Beckham

There is no doubt Beckham would have gone to the World Cup. Capello is no fool, and he knows the importance of influencial senior players to clam the nerves and keep things together in the big competitions. I am hopeful that they can work out a way for him to be there and around the squad in South Africa.

Gutted for him, he deserves better. Got a boot in the face as well which hardly helped matters.

Don't think it's the end of the world for England though. Off the field I'd like him to still be there as a mentor type figure but on the pitch I think we have adequate cover.

Devastating for Becks.

Blow to England not to have him in the dressing room guiding the young'uns.

As for the actual team that plays it's a good thing. Ashley Young may get in the squad now.

Sad news for Beckham and I bet he is gutted. It won't affect the team to much i don't think as he would only have been an impact player. Hope Milner is given a bigger chance now.

One less issue to worry about for Mr Capello then.

Never going to be a starter but might have been handy for expeirence or just incase one of our younger/pacet wingers failed to deliver the goods expected.

I know there is some debate over Beckham because of the PR cirucs that follows him and I am sure he loves the attention but personally though whilst not always playing that well gave his all for England.

A chance for somebody else to become the next England hero...

Lets just hope Mr Rooney stays injury-free!!!!

I'm glad that the press can now shut up about Beckham going to the WC but it will put more press pressure on other players (probably Rooney) which may be to their detriment, the Becks circus allows other players to get on with being footballers without all the media focus.

My thoughts exactly. But with both Beckham and Owen out of the reckoning, the press will just focus on the next in line. Joe Cole seems to be getting their attention a lot recently...

I feel the "circus" has moved onto John Terry and Ashley Cole..and their lifestyles.

Gutted for him, actually felt really bad last night when I found it. He definately deserved to be there.

I guess he'll still travel out there for the World Cup and be around the camp, probably end up doing a bit of TV work as well.

Rubbish. Ashley Young has been pretty average this season - if he had a chance of making the squad, he'd have been in it by now.

Your point about experience is a good one though. I actually think this opens the door for somebody else. Everybody's favourite - Gary Neville! Experienced, will be a good influence in the dressing room, still a terrific crosser and a competent defender.

Devastating blow for Beckham. He'd worked really hard in recent months to convince Capello he should be part of the squad.

He had a decent half-hour at Old Trafford in midweek. Even I was looking forward to seeing him as a potential impact player at the World Cup.

But at least we won't have to worry about the circus of WAGS this time around..

I didn't know Beckham was married to more than one of them.

Puts it to bed at least, it's not exactly crushed me to be honest. I actually think it might work in our favour to be honest, hopefully this way Adam Johnson will be on that plane now.

Feel sorry for him as the whole Inter loan thing was to make a shout for the England team. All that trouble it caused last summer too with LA.

I'm pretty confident Beckham is on loan to AC not Inter. :D

Anyways, I hope Beckham does go with the squad as a mentor or someone who can help the younger lads out who havent been to a World Cup and help them cope with the pressure, didn't Craig Brown do the same with Gary Mac at France '98?

well I heard quotes saying he wanted to stay but would go back without complaint if Galaxy refused, TBH I think its only until July when someone here will buy him from the MLS.

He said he would stay if the strike was still going on and the initial games weren't going ahead as planned, and if Galaxy were ok with that.

Thats right.

I find it odd that people still want beckham to go to the World cup despite his injury. I don't really get the wiole 'Mentor' thing. These are grown men who play for the top teams in europe and have played all around the world in big games in front of massive crowds. How would Mr beckham help them? Plus the whole media circus that surrounds the team when beckham is about can only ham the team IMHO.

It might take the media circus with Beckham rather than team which could be beneficial?

Sad news for Beckham (although he could still make a World Cup at 38, I can imagine he wouldn't rule himself out for an England call up, ever) and sad news for England in my mind. Say what you like about Lennon, Wright Phillips, Young, Milner or Walcott who can all play right wing, I wouldn't be confident of them consistantly putting a performance in like Beckham did for England.

Let's just hope this is the last of the bad injury news (with Owen being unavailable a disapointment for me, even if he wasn't in Capello's plans) because I still fear a Rooney injury.

But the numbers would increase so much it would be of no benefit at all. I really can't see any advantage in taking him.
