boring_jester Posted 27 August 2011 Posted 27 August 2011 Maybe I mis-heard. That's what it sounded like to me. Sven was saying Nugent could be out for 2, 3 weeks
StarFox Posted 27 August 2011 Posted 27 August 2011 Great match today. Best game I've watched in ages. Performance was good too. Only two negatives though, we need a striker who can hold the ball up in the second half (as Nugent has an injury) and Matt Mills needs to sort his head out as he's letting the team down. Other than that, I thought we played like champions
Webbo Posted 27 August 2011 Posted 27 August 2011 How can anyone it was an error to change the formation. Nobody can know that we wouldn't have lost if we'd had stuck at 442. It was obvious that Soton would throw everything at us in the second half, it made sense to pack the midfield. Whether it worked or not is debatable.
Raw Dykes Posted 27 August 2011 Posted 27 August 2011 Sven was saying Nugent could be out for 2, 3 weeks Good job we've got a two week break, really.
Thracian Posted 27 August 2011 Posted 27 August 2011 First of all lets put this commendable victory into context. Southampton are an excellent side who were unbeaten at the top of the league and who had gone 18 games or so without defeat. They play excellent football whether they're winning or losing and are a very difficult team to contain. We not only beat them but totally outplayed them for the first 35 minutes of the game Not one member of our side failed to make a contribution to that position and but for one excellent save by their keeper and a lesser save when a relatively easy header should have gone into the corner we might have had five in the first half. Then, and without any sign that Southampton were starting to mount a response, we did exactly what we did at Forest and voluntarily elected to go all defensive and try to hold on. Saints couldn't have wished for a more codial invitation. The decision just invited trouble and the more so because it totally played to Saints strength of passing the ball quickly, moving well off the ball and feeding it to dangerous players who clearly relish scoring goals. Yes, I could understand that some of our players - Schlupp and King among them - might start to fade having had cup action a week when Southampton were disengaged but I really didn't see how becoming so frustratingly negative could be justified given how much it cost us at The City ground. And on many other days it would have cost us two points once more. Because we went from restricting Saints chances to . little more than crumbs to a situation where Schmiechel was required to give an outstanding joint man of the match performance and make three point-blank saves to prevent a repeat of last week's capitulation. For me it was big mistake not having Dyer on the bench, even with the change of system because there was three occasions when we had a promising breakaway but no-one with the speed and energy to find the gaps in what was a ragged Saints back line. He was exactly the sort of player we needed. Instead Gallagher again came on and served no purpose that I could see. With Wellens and King also going off and Schlupp running on empty it left us threadbare and with not a single sensible outlet ball nor anyone with the strength or inclination to pass and move forwards with conviction. More and more we simply gave the ball away - and to a team who were always likely to hurt you as a thankyou. Altogether the win was much welcome but it also re-emphasised the thinking of a manager whose tactics often seem to threaten our situation rather than enhance it. As for man-of-the-match how Alan Young could single out Konchelsky ahead of Wellens or Schmiechel is about as strange as Sven opting for 4-5-1. The decision should have been about which had the greatest effect, Schmiechel's points-saving blocks or Wellens conducting of our orchestra in midfield for an hour and scoring a memorable goal. I can't decide and won't bother - cos they can share the honour for me. Not far behind came Fernandes who, in the end had nothing to work with, but was still charging around doing vital work like an advert for Duracell. Overall we were perhaps as fortunate to take three points today as we were unfortunate to lose two last week but we really need to develop the sort of philosophy that has made Saints such a formidable and consistent team. Even when 3-1 down they stuck to their principles of passing the ball quickly and trying to score goals. Once their questionable defence is strengthened they'll be a formidable threat.
MPH Posted 27 August 2011 Posted 27 August 2011 Can't see how our draw last week was undeserved - we had more shots on and off target than you and an equal amount of possession. Hardly our fault if today's hero was a total prat last week and got himself sent off! I look forward to renewing our discussion early tomorrow evening. p.s. It's more interesting on your forum - ours are full of idiots who just moan and moan and moan . Oh - so is yours! ... Take a look at the following post. You didnt even play us today... Below is how to show some Class as a fan. Fair play to ya. Shot ourselves in the foot a bit first half by the sound of it. Good entertainment......for the neutral. Here's hoping it's a top-of-the-table clash when you come to St Mary's. You lost your 100% record in a pretty big clash today and not a bitter word. Fans as classy as their team. I Really hope you do well this season. All the best.
blueredswed Posted 27 August 2011 Posted 27 August 2011 Anyone saying our 0-1 wins against Cov... Today Cov got 1 point away....against a good team so Guess our away win was much better then we think :scarf:
Webbo Posted 27 August 2011 Posted 27 August 2011 Sven was saying Nugent could be out for 2, 3 weeks I've just listened to it again, BBC. In last last 30 seconds(talking about getting a striker in) he says 'it might take more than 1 or 2 weeks'.

