RumbleFox Posted 27 September 2011 Posted 27 September 2011 I was reading through the forum today whilst having a quick fiddle downstairs like I often to do only to be put off my stroke by the amount of people saying we should drop Vassell? I honestly cannot understand this. Apart from maybe Kasper and Bamba I feel he's been our best player this season. No one else runs with the ball like he does and he never stops running! The aim of this post is not to sl*g the naysayers off but to just stick up for my little falla (No, not my infantile penis but Vassell!). I like you dear boy and want to say keep up the good work (not that you would read this or even take note if you did). Anyway, just seen a thread on Michael Johnson that's got my juices flowing so I'm back on target for an early afternoon climax followed by a crushing feeling of guilt and resentment. Why God! Why damn me with implement!?!?! Were the spots and Mr Burns style physique not enough!?!?! Rumble X
acooling08 Posted 27 September 2011 Posted 27 September 2011 I really like and I think most of our fans do. However he just can't finish! I can see the logic in wanting a striker in his place who will score (like Nugent) <--- (Also, to help you along)
Ric Flair Posted 27 September 2011 Posted 27 September 2011 His two efforts in the last 10 minutes on Sunday were truly dreadful. Having said that, his performance v Brighton was stunning.
Dan Posted 27 September 2011 Posted 27 September 2011 I think he's not bad, but not brilliant. Sven, seems to think he's brilliant. Trust me, I'll be very surprised if you see Nugent and Beckford in a 4-4-2 without Vassell being injured, just what I think Sven will do.

It's like saying so and so wins a penalty everygame....but then goes on to miss. I love his work-ethic and he does run at defences and cause them a few problems but more often than not nothing comes of it.
Dan Posted 27 September 2011 Posted 27 September 2011 Agreed with Brum, his end product, for a forward who's played for England, is simply abysmal.
David Guiza Posted 27 September 2011 Posted 27 September 2011 He's a great player at this level but like other people have said he just doesn't score enough goals. He also seems to play with blinkers on half the time, one point in the first half on Sunday he could have pulled It back to Beckford or King but didn't even seem to even see them. Also against Brighton Peltier was wide open for the 'goal' for ages yet he only released the ball once he was fouled. Saying that though I don't think many of our other players would even have made it into the positions that Vassell does.
Raj Posted 27 September 2011 Posted 27 September 2011 Blows hot and cold in my opinion(which is humble!) When we signed him i though a player of his pedigree would piss on players in this league, but hes just not lived upto my high expectations of him. He's no Julian Joachim!
RowlattsFox Posted 27 September 2011 Posted 27 September 2011 So frustrating, one minute his first touch is awful but then he'll pull a long ball out the air superbly. Definitely offers something, but agreed that the general consensus is that Beckford and Nugent should be first choice. Although I wouldn't be surprised to see Nugent, Vassell and Beckford start against Derby.
Kent Posted 27 September 2011 Posted 27 September 2011 Either way we've definitely got good options upfront now. Vassel, Nugent and Beckford are all good strikers.
Corky Posted 27 September 2011 Posted 27 September 2011 He's got excellent body strength, very rarely does he get pushed off the ball and when on form he can be very dangerous. His finishing on Sunday was poor, but his work ethic is impressive and he won't let defenders rest.
drc Posted 27 September 2011 Posted 27 September 2011 I'm pretty sure that Sven is aware that Vassel doesn't provide too many goals. But with his effort he tires the defence, they probably have to mark him (if they not just let him having a free pop knowing he can't score ) also oftenly he helps the midfeiled out in defending. Now when we have 2 more lethal attackers he probably should start as a winger or on the bench (if Nugent is fit).
The Doctor Posted 27 September 2011 Posted 27 September 2011 I think he's sort of similar to Heskey - he won't get you goals, nor will he directly create them but just his presence on the pitch creates chances for other players.
smudgerfox Posted 27 September 2011 Posted 27 September 2011 5 goals in 38 appearances 3 assists in 38 appearances that's a significant intervention once every four and a half games even if you regard him as an attacking midfielder rather than a striker, that's way short of the mark any team relying on a forward with that kind of strike rate is going nowhere what you think of his dribbling skills, pace, energy, body strength, ball control are all rendered irrelevant by those stats
Thracian Posted 27 September 2011 Posted 27 September 2011 I think he's sort of similar to Heskey - he won't get you goals, nor will he directly create them but just his presence on the pitch creates chances for other players. That's about right and I quite rate his footballing ability myself. But i wouldn't keep him other than as back up. His career record doesn't suggest he'll ever score enough as a striker and he just doesn't make enough happen for a winger. I did wonder if Sven might get more out of him because I see no reason he couldn't score or make more goals but does either Sven or our coaches improve any of our attackers, let alone the wingers? Damned hard to make a case for it. So if he's not going to get any better we're certainly going to need more outcome from the shirt. The same goes for Dyer. But with Sven not using Dyer it means we're not using anyone with any purpose out wide and the result is the sort of indifferent almost anaesthatised performance we gave at Cardiff. I said we couldn't seem to commit ourselves completely to the task of winning and so it proved. Trouble is it's hard to imagine what winger would want to come to the winger's graveyard that is Leicester. Sven, like successive managers, doesn't seem to like wingers so why would anyone any good risk their career to be a bit-part player like Dyer? In a footballing sense i mean!
Fox92 Posted 27 September 2011 Posted 27 September 2011 I like Vassell. I think he has been our most consistant player, and in my opinion hasn't had a bad game or done anything wrong since signing. Works hard, has quick feet, good at taking players on, he's fast and versatile. Has been playing wide for most of his career, which I think is alright, he looks dangerous in that position, but can also drop in his natural position of a centre forward. When he gets the right service, his finishing can be good; for example away at Hull last season when he recieved a sensational ball from Wellens and provided us with a sensational finish. He gets unfair treatment sometimes. I think he is one of our most important players. His two efforts in the last 10 minutes on Sunday were truly dreadful. What else could he have done with the header that hit the bar? He just flicked it on, most times that will go in and sometimes it will hit the bar and go over. I'd be more worried if he wasn't in that position to hit the bar.

VASSELL OUT!

Rumble X The only problem with Vassel running with the ball is that he wont pass it so it is just a waste of his breath
Trav Le Bleu Posted 27 September 2011 Posted 27 September 2011 He's one of our best players. It's only the ridiculous misconception that he's a striker because he got a hatful once upon a time which hangs around his neck as a lead weight of expectation put there by fans. Top player, but not the source of goalage.
Corky Posted 27 September 2011 Posted 27 September 2011 5 goals in 38 appearances 3 assists in 38 appearances that's a significant intervention once every four and a half games even if you regard him as an attacking midfielder rather than a striker, that's way short of the mark any team relying on a forward with that kind of strike rate is going nowhere what you think of his dribbling skills, pace, energy, body strength, ball control are all rendered irrelevant by those stats They are direct influences though. He may have played a part in the build-up without getting the goal or final pass.
Rhysm Posted 28 September 2011 Posted 28 September 2011 I didn t think much to him until I realised how much we missed him when he was suspended this season.
RumbleFox Posted 28 September 2011 Author Posted 28 September 2011 I didn t think much to him until I realised how much we missed him when he was suspended this season. Exactly this. He definitely creates space for others and can keep the ball. I know people think this is useless but sometimes just being able to retain possession for a wee bit is invaluable.
