Dan Posted 9 March 2010 Author Posted 9 March 2010 Rivalries are IMO all about location, the amount of games your club has played against the teams (I.E Divisions), Run ins with opposition fans = this can be at work, down the pub, family etc... Also Which in my opinion makes Coventry the most logical rival of the three, when we have played them more than the last two in the last twenty years, and are also the most local. Is it? Definitely. Even the likes of Blackpool, Rochdale and Peterborough have main rivals. Leicester and Coventry are about the only sides in the Midlands without any proper rivalry, it feels small time. This thread makes me cringe. Lovely, btw, I'm not bothered. Why all the hate? Why can't we all just get along? After all, I don't hate people who work at a rival company to me. They are only a rival because they sell a similar product or service. Hell, if I was with a Cov fan now, I would give them a hug and a tickle and tell them everything is going to be alright Hate in football is actually so much more enjoyable than like, not saying I'd dislike someone just for supporting Cov / Derby / Forest etc... but its so much more enjoyable beating the likes of Leeds and Millwall, disliked clubs than beating the likes of Preston and Barnsley when a lot of sides couldn't really give a monkeys about them, even though they are better sides.
Maybes Posted 9 March 2010 Posted 9 March 2010 Daniel why dont you just hate/dislike/love who you want?
Dan Posted 9 March 2010 Author Posted 9 March 2010 Daniel why dont you just hate/dislike/love who you want? I do. I just think theres a potential big rivalry sitting on our doorstep, seems a waste in a way. Can see what people are saying though, we'd need to play out some historic games that would build up some tention, say if we got them in the playoff final etc...
Nick Posted 9 March 2010 Posted 9 March 2010 I do. I just think theres a potential big rivalry sitting on our doorstep, seems a waste in a way. Can see what people are saying though, we'd need to play out some historic games that would build up some tention, say if we got them in the playoff final etc... Hey Dan, without intending to be rude mate, what sort of tension and rivalry are you looking for? Can you explain the benefits of hating/having tensions, with Coventry and what would those tensions look like socially? I'm confused as to what you would like the end product of hate to look like.
jonthefox Posted 9 March 2010 Posted 9 March 2010 As a footnote, i`d just like to point out that, after trawling many football forums coventry seem to have more derogatory names for us than any other team i can think of. so yeah, feck um. Bring on the `m69 derby`.
iancognito Posted 9 March 2010 Posted 9 March 2010 I used to 'hate' all 3 equally when I was younger but for different reasons. Forest were the marginally bigger club who got the headlines because they played pretty football despite winning fook all of any note in 30 years. Derby were more on our level ability & fanbase-wise, we swapped one or two players and then beat them in the PO Final which re-built a rivalry that had tailed off. Coventry I had a problem with but only because they came up here with thousands of the most obnoxious, acne-ridden virgins you've ever seen intent on having a scrap that no-one was really up for. I'd never really noticed them as a local rival before that but they just seemed really proud of being a mid-Prem club who occasionally ticked the feet of relegation. It says a lot about Coventry that they preserved their bombed out wreck of a Cathedral - despite building a new one next door - as a monument of how the Germans flattened their city. As a club and a town there's just nothing to like about them and it'd be nice if they could go back to abusing "Shit On The" Villa and leaving us alone. I'm more bothered about Peterborough or even Birmingham these days than I am them. The M69 derby is just a very poor description of a rivalry that for three quarters of our fans doesn't exist.
Ultra Posted 10 March 2010 Posted 10 March 2010 Villa, Birmingham and even West Brom are all nearer to Cov than we are. Fans of those clubs don't appear to give a flying one about them. Why should we?
MC Prussian Posted 10 March 2010 Posted 10 March 2010 Instead of wasting energy on some local rivals, I'd rather have us celebrate Leicester City's achievements this season - hey, we just got promoted last May!
MPH Posted 10 March 2010 Posted 10 March 2010 they have won 5 of their last 6 but for them to get into the play offs AND STAY THERE will take a run of epic proportions. All good runs come to an end and theirs will soon too. They'll probably only win a couple more games this season and will fade into mid table obscurity as per usual for Coventry.. bless their litttle hearts for getting all excited..
Darkzzz_ Posted 10 March 2010 Posted 10 March 2010 I dislike the city, the majority of folk in the city and I dislike John Gaunt (sometimes I find myself agreeing with him though) so yeah I guess I really dislike that football team they have.
Rich Fox Posted 10 March 2010 Posted 10 March 2010 Villa, Birmingham and even West Brom are all nearer to Cov than we are. Fans of those clubs don't appear to give a flying one about them. Why should we? No way we are closer to cov than West Brom for sure and even Villa and Brum I think or the same surely? we dont all live north of Leicester and we ave rivalry with cov. I thought the atmosphere against notts forest was poor until the last 20 minutes and would have been loud with 3 goals against anyone.