In responce to that, while Saints fans on the whole are an alright bunch, their delusionals are amongst the worst in the league... a few wins and you get this: 4 pages of twaddle. Whatever starting XI you go with you're gonna get hammered. The problem with spending all the money that you have is you lot all now live in a dream world where you think it suddenly means you'll walk all over teams. HUGE wake up call coming tomorrow chaps.... Notice this smug arsehat is nowhere to be seen! Good, foocke off back to your little wumhole! In less "making delusional saints fans eat their words" news, a good result, though hell for the blood pressure. Wellens played a blinder, Vassell worked tirelessly and Fernandes? Well, thank god for Sven knowing him, because he's far too good for this league. Southampton are the best side we've faced no doubt, and despite the pressure we were under, the back four actually need a pat on the back - because Southamptons shots were actually limited despite the intense pressure in the last 20 minutes. Mills is a rock, but could someone PLEASE teach him the basic laws of passing. THAT's where he looks fragile.
lestajigs Posted 27 August 2011 Posted 27 August 2011 Atmosphere was awful today, kop was dreadful ALL game, l1 k j3 were just as bad second half!! Gotta hand it to southampton there support was spot on !!

Heart-Shaped Fox Posted 27 August 2011 Posted 27 August 2011 Oh and on a different note, the half time entertainment was quality! The lads racing around the pitch is always a laugh and even better in the wet. The best bit being one of our kids being pushed, falling over and sliding the Southampton youngster with him, with a chorus of boos from the away fans! Credit to the Southampton fans, good set who were the best I have seen here for a while.
crisp packet Posted 27 August 2011 Posted 27 August 2011 Anybody moaning should have a long look at themselves. We've just beaten the in form team in the championship, handed them their first loss in 18 games, and you have to find the negatives? Just be happy. THIS !!
Webbo Posted 27 August 2011 Posted 27 August 2011 It was an error because it neither improved our defence or attack. It created more space for them and reduced space for our attack. Tbf they scored their second from a set piece, the formation was irrelevant, we got lucky a couple of times but we didn't defend badly. I think you're also under estimating Soton a bit.
TrentFox Posted 27 August 2011 Posted 27 August 2011 Thought mills did alright myself Thought all of our boys were "alright" - we won ..... but how good was Adam Lallana !!!!! Wow ! What I'd give to have him playing in our team where Andy King was ! As good a visiting player as I've seen in ages - ripped us to shreds with his close control and vision.
The Year Of The Fox Posted 27 August 2011 Posted 27 August 2011 Atmosphere was awful today, kop was dreadful ALL game, l1 k j3 were just as bad second half!! We should be driving the team on through every game regardless of the score

I think you're also under estimating Soton a bit. At times we defended shambolicly. Time and time again the passed the ball into our boxes between the relevant central defender and the full back and everytime one of their players got there first. When the ball left our area, it seemed that every time it went to a Southampton player, and then there was no pressing from the midfield which became almost non-existant and was bypassed time and time again. The formation did have something to do with this point. The central midfielders didnt seem to know where they were individually supposed to be playing, Fernandes had a good game but almost tried too hard to make up for the lack of pressing from the other two, meaning he drifted right across the pitch. Southampton got down the wings too often too, as Schlupp especially either didnt defend, or didnt know how. Thats not his fault, he was played out of position and looked uncomfortable throughout the second half. The defence needs a lot of work on it, in general play and especially from corners and the long ball.

Brown Fox Posted 27 August 2011 Posted 27 August 2011 1st half was absolutely quality. I think I can safely say if we get Maynard in a 4-4-2 we will be a bloody unit. Actually thought Mills was pretty good today. Looked much better than he has of late and some of the blocks he made to stop them scoring were incredible. I love how this season we are seeing our defenders throwing themselves at everything in order to keep us in the game. Yes we should have stayed with 4-4-2 but my god today was an entertaining game if I've ever seen one. Very happy.

We should be driving the team on through every game regardless of the score One thing I hate about home games. If a player makes a mistake there's a collective groan and mumble and it must be horrible to hear as a player. You never see applause for effort or an attempt at a good pass etc, it's just grumble grumble grumble.
Bugg Posted 27 August 2011 Posted 27 August 2011 Lallana is a bloody class act, Premier League teams must be sniffing around to get him.
TrentFox Posted 27 August 2011 Posted 27 August 2011 Lallana is a bloody class act, Premier League teams must be sniffing around to get him. Just posted same thing - I think he's been at Saints all the time. Haven't seen him linked with anyone. He would be an oustanding acquisition - but can't imagine they'd part with him cheaply. We couldn't get the ball off him. Total quality.
Guest Col city fan Posted 27 August 2011 Posted 27 August 2011 Did anyone notice that before the match Fernandes kissed the goalpost and crossed himself? Does he usually do that? First time I've noticed. Yes he does..

I think you're also under estimating Soton a bit. I said they played well, I said they were a good team, but we were better first half without doubt. We then changed formation and created nothing and let them create numerous chances. Of course it can't be proved that it caused their good second half, but in my eyes it did a lot to cause it.
