Jace Posted 11 October 2011 Posted 11 October 2011 source Daily Mail Online West Ham's deal to take over the Olympic Stadium has dramatically collapsed. The Hammers and Newham Council had agreed a move to into the arena after next summer's Games. But the Government has now pulled the plug after legal challenges by Tottenham and Leyton Orient, plus an anonymous complaint to the European Commission, led to fears that court action could drag on for years while the stadium remains empty. Nearing completion: An aerial view of the Olympic Stadium in Stratford A ministerial statement is expected today that will confirm that the stadium will remain in public ownership and will be leased out to an anchor tenant following a new tender process. That would mean a similar deal to the one Manchester City set up with the Commonwealth Games stadium after 2002. It is likely that under the new tender process any costs of transforming the stadium after the 2012 Games will be covered by the Olympic Park Legacy Company. Prospective tenants will then be asked to bid for the stadium with the running track remaining in place. All smiles: West Ham pose outside the 2012 stadium after their initial victory The tenants would pay an annual rent to the OPLC which could actually prove to be less costly for the likes of West Ham. The move will also remove uncertainty over the stadium ahead of London's bid for the 2017 world athletics championships, although that was not a major consideration in the decision to abandon the current deal. The Government, the London Mayor's office and the OPLC have moved to scrap the current deal in order to try to end the legal challenges over the stadium's ownership. Grand designs: Spurs have plans for redeveloping White Hart Lane as well as the Olympic Stadium There has been an anonymous complaint to the European Commission, claiming that the £40million being provided by Newham to West Ham represented 'state aid'. That complaint was regarded with particular concern with worries that it could take years to come to a conclusion. There were also fears that the application for a judicial review by Spurs and Orient could drag on and even if their bids failed they could appeal. It is understood that no contract has been signed with West Ham, allowing the move to a fresh tender process, but the club will be encouraged to bid again.
KIRBYFOX93 Posted 11 October 2011 Posted 11 October 2011 I know this is nothing to do with leicester but from westhams point of view, why would they want that ground??? For one its too big as they only just fill upton park so buildin a new ground would be ludicrous!!!! Two, you can't see the pitch without binochulars as the running track is in between the pitch and stand. And three the atmosphere they generate is much better at Upton park compared to this plastic ground which will be half empty every game.... Thoughts? Up the blues
fadedfox Posted 11 October 2011 Posted 11 October 2011 No they dont! West Ham have a massive fan base, 3 weeks ago they had the FOURTH highest attendance in the country according to the times, which is absolutely incredible given that they are currently in thee championship. According to the article they have have near 1 million subscribers to their website. Getting that stadium would increase their revenue substantially and take them to the next level, Gold and Sullivan are very astute businessmen and realise this. Arsene Wenger has publicly said that the thought of West Ham going to Stratford terrifies him, he clearly knows the potential of the club.
Jon the Hat Posted 11 October 2011 Posted 11 October 2011 Seems sensible to me. If what you are doing looks doomed to drag on for years and then eventually fail, stopping negotiations, simplifying the process and starting again is clearly the correct decision. The post-mortem on the failed process is a separate question.
wellyfox Posted 11 October 2011 Posted 11 October 2011 What gets me the most (and not that I care about wetspam). What the fvck has it to do with Europe what we do with it. They have proved they don't know what the fvck they are doing. Then try to tell others what to do. Good idea one currency then when one state fvcks up it can take the rest too. And possibly others that don't want one currency. On the way back from afganistan we should drop all unspent ammo on em. I got no love as i said for Wham and hope they don't get it. But what the fvck is it to do with Europe. Has Fvcked my day up ankers. Rant over
Jace Posted 11 October 2011 Author Posted 11 October 2011 its not great for football Juventus knocked down their stadium because it was too far away from the pitch with the running track and lacked atmosphere and then redeveloped it to be alot smaller, Tottenham had the right idea by developing the stadium further to be designed for just football like Manchester City did
Fox92 Posted 11 October 2011 Posted 11 October 2011 I was watching a program the other day which stated that West Ham are the home of football, and I think I agree. I have a soft spot for West Ham. They have created so many good players for the game, it is sensational. Their youth system is second to none, they have a fantastic history, a massive fan base and from a football fan point of view; it would have been sad to see them leave Upton Park. which is a beautiful ground in my opinion.
