Steven Posted 4 May 2011 Posted 4 May 2011 Just to cheer everyone up, it was on this day in 2008 that we stopped being one of the nine. http://www.skysports.com/football/match_report/0,19764,11065_2849474,00.html
Ashley Posted 4 May 2011 Posted 4 May 2011 We need the above to happen if you ask me, did us good aswell
Wymsey Posted 4 May 2011 Posted 4 May 2011 Shit end to an awfully shit season, but we had to go down to recover as a football club like we are now.
Guest Bilo Posted 4 May 2011 Posted 4 May 2011 Horrible time but if Stearman's header had been one inch further to the left(?) of the post we wouldn't be where we are now. We may have either been where Coventry are now or just gone down the following season. We really were woeful.
Fox92 Posted 4 May 2011 Posted 4 May 2011 Yes bad day, I remember well. Remember going to the Stoke v Leicester match and having my headphones in listening to Southampton v Sheffield United at the same time - the only time I have ever done that at a match. That season was horrible. I can remember going to Bramall Lane and James Beattie scoring a hat trick in something like 15 minutes.
davieG Posted 4 May 2011 Posted 4 May 2011 Well I'd sooner we had retained our membership of the 9, it's pure speculation as to whether we would have been worse off not getting relegated, plenty of clubs have been in the doldrums at the bottom of the Championship and turned it around without getting relegated. You never know Mandaric might have rediscovered his brain or Holloway could have taken us up instead of Blackpool, we'll never know but I'm not prepared to accept it would have been worse to stay up. Mandaric completely failed Leicester City and it's fans and we still had to suffer his bullshit, I've no doubt he views it as a success especially as he no doubt made a profit from his ownership.
Corky Posted 4 May 2011 Posted 4 May 2011 Horrible day, worst supporting the club for everyone I'd imagine, but the past three years have been significantly better than the five dreadful, mediocre ones before where we barely got out of the bottom half.
The Padster Posted 4 May 2011 Posted 4 May 2011 I'd just moved into a house on Upperton Rd that morning and went down to the Pump & Tap to watch it. After the match I stormed out and was left alone to walk about 50 feet in front of some mates coming to my house with fists clenched muttering obscenities. I was not a happy chappy that afternoon.
Iwan is a Welshman Posted 4 May 2011 Posted 4 May 2011 Worst day of my Leicester supporting life by a long way. Seconded by Wednesday at home the week before when we meekly surrendered a lead, Hume missed that penalty, and we almost sealed our fate. So frustrating that season (apart from the League Cup run.) It's not been nice having to watch that berk Holloway on SSN all year either. (Why did he keep playing Hume down the right!!!!!!!!!!!!!!?????????? Why did he bring Harry Worley in for his senior debut in arguably the biggest game in the clubs history - and play him out of position!!!!!!!!!!!!!!?????????????) So many things went wrong that season. It was just a lesson in how not to run a football club. I'm glad Mandaric has gone, and even though he appears to have found us some cracking owners, I'll never forgive him for that season. His chop 'n' change policy caused that as much as Holloway's idiotic tactics. I remember someone telling me they'd seen Holloway at the Player of the Season awards and asked him about what he thought about us going down (this would have been before the Stoke game.) "If we go down, we go down, I've come to terms with it" was his reported response. I know you're a fool if you rely on hearsay but I couldn't avoid that making my blood boil. Forest and Derby have won the league. Our biggest claim was being one of that nine. Just think if that Stearman header had gone in as well... Since then though, we've had two cracking seasons, and for all the complaints over this one it's not been that bad in the context of things.
StanSP Posted 4 May 2011 Posted 4 May 2011 Horrible time but if Stearman's header had been one inch further to the left(?) of the post we wouldn't be where we are now. We may have either been where Coventry are now or just gone down the following season. We really were woeful. Didn't Hume have a shot from about 6-yards out which the keeper somehow saved?! He had a clear sight on goal and the keeper still got across .
Guest Col city fan Posted 4 May 2011 Posted 4 May 2011 Didn't Hume have a shot from about 6-yards out which the keeper somehow saved?! He had a clear sight on goal and the keeper still got across . Yes he did... possibly the worst part of that day was having to endure the taunts of the Shitty Stoke fans on the coach after the game. My son (14 at the time) was distraught at us going down and we both said we never wanted to have to suffer it again. I agree with most posts on here though... with the benefit of hindsight, it was good that we did because it forced us to rebuild

