  1. 1. Should City bid for Shane Long?

    • Yes but no more than £6m
    • Yes but no more than £4m
    • Yes cash and player exchange
    • Only if we fail to land Nicky Maynard
    • Only if another Championship side makes a bid
    • No not a chance

only reports that our bid was accepted from bently's roof... that may have been when you were on though. was apparently backed up by sky sports and "reliable" tweeters, but not by brian mcdermott.

so nothing has actually happened no.

Cheers Bilo & themotivator, wasn't sure about reading 20 pages. It seems the Maynard thread lurkers have just upped sticks and set up camp in here now, minus the Bristol ****** obviously.

I hope we don't sign him for 7,000,000, but if we can, then meh. Whatever. We've got the money to do it.

7 million is so expensive, but I dont want to be pessimistic about such an outcome, if he bags the goals i'll be ok with it then. Still think a loan signing for an out of favour premier league striker could be a better move though.

Re. the poll for this, shame there is no option for "whatever it takes". If a strong striker is the last piece of the jigsaw that Sven wanted to put together over the summer, then I would have thought he will be trying to do whatever he can to secure that player. Sometimes, if you want something enough, you can't put a price on it so you may pay more than what someone else thinks that thing is worth in order to secure it. I think that's kind of where we are at this stage of the season, just needing to build on what looks to have been some good work in the transfer window so far. If we have the best keeper, defence and midfield in the league, it's unlikely to be enough to secure the promotion prize we are aiming for without a strike force of similar quality.

Objectively, I'd say a good Championship striker who's just had a very good season would ordinarily be worth around £3 to 4m. If we have to pay £7 or 8m to match Reading's valuation and speak to the player, then provided we can afford to do so (and we're not selling off someone else to finance it) I would not feel like we'd ben ripped off. We'd have paid what we needed to.

As the price goes up, there must always be a point where we could argue that there is a better option available to us - for argument's sake, let's say if we were pushed to £10m then there might be other players available in that bracket who we could start to attract. But actually, I think it's false to state that (a) we have loads of options and (b) we could spend £7 or 8m on better options. Sven is clearly looking at a very particular group of players - those with Championship experience, not too green or too old, proven ability to hack it in the English leagues. That's why we paid £5m or whatever for Mills - we could probably have got a Premiership cast-off or a decent foreign name for that money, but there would be a considerably greater risk around settling in and performing at the standard we need. Mills knows the league, what's expected of him, he's young enough to be hungry to get promotion and you can imagine he really wants to do well for us.

I think Long would fit that mould, more so than an Adebayor or Robbie Keane or even a young Premiership prospect - all of these might be available on a cheaper overall package but would provide far less certainty of giving a return on the investment.

A big name that wouldn't give two hoots if we got promotion or someone committed to the cause who would really want to help us up? Hmm.

cant we just loan the yak for 6months then get long and maynard for about 6 quid in jan?

well no. For a start according to Sven last night the owners' business plan is to buy and own players rather than rely on loans - they may be shrewd buys and have enduring value or profit potential or maybe not (even Akinbiyi had some trade on value - I think we flogged him to Palace). One thing is certain it is unlikely to be less financially savvy than paying the likes of spurs millions in loan fees and giving their players match experience whilst at the same time paying their wages

Christ, I'm glad you're not a chairman. This is the kind of attitude that gets clubs into administration and is exactly the reason why football finances are incredibly skewed and why clubs will end up going out of business.

I am also glad I'm not chairman. But my comment wasn't entirely serious, although if Mr Chairman has the money, and this is how he wants to spend it, then why shouldn't he?

@craiglcfc Jong I've heard nothing on. Sven is concentrating in long as his #1 now. The bid has gone in, yet to be rejected.

They obviously can't read, as many of us have questioned the financial situation. The fact of the matter is there is **** all we can do about it.

I love how any team that spends money now automatically means they'll be in administration. Even so all these Reading fans saying 'why aren't the Leicester fans wondering where the money is from etc.' well we as fans can't do a bloody thing about it anyway so we'll just sit back and enjoy the ride while it lasts. People comparing us to bloody Pompey are going over the top as well.

They have read one thread and decided we don't care, haven't questioned it once and thus deserve to go into admin again.

I sense them slowly turning into Bristol City fans.
