NeilyBoy Posted 3 August 2011 Posted 3 August 2011 Since we know for sure that Sven's taking a look at these guys, where do the fans on this board stand? In Long's favour he's younger and, although only for one good season following years of cack, is somewhat proven at this level. But does Shane warrant his high fee (at least £7m I think is the latest word) or is it too risky? There are many good reasons to bring Jong in: He's cheaper, more experienced and has played many games at international level. But does his lack of English experience and the fact that he's played at a relatively poor club level (the J. League and 2nd Bundesliga are imo not as competitive as the Championship, but perhaps you disagree) make him more of a risk? Hmmmmmmm...
topharry123 Posted 3 August 2011 Posted 3 August 2011 Long is far too pricey for one good season. Maybe he'll keep it going maybe he won't, but 7m is too much for one good season. Jong is a great player and has a decent record. Proven at international level and maybe not so much at decent club level but seems to be far cheaper. Think he'll be more value for money and could be a real hidden gem in our team. Personally i'd like Sven to bring in Jong and Le Fondre.
CKB Posted 3 August 2011 Posted 3 August 2011 I'd bring in Jong, simply to see what he has and whether in the future he could cut it in England... I'd bring in Long for no more than 2.5 million

I'd bring in Long for no more than 2.5 million Yeah, I think Reading's valuation of 8 mil is pretty stupid for a 24 yr old with one good season on his back. I'm not sure how many clubs would be willing to pay that when he only has a year left on his contract... But equally I think Jong's international experience shouldn't hold too much sway considering over half of his international goals came in 2 matches in 2007 against Macau and Mongolia... I think Long's a better prospect but it's really a question of value for money and I'm still very torn.
Dan Posted 3 August 2011 Posted 3 August 2011 I'm gonna have to go with Jong. At the same price, probably Long, but it's not just the money loss that'd worry me with Long, it's the pressure on him to perform as well IMO. Jong is an unknown quantity, but he comes across as a very talented player, one of whom the fans would really take to as well. I think he'd really succeed in a creative side like ours and I hope we land him. £8mil for Long?
Jaspa Posted 3 August 2011 Posted 3 August 2011 Maynard > Long Jong > Long The epic battle of Nicky and Jong? Both! C'mon Sven show us you meen bussiness
Zingari Posted 3 August 2011 Posted 3 August 2011 I reckon we should go for David Silva as well . just imagine a forward line of Long Jong Silva Yaaarrrr
lestajigs Posted 3 August 2011 Posted 3 August 2011 I reckon we should go for David Silva as well . just imagine a forward line of Long Jong Silva Yaaarrrr Thats good for this time of the morning!?

bluesbrothers Posted 3 August 2011 Posted 3 August 2011 Gotta be Jong. I have this overwhelming feeling that even if he only nets 10, that would still be a better value for money return at 2.5 million that shelling out on Long. Plus, as someone raised in Japan, he's fluent in Japanese, so Yuki will have someone to talk to! In fact, the North Korean education system is pretty impressive with languages. He knows 6 fluently - here he is giving an interview in portugese to Brazillian TV before the world cup game.
ollie b Posted 3 August 2011 Posted 3 August 2011 its hard to say who would be better Jongs record proves he never really has been a 20+ a season striker in fact 15 goals in J-league and 5 goals in 2 different cups ( 22 total )has been his best year and sadly he plays at a much lower standard of league Long record isn't great either but unlike Jong long has age on his side and has proved that in 2 years in the premiership he can score there too and has also started to prove he can score at international level. so i think jong would be a gamble but if he is cheap try him but i think long is the better long term option but not for that stupid amount of money
kam6 Posted 3 August 2011 Posted 3 August 2011 still think that being held to ransom for two differnt players in their last year of contracts is a bit stupid! i think that getting a foreign player who is young and scoring goals (gerndt maybe) would maybe pay off. but keeping in the topic, i would go for jong
ROB-THE-BLUE Posted 3 August 2011 Posted 3 August 2011 When the winter kicks in it'd be good to have both of them. Can't beat a pair of LONG JONG's
TheUltimateWinner Posted 3 August 2011 Posted 3 August 2011 Waste of money, I'd buy jong and get someone on loan.
Tielemans63 Posted 3 August 2011 Posted 3 August 2011 Of the two I'd rather have Long. Of all the strikers we've been linked with I'd have Robbie Keane.
Criggers Posted 3 August 2011 Posted 3 August 2011 Rather see Maynard than Long. Feels like Sven wanted Maynard but because Brizzle are playing some extreme hard ball we've gone to a backup plan - a backup plan who costs more! I dont understand why we would pay £7m for Long. After chasing Maynard for a over month why not just give Brizzle the £7m and be done with it?
MGLCFC Posted 3 August 2011 Posted 3 August 2011 I wouldn't give up on Maynard just yet - it could be Sven trying to force Bristol City's hand by suggesting we afre looking elsewhere!!!
Happy Fox Posted 3 August 2011 Posted 3 August 2011 I wouldn't give up on Maynard just yet - it could be Sven trying to force Bristol City's hand by suggesting we afre looking elsewhere!!! No I genuinely feel that Sven has given up on this, who can blame him though

He's scored about 45 goals in 95 games for them as near as dammit 1 in 2 throughout his whole time there, unless you can play around 95 games in a season I'm not sure why you twist the facts Goalscorers who score 1 in 2 cost a certain amount and that certain amount is usually a lot, especially when they're good enough to catch they're of a number of teams, unlike someone who has never done the business at this level week-in/week-out
bluebeau Posted 3 August 2011 Posted 3 August 2011 Would be great to get them both imo, plus if we did, then the Maynard saga would be Long Jong!
Will1981 Posted 3 August 2011 Posted 3 August 2011 I would go for Jong as Korean's seem very well suited to the English game and seem to adapt very quickly. ps 7m is a joke for Long as it is for Maynard, so get Jong in and when we are top in January tie Long and Maynard up on pre-contracts and sign them both on free's in the summer.
