Tottenham and other disturbances / riots

The students weren't fighting for freedom at all so you can not try and wriggle out what you said about people having an education. The students committed violence and started fires as well as trashed buildings so they were rioting just like the latest nobheads. The students had made their point with their protests so didnt need anything else to happen so what other reason could it have been apart from the buzz?

Anarchists.

People who have formed a perceived reason and cause to riot.

Pointless as the make up of the protagonists cannot be quantified....

Leicestershire Police

Police in #Leicester are taking positive action against groups of individuals who may cause trouble in the city tonight

Leicestershire Police

Last night in the city we had groups of youths who were using bikes to get to areas of disorder. to prevent this tonight officers are stopping youths and giving them a choice of either leaving the city or having the air let out of the tyres to prevent them using them to go to any areas of potential disorder

I was going to post the tyre info. Made me laugh.

It is a very good approach though.

I think that the other incentive not to loot will also be effective: smartwater. I do see a problem though. If its been used to prevent future looting surely you need to make sure EVERYONE knows about it otherwise its going to be like Dr Strangelove.

EDIT: A man who decided to come into the city in possession of a hammer has been arrested. This man is now in custody and hammer recovered. http://twitter.com/#!/leicspolice

im not going to bother reading that as im sure its about anarcists latching on to the student protest, which was no secret. It still doesn't alter the fact that the educated students were rioting in the heart of London.

anyway, im off, up at 4am so bed soon, and although I havent agreed with alot of what you put I have enjoyed the debate so cheers for that

I can honestly say I've enjoyed no aspect of it and feel ashamed with myself that I gave your 'argument' based on conversations with your friends any credence.

Although enjoy your slumber

come on, dont duck out now just because i've backed you into a corner. you have said that these rioters have been committing anti social behaviour because of where they are brought up and how they are brought up by parents not caring etc. Why did the

students kick off then in their protests when they in the whole have had completely different upbringings and people could argue even privaleged compared to the people in Leicesters shitholes?

edit - I must include this quote you said earlier "If everyone was given a fair crack of the whip from the begining education wise, this kind of shit wouldn't happen." hmmmmm

Reading this has made me think this is the age old debate of nature vs nurture - I can't remember who was the winner.

I would also challenge your view on up bringing as you seem to also be basing it on class. It is possible to be brought up by rich parents who don't provide you with a moral compass and therefore you become a twat.

It is equally possible that you come from a poor background but thanks to a strong family unit or positive influence on the way (teacher/coach) you earn respect, decency and end up pulling you up the social ladder.

I am not disagreeing that there is some chemical reaction to the kind of behaviour in the brain, almost drug like, but surely it would be the persons upbringing and sense of morals that would get them in that place first, after all, how would a first timer truly know of the adrenaline rush involved?

Which refers exactly to my question asking whether football hooligans would be treated in the same manner?

Definitely not. I'm very suprised at some of the video I've seen of police standing by watching (in the first 48 hours). They must have been ordered not to act because they could have sorted alot of this trouble out quickly. I bet they were raring to go aswell and alot of them are probably just as puzzled as the rest of us as to why they were held back.

I read this line somewhere else and I agree after watching some of the videos, "It's like the looters had a police escort with the added bonus of a chance of an interview on primetime TV".

@robnixoncity There are at present no indication to suggest the cancellation of any weekend matches due to any potential disorder.

Let's hope it stays that way.

I'm pretty sure I read somewhere a police officer was complaining that they were told to hold and show restraint. Can't remember where it was but I'll have a look for it.

Thank heavens the country may sleep a little quieter tonight.

The past few nights have been England's shame and i hope the political quarrelling and points-scoring can wait until next week, god willing that the streets are still calm by then.

Though the Police have come under a lot of criticism, including by me who thought they should have enforced the law with far more "verve" shall we say, it has to be said that they MIGHT have been right all along to not unleash the dogs of war.

However there is still a LONG way to go before the country can move on and begin to assess the true causes for this violence and mayhem, and do it no matter how hard it may be to face up to some home truths about the current condition of our culture and society.

The police can't win, if they gave the bastards some truncheon there would be huge editorials in the Guardian and the BBC about police brutality. Their tactics seem to be now letting the rioters do their worse but filming it so that they can prosecute them later.

Problem is what's going to happen if they do prosecute them, the worse they'll get is community service and they probably won't turn up for that.

To be fair, if the police had shown too much force "we'd" look like absolute hyprocrites for getting involved in Libya or any other foreign affair that might happen.

Due to not wanting to loose the moral high ground our government was hoisted by its own petard.

Salford is still in upheaval. 100 yoofs trying to fight their way into a Money Shop this evening

Maybe they're taking back the money they nicked last night?