Absolutely, losing that record hurt a great deal, but I think staying up would've papered over the cracks, that "next year will be our year" which we had every season. Suddenly we were further away from that target than ever before and it forced us to accept it.
JJS84 Posted 4 May 2011 Posted 4 May 2011 I watched this game in fuerteventura, with a Stoke fan, a Plymouth fan, a Southampton fan and a cov fan. Was horrible, only the stoke fan had the manners to say sorry, and bought me a drink. Having the said that the bar owner who was from Leicestershire but a Man Utd fan, got me steamo on sambuca FOC! so cant argue with that. Took me a few minutes the next morning to remember we'd gone down.
samjohnson Posted 4 May 2011 Posted 4 May 2011 The atmosphere at the Britannia that day was extremely weird. I will always remember that awful day. But what followed was fantastic and I think we wouldnt be hear today without the help of Nigel Pearson. He, albeit at another club to start with, started the forward motion that has got us where we are today, a much bigger club. I think getting relegated was the best option for us. A massive slap in the face and an ice-cube in the boxers to wake us up.
Iwan is a Welshman Posted 4 May 2011 Posted 4 May 2011 That was when Kisnorbo got sent-off after about ten mins I think... The c*** Billy Sharp dived in the box right in front of us. I was only about 10 yards away. Never forgiven him.

Agree with this, Holloway may have gone in the season anyway knowing Mandaric - what if he had appointed Pearson in the summer? I'm quite sure he we wouldn't have gone down under him. We might be better off now but we might still have been better off. It was a proud record being in the group of 9 and I still wish we were in it. The record I want to break is the annoying 'been in the most FA Cup Finals without winning' one
Finnegan Posted 4 May 2011 Posted 4 May 2011 Horrible time but if Stearman's header had been one inch further to the left(?) of the post we wouldn't be where we are now. We may have either been where Coventry are now or just gone down the following season. We really were woeful. I like the idea of blaming everything on Stearman. I'm behind this.
The Doctor Posted 4 May 2011 Posted 4 May 2011 I'm perfectly happy with blaming Stearman for everything but wasn't that header being discussed made by McAuley?
Finnegan Posted 4 May 2011 Posted 4 May 2011 I'm perfectly happy with blaming Stearman for everything but wasn't that header being discussed made by McAuley? McAuley missed a header against Stoke, yeah. I assumed this was another incident? No idea though.
gazfox9 Posted 4 May 2011 Posted 4 May 2011 I'm perfectly happy with blaming Stearman for everything but wasn't that header being discussed made by McAuley? Yeah I too thought that header against Stoke was by Gareth McAuley.

I wholeheartedly agree with all of this. By far my worst day as a city fan, I actually cried. As likely as relegation seemed, it is just pure speculation and that record was something special that can never be brought back. When you think about it, who would ever have thought before that game, that by may 2011, we could possibly have been through what we have since then and would be in the position we are now? I know for certain if someone said to me back then, "you will smash League 1 under Pearson, come agonisingly close to a Play-off final at Wembley the following year and then miss out on the play-offs by a few points, with a summer to prepare with Sven in charge and backing by rich thais" I'd laugh my tits off in their face, and so would all but the most deluded of fans. I'm not really complaining now, but it does pain me a little that something to be really proud of like that record exists no longer.
ScouseFox Posted 4 May 2011 Posted 4 May 2011 Most painful day I remember being a Leicester fan, but one that properly hooked me. Before that day I was a Leicester fan, who checked results and went to the occasional game and wanted us to win. But since that match, the emotions I felt as we were staying up/going down/went down were huge, and I got myself a season ticket the following week. And as has been said, it started a clear out that allowed us to come back stronger. So, as horrible as it was, it was the start of som'ing special.
Tuna Posted 4 May 2011 Posted 4 May 2011 Has anyone noticed that match report has one CLIVE CLARKE playing for Leicester in that Stoke match - he had his heart attack and had retired from the game by then.
