MONreborn Posted 27 August 2011 Posted 27 August 2011 A great win and a proper football game real end to end excitement between two teams who will surely be up there. You could tell Southampton have been a team together for years yet we overwhelmed them in the first half.
MONreborn Posted 27 August 2011 Posted 27 August 2011 About Sven I think he will learn from this. Remember last match against forest when gallagher came on for nugent? This time he chose schlupp but no one seems to have mentioned this. Played Sven! Also nigel adkins is a **** he sarcastically clapped for ages when the peno on schlupp wasn't given did any one else see this?
B52 Posted 27 August 2011 Posted 27 August 2011 I couldnt cope with winning like that every week! The LRI would be overworked with all the fans suffering from stress and heart related problems! Great value for the money
philce Posted 27 August 2011 Posted 27 August 2011 Thanks I was in the Kop and thought that the defender nicked the ball away from Schlupp. Obviously not. One of them should've been given. From L1 I didnt think it was a pen, Schlupp stumbled and was falling anyway, not sure of the Vasell one. Their "claim" was a joke, I was right in line and on-one touched him, he just dived, blatant!
wolfgang amadeus Posted 27 August 2011 Posted 27 August 2011 On SSN Paul Merson was very complimentary about the game, kept saying how it was a great end to end game. Think we should give this back 4 a chance, potentially between Konchesky/Paintsil/Mills/Bamba/SSN our defence looks terrific on paper and given time hopefully it'll have settled within the next few months and we can start keeping come clean sheets and making life easier for our strikers.
STEVIE B Posted 27 August 2011 Posted 27 August 2011 Totally agree that the linesman got so much wrong in the 2nd half, never in line with play. Southampton were one of the best sides i've seen recently and probably deserved a point, we deserved 3pts last week though. Swings & roundabouts eh ? A clean sheet would be great,Wellens,Bamber & Casper superb though. Up the City !!
cc_star Posted 27 August 2011 Posted 27 August 2011 The moaners will continue to moan even though we've won 3pts and scored 3 goals. Almost throwing away win after win & conceding lots of soft goals is a good thing of course Yes the win should be celebrated, but boy was it almost another balls up, appeasing the management team when they make poor decisions isn't nothing to special either. And the only thing louder than moaners is people moaning about moaners. Great 1st half by the sounds of it, poor second which was almost shocking, and for the millionth time in a row Sven can only deliver 1 good half, which is probably good enough for 7th to 10th, but isn't good enough for top2 Still, 3pts is 3 pts. Awesome result
Rincewind Posted 27 August 2011 Posted 27 August 2011 If people are going to get distressed when we win I dread to think what they will do when we lose.
volpeazzurro Posted 27 August 2011 Posted 27 August 2011 The facts are of course I'm glad we got 3 points but did we deserve them? As for those who seem to anyone that criticises as mere moaners, well all I can say is that if you think that sort of display and previous one's this season are good enough to take us to the promised land then I feel you are sadly deluded in your blue tinted specs. Southampton at times, appeared to have more ability on the ball than us and certainly seemed more organised. So why does it happen? The buck has to stop with Ericsson full stop. Firstly, as has been mentioned, his formations/tactics can be doubtful, but for me its his constant persistance in fielding all of what he considers to be 'his best players; and not 'his best team'. rthat is woeful. Whether this is because he feels he has to justify all the money he has spent or whether he doesn't know what his best team is, is debateable, though lets face it, he had most of last season and still couldn't work that out. What does annoy me is his constant playing people out of position. Let me think now, a right midfielder (DANNS) played wide on the left where he clearly wasn't comfortable, a centre forward or occasional wide left player (SCHLUPP) played wide on the right and a player who can play both wide roles if neccessary (VASSELL) at centre forward. There are so many more intelligent viable options. Lets face it, he's got form for it i.e. Scholes wide left for England etc! Why is it that teams that have had little or no monet to spend compared with Ericsson's £10m seem better prepared? And don't give me that time to gel routine, other teams manage it. We'd have done better with last years team before Sven started delving into the transfer market like a drunk in an Off License. Ericsson makes a relatively simple game complex and clearly doesn't understand it at this level at least.
wurmer Posted 27 August 2011 Posted 27 August 2011 A win is a win - moaners need to STFU. Onto the next game......