He said they are closer than us and that they don't even care about Coventry. If you can be bothered to see who is closer than who in terms of Championship stadiums, use this: http://www.myfootygrounds.co.uk/LeagueMap.asp?League=CHAMP
Karljohn Posted 10 March 2010 Posted 10 March 2010 Always hated them, from the day this kid at school said Cov was a bigger city than Leicester...! Deluded bunch, from the bloke who unfurled the "we'll be back" banner at Villa Park when they got relegated years ago through to the few that live near me harping on about the play offs and how they are going to Wembley. They talk about the 87 Cup final win, I remind them about Sutton United in 1989. Fortunate that there are more Leicester fans in Atherstone than Cov, we have a "ricoh bus" that starts at the bus station here on matchdays and its a source of amusement for me each time I see coming out or in with zero passengers on it. As for the City itself, awful, even the rats have buggered off.

Dont know many cov fans in Atherstone either, that ricoh bus is cheap as chips and your right its always empty, maybe we should hijack it and drive it to the walkers.
Samilktray Posted 10 March 2010 Posted 10 March 2010 Atherstone seems to be full of Villa fans. And you can just decide to hate someone or something, thats a bit silly.
Tommeh Posted 10 March 2010 Posted 10 March 2010 I reckon Cov's probably the only ground I wouldn't visit for a semi final play-off game. Seriously the worst gaff in the Football league.
Sampson Posted 11 March 2010 Posted 11 March 2010 I'm surprised people are saying that they dislike Forest and Derby because they endlessly spout about their achievements and not Coventry. Almost every Coventry fan I've ever known has endlessly told tales of the 87 cup final and that is nowhere the same achievement as what Forest and Derby achieved under Clough. I am a Coventry lad, so I've always had a dislike for them since they were lower league non-entities before Jimmy Hill took over and I can still never forgive them for that 68/69 relegation season. I have no idea how any Leicester fan who lived through Clough could have anything but respect for both Forest and Derby. What Clough achieved with them was amazing and they played such brilliant football as well. I would still rate John Robertson in the top 10 best players I have ever seen live. In days when Revie's dour Leeds side dominated the game, Clough (and Shankly) were a breath of fresh air. I have the up most respect for both sides. Whereas Jimmy Hill on the other hand was was one of the most dislikible people in football.
Sampson Posted 11 March 2010 Posted 11 March 2010 Portsmouth = Back when we were both looking to get promoted in 2003 a rivalry grew The rivalry with Portsmouth is much, much older than 2003. Goes back to the 1940's I believe and had always been there as an under current but was really ignited during the 1991 play-off semi finals with some nasty pieces of violence from the Portsmouth fans and racist chanting.
Sampson Posted 11 March 2010 Posted 11 March 2010 Also, surprised people are using the atmosphere at the Ricoh this season as a measurement. The atmosphere away at Forest was just as bad, even at the start when we were still 0-0. The atmosphere at home to Derby this season was worse than either. Besides, these things do change over time, up until maybe even 15 years a go, the rivalry with Derby was only minor. It was only really after the play-off final and Iwan's and Marshall's hat-trick that it really took off.
Alexikokopops Posted 11 March 2010 Posted 11 March 2010 Villa, Birmingham and even West Brom are all nearer to Cov than we are. Fans of those clubs don't appear to give a flying one about them. Why should we? Interesting theory, but it falls short on a number of points: 1) According to this website (using the Walker's Stadium postcode of LE2 7FL and the Ricoh Arena postcode of CV6 6GE), Leicester are 19.17 miles from Cov, while West Brom are 20.14 miles. 2) Those clubs all have four clubs that are closer to them than Coventry. All have each other, Wolves and Walsall closer to them, hence the lack of rivalry with Coventry. Our closest club is, in fact, Coventry. Next are Forest, then Notts County, then Derby. It's not just about the proximity, but if you do try and use that as an argument then it doesn't really work. Actually, come to think of it, don't Cov hate Villa, but Villa don't really care because they're more concerned about Birmingham? Sounds pretty similar to us hating Forest/Derby, but them not being concerned because they're more preoccupied with each other if you ask me. Cov would be our obvious rival, but some people hate them and some don't, and you force a rivalry. Personally, I think they're scummers, mainly from living there for four years.
Dr The Singh Posted 11 March 2010 Posted 11 March 2010 There all foooking cooonts, it just easier to hate everyone and see every foooking team as your rivals!!!
Corky Posted 11 March 2010 Posted 11 March 2010 There all foooking cooonts, it just easier to hate everyone and see every foooking team as your rivals!!! Yes
The Blur Posted 11 March 2010 Posted 11 March 2010 I think the majority of the hatred is down to the personal issues, I don't get jealous about their past glories because I'm proud of our club's achievements and history. I hate Derby most of all because this stem from my best mate's support for them and we used to have fantastic banters about them however his conviction that they are better than us irk me a lot. I had other mate who support Forest however he is not a die hard fan as my derby loving mate hereby my hatred for them is less than my hatred for Derby until last two weeks when couple of forest inbreds post on here inflaming my new found hatred for them So it is all down to personal issues for me and I have no one to annoy me who incidentally is a Coventry fan
