The Padster Posted 7 May 2011 Posted 7 May 2011 Town Targeting Coventry Keeper WestwoodFri 06th May 2011 22:25 Town are understood to be close to landing out-of-contract Coventry keeper Keiren Westwood. The Republic of Ireland international was previously targeted by the Blues when a Carlisle player in the summer of 2008 before joining the Sky Blues for £750,000. <br clear="all"> Westwood, 6ft 2in tall, started his career with hometown club Manchester City – coincidentally at the same time as Brian Murphy - but failed to make a senior appearance while at the Eastlands-based club or during a 2003/04 loan spell at Oldham. The following summer he joined Carlisle where he spent four seasons and made the League One PFA team in his final year before making his move to Coventry. The 26-year-old has won seven full caps with Ireland, for whom he qualifies via his grandmother, but has been withdrawn from the three internationals at the end of the season due to a shoulder injury. Speaking on Thursday, Blues boss Paul Jewell said he is close to making his first signing of the summer: "We are very hopeful of maybe completing a deal next week." Town have offered new terms to out of contract keepers Arran Lee-Barrett and Brian Murphy, while Márton Fülöp only has one more year left on his deal and the Blues could look to cash in on the Hungarian international this summer. Saturday's opponents Leicester, Leeds, Wigan, Everton, Wolves, Newcastle and Celtic have all also been linked with Westwood. Meanwhile, former Blue James Scowcroft has tweeted suggesting that Crystal Palace could be the club which skipper David Norris will join this summer. The Eagles made an unsuccessful £800,000 joint bid for Norris and defender Damien Delaney in January. Wigan, Nottingham Forest, Leeds and Portsmouth are all also believed to be interested in the former Plymouth man, who is understood to be leaving Town having been offered a two-year deal by the Blues and not the three-season contract he wants. sdb Posted 7 May 2011 Posted 7 May 2011 hmmmm, come on Sven we should be able to offer whatever they are
Cropwellfox Posted 7 May 2011 Posted 7 May 2011 Fulop & Westwood both at the Tractor boys????? Can't happen?????
Heart-Shaped Fox Posted 7 May 2011 Posted 7 May 2011 Surely he isnt going to Ipswich?! As disappointing as when Victor Moses went to Wigan over the likes of Barcelona (apparantly).
alanf0x Posted 8 May 2011 Posted 8 May 2011 just moved into a place near to me in warwickshire....45 minutes from Leicester, so we may be in with a chance of signing him
Cat Burger Posted 8 May 2011 Posted 8 May 2011 just moved into a place near to me in warwickshire....45 minutes from Leicester, so we may be in with a chance of signing him Hopefully it's a good sign! I think Villa would take him as a successor to Brad, though (Friedel not Guzan!)
Adster Posted 8 May 2011 Posted 8 May 2011 just moved into a place near to me in warwickshire....45 minutes from Leicester, so we may be in with a chance of signing him Nope, sorry, until he's been spotted in Morrisons nothing can be confirmed
Austin Posted 8 May 2011 Posted 8 May 2011 just moved into a place near to me in warwickshire....45 minutes from Leicester, so we may be in with a chance of signing him Stalk him. Tell him we're signing Miroslav Klose, might persuade him.
davieG Posted 9 May 2011 Posted 9 May 2011 Everton interested - http://www.sportsnewsireland.com/soccer_irish/23733/?
Jimmy Posted 9 May 2011 Posted 9 May 2011 is Tim Howard leaving Everton then? doubt he'll go to be back up
poggypogpog Posted 10 May 2011 Posted 10 May 2011 It's nearly a done deal with Everton according to the mirror. :-(
Carlos9 Posted 12 May 2011 Posted 12 May 2011 He was in Leicester yesterday talking to someone from the club according to someone close to his family. Beleive it or not, i have been here a while and havent made anything up before! I just heard this earlier today.
whitlock Posted 12 May 2011 Posted 12 May 2011 Westwood and Gally are good mates. Doest mean he'll sign but Gally might be able to persuade him.
munf1987 Posted 13 May 2011 Posted 13 May 2011 take it as you want to, but a guy from work, son is in the cov academy. After talking to him today about players we're meant to be after he came out with - Westwood and Gunnarson both agreed gentlemen agreements with Leicester, just need to sign on the dotted line. Also the King deal is quite unlikely to happen. He is a notts co fan but speaks to the coaches at cov. In my opinion would both be great signings, 2 of cov's best players on frees would be brilliant Come on Sven get them signed (and Maynard)
Guest Bilo Posted 13 May 2011 Posted 13 May 2011 If that's true, those are two excellent signings. Gunnarsson is one of the most underrated players in the Championship for me and everyone knows how good Westwood is. Couple of good defenders, a pacey partner to Yak and we're there.
bmt Posted 14 May 2011 Posted 14 May 2011 Westwood and Gunnarsson but not King? Good deal. Completely agree. Can see why we would go for King if we can get him for free but there are better strikers about without the track record. If we don't have to splash out on Gunnarsson and Westwood surely the savings justify spending a bit more on a striker (Graham please).
ajthefox Posted 14 May 2011 Posted 14 May 2011 Don't really know too much about Gunnarson but would be more than happy to have Westwood on a free. Could happen relatively soon as well, as according to this article Cov have set the the three mentioned a deadline of the 19th for them to sign new deals... http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/teams/c/coventry_city/9483766.stm Not sure Cov are really in a position to do that though..
