18 December 2009 Dickov and Campbell to go perminant? Not sure if he'll say Gradel, but if Grayson put in a good offer, why not? Weselowski? May not get a lot but I can't see him playing again. Who else is there?
Babylon Posted 18 December 2009 Posted 18 December 2009 No surprise there, he had already said as much several weeks ago. Nobody seemed to have read the article though judging by the "who to buy in January" thread. You only have to look around the league at other teams our size in financial trouble to see that money will be very tight.
Leicesterboi Posted 18 December 2009 Posted 18 December 2009 Derby have paid silly wages in their time. Its common knowledge they are trying to shift Luke Varney to Sheff Weds, as he is on around £17k a week. He is the joint top paid player along with Rob Hulse. If they can free that up, hopefully they can afford DJ. I would take Varney here to be fair, on cut wages though!

Rumour has it he wants to buy Rob Hulse for £2.5M according to Sky Sports!
Hitesh Posted 18 December 2009 Posted 18 December 2009 Yeah, I'm hoping it will be just selling the likes of Campbell and Dickov (and possibly Wesso??) which would def free up some wages/money! Then possibly Gradel but I don't think Pearson is that keen on it. And I can't see him selling Fryatt at all even if we do get an offer. Milan wouldn't be that stupid surely - he can't expect promotion if we sell our top goal scorer!
hairy Posted 18 December 2009 Posted 18 December 2009 Milan did state that he would add money if we were in the running for promotion so whats going on?
Kilworthfox Posted 18 December 2009 Posted 18 December 2009 Milan did state that he would add money if we were in the running for promotion so whats going on? He was lying, he never thought we would be in 5th & talk is cheap!
Vlad The Impaler Posted 18 December 2009 Posted 18 December 2009 Hmm, I wouldn't read too much into it. Just think Nige is making an excuse to sell Gradel as a lot of fans like him. Campbell will go aswell. The only big name player I could see leaving is Howard.
Sir Fynwy Posted 18 December 2009 Posted 18 December 2009 He was lying, he never thought we would be in 5th & talk is cheap! Milan is as surprised as anyone that we are in the play off places and his bluff is being called, he has very little ready cash to put into the club (even if he wanted to).
FoxesFan123 Posted 18 December 2009 Posted 18 December 2009 There are loads of players which could leave to free up some cash: Logan Worley Weso Clem Chambers Porter Dickov Campbell Sappleton Verma? Astrit? Some of them probably wouldn't even bring in a fee, but the wages would help.

But you have to find a team that is willing to take them at the wages we are paying, some of these are going nowhere until their contracts end.
haraven Posted 18 December 2009 Posted 18 December 2009 This is not surprising. This is great tactics from NP and Milan, this time they actually go out and tell us, the fans, we can't expect miracles. The level-headed ones of us knew that there wouldn't be millions to splash about, but there is a chance that MM sees this as an opportunity to go for PL and look for a new potential buyer. He is a clever businessman after all, let's not be fooled about that. Telling other teams, agents and whatnot we have millions to spend is idiocy. None of you fans would go into a flat screen store and say you got all the money in the world, price is no problem ... well, reading a few posts, maybe a couple of the fans would, but that is another matter. What I am trying to say, this shouldn't come as a troll-in-a-box to anyone, we have a lot of fringe players we could sell and rather go for 1-2 new ones that lift the team, and then build up from youth level to get more fringe players. That is the economic climate at the moment. I doubt very much we will sell our regular best players, if we do, it will only be for a good price. We basically use the same 15-16 players every match - benchwarmers included.

Milan is as surprised as anyone that we are in the play off places and his bluff is being called, he has very little ready cash to put into the club (even if he wanted to). People keep saying he has little cash, lost a lot in the recession etc. but how do people know this? Are you his accountants or are you related to him? Can't seem to find anything to back these claims up tbh.