It's two teams every match and be honest, IF Sven had kept the the 4-4-2 you had moaned about no second plan(or something similar) especially if we lost.... Wich we didn't..

marbelladave Posted 27 August 2011 Posted 27 August 2011 Evening all. A great result, just about deserved but a close run thing. still a fair few things not working though. Same personel as at Forest, but the 'diamond' was nothing like as obvious as last week, more a 4-1-3-2 for me. Wellens played the deep role and in front of him, Fernandez, King and Danns played with a fair degree of flexibility, Danns switching flanks, King pulling out left to make the first goal and Fernandez popping up pretty much everywhere. First 30 minutes or so we were well on top, never quite in total command as Southampton are a side playing well, but just about worth our 2-0. Then, 2 goals up, City did what they always do, sat back and invited Southampton onto them and like Forest last week, they did not need asking twice. Consistent pressure gave them a goal back and they looked quite capable of squareing things up before the break, but City broke away and and scored a disputed goal, against the run of play, on the stroke of half time. 3-1 was rather more than we deserved. After the break we switched to 4-3-3 and were largely overun, Wellens had one of his better games but sat too deep as usual, as the holding player he is supposed to step out and break up the play, not play as an auxilliary center half. With Fernandez and King apparantly having no clue as to their responsibilities defence wise and with neither Danns nor Schlupp doing anything like enough to cover in the wide positions, Southampton were totally dominant and we were very lucky to concede only the one goal. With our midfield doing little to cover them, our entire back 5 defended heroically, sure they made a few mistakes but considering the number of times they were left exposed by our hopelessly ineffective midfield they all did pretty well.

But you don't need to switch plans when you're doing well! If we'd started to falter in the second half and he refused to try and do anything to alter it (which infact is what happened after he changed things around!), then yes, I will criticise.

I don't think its always the formation he chooses, but more the players he employs to fulfill the roles of those formations which sometimes defies logic.
B52 Posted 27 August 2011 Posted 27 August 2011 But you don't need to switch plans when you're doing well! The problem here is if we began to struggle and Sven changed or if Sven got defensive.. Who knows? If Soton seem to get what we're doing we have to change before it's get out of hand. We have to rely on our defence a lot if we want promotion and games like this are great for teamspirit.
FoxyPV Posted 27 August 2011 Posted 27 August 2011 Everything I'm going to say has probably already been said but here's my tuppence worth. Listening to this match made my heart skip several beats. I thought "oh fuck here we go again" but we showed some fight (and some luck) and managed to grind out a very good result. I was really concerned by two things - Sven moving from a 4 4 2 to a 4 3 3 which then coincided with them gaining more control and putting us under increased pressure - The lack of marking for Connolly's goal. It seemed like Konchesky appeared to lose his head and go for a dander. Matt Mills was heroic in the last 10minutes. Our third should have never been allowed as Bamba was all over Lambert but swings and roundabouts. 3 points in the bag and onwards and upwards
Freeman's Wharfer Posted 27 August 2011 Posted 27 August 2011 Good win, good game. Hopefully we'll take a bit of confidence from that. Think the main difference was that Southampton came for an open game, attacking us in contrast to Reading and Bristol City who came to sit behind the ball and take a point (eventually nicking all three on the break). Any manager with a bit of sense will do that over the next few games as we've struggled to break teams down and if it's an open game we can cut through teams at times. Southampton look decent, think they'll be up there at the end of the season if they can carry on like that. Lallana, Lambert, Harding and Do Prado stood out for me. For us I thought Vassell was brilliant today. He works so hard, can take it past people and he can finish. Bamba almost got caught out at one point, love his composure but sometimes he needs to put it in the stands. Think it might have been a foul for the o.g. too King did an understated yet good job; offering for the ball, linking things up and running at people. Heard some guy on the way out moaning about how he's done nothing this year. Did you not see the first goal mate?! I think the midfield four we had today could be the answer. Mills: we've definitely been done. He had an average game (assisting for their goal aside) but still makes so many simple mistakes that you wouldn't expect of a top class centre half. Hopefully we can get solid enough in other areas that we can get away with having him in there and protect him a bit, but my personal preference at the minute would be to get Tunch back and pair him with Bamba. He's got to be worth a chance if he's fit and playing as well as Palace fans report. Obviously the last ten or so were pretty tense, and I was loving Pantsil's lap of honour!
Dylan Posted 27 August 2011 Posted 27 August 2011 I see Claridge and the FLS fail to show and mention our clear penalty shout but make a lot of the own goal 'foul'.
Yojoe36 Posted 27 August 2011 Posted 27 August 2011 Just watching the football league show. Sol Sol Bamba
Yojoe36 Posted 27 August 2011 Posted 27 August 2011 I see Claridge and the FLS fail to show and mention our clear penalty shout but make a lot of the own goal 'foul'. And we had waaaayyy more chances. Really good one's like Konchesky's free-kick. But no. Apperently a boring 1-1 draw between Blackpool and palace is more important <_<

kingfox Posted 27 August 2011 Posted 27 August 2011 Will have my say on it after a nerve racking day. Southampton are a very very good side, and we were lucky to win that. First half we played excellent best football I have watched all season, then Sven changed formation and it went down hill. We were lucky to come out with three points, the defending was nerve racking and hasty in the second half but we got away with it. Kasper is the man to thank tonight another incredible performance. Roll on our next game, it was very tough today and Southampton will definitely be up there.
ajthefox Posted 27 August 2011 Posted 27 August 2011 Found our coverage a little amusing on the FLS. Whilst I totally agree that our third was a foul, it's a little annoying when they don't even mention either of our penalty shouts, I'm genuinely interested to see them both again on a replay.
