Cardiff Away: League Cup

League Cup Game against Cardiff on Wednesday, ahead of the League game. I think most people would agree that they'd rather take the 3 points than progress through to the next round if we could only win one. But what team do you think we should pick?

A strong starting XI, giving us a good chance of progressing and giving the team more playing time together, or a weaker one (which would still contend), but resting our 'main men' for the Sunday?

I'd go with:

Schmeichel

Paintsil

Mills

Bamba

Ball (if fit?)

Abe

Moussa

Dyer

Danns

Howard

Schlupp

Subs: Weale, St Ledger, Oakley, King, Beckford (Peltier and Vassell too if its 7 subs for Cup; cant remember ruling on Cup)

I'd keep Mills and Bamba at the back so they can reinforce their partnership. I'd rather have none of them play, than just one as I see them as our first choice centre-backs so should be playing together as a pair, getting used to each other rather than swapping and changing partners having to keep adjusting their understanding.

If Ball's fit, I'd stick him at LB and rest Konchesky, and the same with Paintsil replacing Pelts.

I'd rest Fernandes for Sunday, sticking Abe in the CDM role. Think Dyer will definitely start, needs some playing time so I'd put him on the left of a 4-4-2 diamond, with Moussa on the right, and Danns just in front.

Also think Schlupp would definitely start, and would partner him with Howard for the reason that he always seems to do well against Cardiff, and would want to rest Vassell and Beckford. Saying this, I wouldn't be too disappointed if Beckford starts as I see him as a real threat, but can see a Cardiff player targetting him to 'rough him up' for sunday.

I would think that Michael Johnson would start, and I would imagine St Ledger would get a start

Prob something like this!

Only with Schmeichel instead of Weale, and Danns instead of Vassel on the wing.

Pantsil - Mills © - Bamba - Konchesky

Abe - wellens - Johnson - Fernandes

Vassell - Beckford

Subs: Weale, St. Ledgar, Peltier, King, Dyer, Danns, Schlupp

We won't field a weak team like we did at bury because this game won't be easy!

As long as we beat them in the league on the Sunday, (slight reference to last year), Sven can pick any team although I would think the likes of Schlupp and St. Ledger may feature.

Weale

Konchesky

Abe

Wellens

Dyer

Beckford

Not completely full strength but still a reasonably strong team. Personally I'd rest Beckford as in the past couple of games he seemed to get a little knock, nothing too serious but give him a rest ahead of Sunday. Same with Peltier. Will be good for St Ledger, Schlupp, Johnson and Ball to get a run out too.

Just looking at the League Cup fixtures and notced the BBC says our game is off on Wed?

http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/league_cup/fixtures/default.stm

I am assuming this is a mstake?

The one that is off has us at home. The actual fixture is there as well and is on. I suspect they entered it wrong, and then made it clear that the incorrect fixture was off, rather than simply deleting it, to cover their arse in case anyone saw it and went to the KP on Wednesday night, missing the game and demanding compensation from the BBC.

Getting knocked out of the League Cup wouldn't be the end of the world, so I think we should rest our best players for the same fixture in the league at the weekend, and give a run out to the fringe players to give them match practice and fitness. I'd take a strong bench to try and save us in case it's going horribly wrong.

Bench: Schmeichel, Konchesky, Fernandes, Wellens, King, Vassell, Beckford

Not sure about Howard. Is he transfer-listed? If so, I'd start with Beckford instead to get him settled in quicker, and put Abe on the bench. If Ball isn't fit, I'd start Konchesky and put Bamba on the bench.

I still think we need one more backup forward. Any more bad luck with injuries, and we'll be very short of numbers up front.

I agree with almost the entire selection, 'cept for Weale. Never change the keeper.

Rest a few who started today for the likes of Schlupp, Dyer, St Ledger and then back to the same starting 11 for the league game on sunday.

I agree with RawDykes selection, Raksriaksorn isn't bothered about the League Cup, he wants to get in the Premiership yesterday as do all of us, therefore I saw we try to throw this game and focus on ending our 7+ years stint outside of England's top flight.

is this tie reminding anybody else of pompey a year ago? away in the cup and then in the league a few days later on tv??

Weak team please. Watch us win in the cup then lose in the league, would be typical of us

I'd keep our strongest players out so they are fresher for the sunday, and so Cardiff can't suss out how to counter us at full strength.