The Year Of The Fox Posted 11 October 2011 Posted 11 October 2011 Feel sorry for west ham fans. no proper football fan would want a ground like that. Think how bad rotherhams is.
Corky Posted 11 October 2011 Posted 11 October 2011 No they dont! Jace Posted 11 October 2011 Author Posted 11 October 2011 Don't we have around 600k supporters? Yet we don't want our ground increased by 12k. concidering we sold out easy at home to Scunthorpe when we were in the 3rd tier of English football before Leicester fans had even heard of the wealth of King Power you would think we might need to look to increase if we were promoted to the Premiership

Bugg Posted 11 October 2011 Posted 11 October 2011 its not great for football Juventus knocked down their stadium because it was too far away from the pitch with the running track and lacked atmosphere and then redeveloped it to be alot smaller, Tottenham had the right idea by developing the stadium further to be designed for just football like Manchester City did Didn't Tottenham also offer to build a new athletics stadium after they'd redeveloped the Olympic stadium? It seemed like a much better bid to me.
Jace Posted 11 October 2011 Author Posted 11 October 2011 Didn't Tottenham also offer to build a new athletics stadium after they'd redeveloped the Olympic stadium? It seemed like a much better bid to me. Yeah agreed think Tottenham had a much better bid and did offer something like that think West Ham won the original bid due to willingness to keep the track and their closer East London location
Trav Le Bleu Posted 11 October 2011 Posted 11 October 2011 All I can say is I hope Spurs are happy that we're left paying for this white elephant! So, since we - the tax paying public - own the ground, can't we just have a vote on it? I'm saying Orient just out of spite.
MC Prussian Posted 12 October 2011 Posted 12 October 2011 Yep, give it to Leyton Orient. Although the Matchroom Stadium looks like one of those old-school venues that are hard to replace. And let Tottenham and West Ham tear each other up over losing the bid.
davieG Posted 12 October 2011 Posted 12 October 2011 I'm guessing there's not many fans of WHU or Spurs that are keen on moving their certainly my Spurs supporting nephew hates the idea. We should tell them they can have it as long as they share. Alternatively it should be offered to MK Dons, they're due a move aren't they. The OlympicDons
Part Of The Crowd Posted 14 October 2011 Posted 14 October 2011 **** off! We've already been in London, we need somewhere fresh. Isle Of Wight Dons, IOW Dons for short.
Jaspa Posted 14 October 2011 Posted 14 October 2011 Saw this comin a mile off. That site is to be too big of history to be given to a footie club
Jace Posted 14 October 2011 Author Posted 14 October 2011 Yes, we should it out 'easily' to Scunthorpe we was only getting the League One trophy that day.... Imagine how big an attendance we could sell out if we had the Premiership trophy at the King Power Stadium? we would need the fixture list to give us a home match to a team from Manchester last game of the season though
Webbo Posted 9 November 2011 Posted 9 November 2011 My link A 29-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of fraud today after allegations that Tottenham spied on Olympics officials during their stadium bid.The arrest came as Olympic Park Legacy Company (OPLC) chairwoman Baroness Ford claimed the north London club had all 14 members of her board monitored by private investigators. The suspect was being questioned this afternoon as officers conducted a string of searches in Sussex, Sutton, south west London, and Westminster. Spurs have denied putting officials under surveillance. Detectives, who have been investigating the claims since August 2011 "following allegations by West Ham and the Olympic Park Legacy Company in respect of the unlawful obtaining of information", said the suspect was arrested at an address in Sussex. He was taken into custody at a Sussex police station "where he remains", a spokesman said.
