The Berner Situation

Damn, It appears Berner wants the impossible - first team assurances else he still wants to leave

http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/teams/l/leicester_city/9338176.stm

"It's an unchanged situation. Nothing's changed," he told BBC Radio Leicester.

"I have still not sorted my future. I put in a good performance but already a few Championship clubs have called my agent so there are teams knocking on the door."

I don't think anyone should be given first team assurances but its obvious that new signings receive them, so I'm not sure how I feel about it. I like him and was shocked when he was replaced as IMO there were weaker players

Although I also understand an international at his age doesn't want to be out of a first team

Berner and Morrison will still go because Sven thinks he can bring better in to replace them. I wish they would both stay, why change something that works its proved that over the last two games. But were not the manager and i wish them both all the best if they wish to move on and get first team football.

I don't think new signings get first team assurances .... but the inference is; Why would i be signing you if you weren't better than what i have!!!

I think if Berner is confident of his ability then he would stay and fight for his place ..... equally i can understand his frustration at falling out of favour when a new manager arrives.

It's just football and I think he's a pragmatic and experienced pro that realises that. Comes across as a nice guy and I'd like him to stay though... but he's no massive loss to the side so I'd wish him well if he left.....

He's been offered a new contract and has decided up to this point not to sign it as he is entitled to do. He played well on Monday but earlier in the season he wasn't fit and didn't play that well and was exposed quite often for a lack of pace. Cunningham was playing well and offered a much more dynamic attacking option. I realise you don't have much time for Sven but he has generally tried to bring in better quality players. Some have worked better than others but that is always the case. No manager has a 100% record in transfers.

No player should receive first team assurances and I don't believe any have been given, though of course if you don't play your loan signings you're not going to find out if they are any good are you?

If Berner wants such assurances then as far as I'm concerned he can leave. Players should be judged on their current merit not on their past or the love fans have for them. If we can do better than anyone is replaceable. Sven has said he wants him to stay so it is up to Berner to decide if he wants to stay and compete for a place alongside every other player or he can leave and go with the good wishes of most city fans.

There were indeed weaker players and some have already been sidelined but he was hardly brilliant earlier in the season.

I have plenty of time for Sven... my sole point about Sven was why didn't he change things when we could all see Kirkland was unfit & utter shit. and secondly he persisted with Davies when he didn't want to play for us both of those players could have been dropped. I was disappointed that Sven didn't pro-actively change things and instead waited until Kirkland was even more injured and Davies walked out on us. But that matter is done now, but please don't infer how I feel about someone unless I have said the words myself.

I think earlier in the season a lot of players were less than brilliant which is why were in the bottom 3, a good coaching team and an organised manger has sorted that situation out.

yes, if someone wants assurances, they should go - shame as he obviously could have a key part to play

he's bust his ass and had a good game, bound to as in the shop window or fighting for his place.

@ 33with ltd ability and fitness he can't pick and choose and won't get a bigger club than us

Let him go, can't hold a gun to the clubs head

will be loosing out on a great player in my opinion. 1. great role model for the youngsters. 2. brings experience, 3. gives his best in most games 4. consistant

was far better than cunningham! Sven fooked up here

the last thing we need is more instabililty in defence!

he could of even stayed and then become a coach later on in his career

gonna be hard to replace

would not be gutted if he went, getting on a bit and i think we have better players to put in his position

Who for instance?

IMO we should try to keep Bruno & Morrison, both good Championship players. The defence has been 100% better since they started in the team again.

hes not trying to hold a gun to the clubs head or look for a bigger club.. he just wants to play football...

he got offered a contract but turned it down.. he could have quite easy signed the contract and got paid for being on the bench/ doing nothing etc..

Leicester City defender Bruno Berner says two Championship clubs are chasing his signature.

The Switzerland international says his future could be resolved before Sunday's FA Cup third-round tie with Manchester City at the Walkers Stadium.

The Mercury exclusively revealed last month that Berner wanted to leave during the January transfer window after becoming disillusioned by his lack of first-team opportunities this season.

Manager Sven-Goran Eriksson said on Monday that he wanted the 33-year-old left-back to have a change of heart, but Berner says his situation remains the same.

Berner said: "In a way, the last few days have been exciting. Two Championship clubs are knocking on the door already as they are aware of my situation.

"I have to see what Leicester are going to do now and it will be very interesting."

Berner is refusing to sign a new one-year contract and said: "My situation is unchanged as my future is still not sorted out and I am in my final year. It's Sven's call now."

Berner made his first start in 13 games against Swansea on Monday following the broken leg suffered by Greg Cunningham in last weekend's win at Hull.

He received a terrific reception from the home crowd and scored in the 2-1 success.

But he said: "We have lost a very good, young full-back in Greg and I feel for him with his injury, but when Sven signed him and Kyle Naughton he sent out the message that he wants a team of young full-backs.

"I can see what he is doing and I would probably do the same if I was the manager because he is looking to the future and I am not getting any younger.

"I don't know what is going to happen in the next few days but it is down to Leicester now. My goal is to sort out my future."

Berner said he would never allow the uncertainty of his future to affect his performances.

"I was ready when needed against Swansea and the reception I had from the fans was great," he said.

"I was pleased to score. I have done it a few times for Leicester but my main priority is to play games."

Berner described the victory over Swansea, who were second in the table ahead of the contest, as "a massive win."

He added: "Our target was to get in the play-off shake-up by January and we are doing that.

"We have also achieved back-to-back wins which helps us."

Bruno is my favourite player.

However, he lacks pace and Sven likes pace throughout his teams.

If we are to progress and get out of this league, we need to try and buy the next level up, and in fairness to Sven, Cunningham was a level up from Bruno.

I think he realises what Svens criteria is, hence him wanting to leave.

Good lad though, his charchter will be missed.
