Nickfosse Posted 1 January 2012 Posted 1 January 2012 I went to see Donny play Grimsby in a pre-season friendly (OK not the most competitive match) but did a "player watch" on him as we were looking for a striker at the time and one or two had mentioned him. I think it was Col City fan who was particularly keen. What interested me most was how well he played up front in a 4-5-1. He didn't win any flick ons but that is worthless if you have no-one running beyond any way. What he did do well was that the ball "stuck" with him and he showed excellent touch, vision and passing skill to link play very effectively. He then scored his goal by getting free between the 2 CD's, something we know he can do to our cost. I think this is important because several have said he is no better than what we have. As others have outlined, Beckford does not have the footballing skill or awareness to play without a partner, though I think he has the capacity to be a decent goalscorer when he is in form (which clearly we haven't witnessed so far). His two fine strikes against Blackpool and the post strike against Posh would suggest he has that in him, not to mention his record at Leeds, and to an extent Everton. Nugent has done alright for us so far, but again, I'm not sure that he is able link play as well as Sharp. What Sharp could do is give us the option to play in different ways which could be more effective than our efforts so far this season. I worry that a 442 exposes our weak CM and that any other system does not really suit our forward players, particularly in the role I saw Sharp fulfill so well.
Guest parky0607 Posted 1 January 2012 Posted 1 January 2012 i wonder if this is going to be the next 'nicky maynard' style saga?
Soar Fox Posted 2 January 2012 Posted 2 January 2012 Rumour has it, West Ham have activated his release clause.
Callabinho Posted 2 January 2012 Posted 2 January 2012 Wast ham have placed a bid, that probably signals Coles exit, and removes us from the equation!!
bluearmyfox23 Posted 2 January 2012 Posted 2 January 2012 We have no chance if west ham have bid but wouldnt mind piquinne from them he could be a cheap target man ? He has always impressed me when I have watched him !!
Soar Fox Posted 2 January 2012 Posted 2 January 2012 £1.85m clause activated by the Hammers. Do you know how much we bid for him?
EnderbyFox Posted 2 January 2012 Posted 2 January 2012 That's us fooked then, there is no way someone would rather join our club if they have the option of West Ham. The only thing that gives me a glimmer of hope is that they already have a few strikers such as Piquionne, Cole, Baldock, Seers, Carew May not be guaranteed first team football there?
Libertine Dream Posted 2 January 2012 Posted 2 January 2012 We may aswell still activate the clause ourselves and then let him decide either way. At least then we can say we tried or could stilll get him.
Criggers Posted 2 January 2012 Posted 2 January 2012 That's us fooked then, there is no way someone would rather join our club than West Ham. That's not true. I would join our club rather than West Ham. Because in my eyes we're the greatest club in the world But then I've never even played Sunday League! If you meant that no professional footballer in their right mind would join us rather than West Ham, I would be inclined to agree with you (at this moment in time)...
bluearmyfox23 Posted 2 January 2012 Posted 2 January 2012 Oh yeah deffentley still make the offer but the only way I can see us getting him is if we can offer him first team football? West ham have a lot of strikers already and might want him for rotation?
m00nie Posted 2 January 2012 Posted 2 January 2012 theres other factors also. location for one. he may not want to move so far south.
MPH Posted 2 January 2012 Posted 2 January 2012 So... who will pay him the most wages.... us or West Ham?
dannythefox Posted 2 January 2012 Posted 2 January 2012 People needs to stop saying we have no chance if he wants to stay local we have a very good chance of getting him. If he wants to go to west ham fair enough but he turned down Southampton in the summer because he wanted to stay in Sheffield with his family! Question: were does it say the hammers have made a bid? because I cant find it anywhere.

If we wanted him that badly why didn't we activate the release clause straight away?

dannythefox Posted 2 January 2012 Posted 2 January 2012 If we wanted him that badly why didn't we activate the release clause straight away? His release clause is 3m not 1.85m. In my opinion were probably just testing the water.
Callabinho Posted 2 January 2012 Posted 2 January 2012 I know I'm not best mates with him, but I don't think Sharp is the type of player who chases dreams e.g monster wages, he wants to be fairly local so Hull and Leeds stand a pretty good chance, he may decide to stay of course until the end of the season!

I agree with this but I would be surprised if Leeds or Hull would splash 3.5-4m on him.
teblin Posted 2 January 2012 Posted 2 January 2012 If the rumours are true that he doesn't want to leave Sheffield, he won't be going to west ham!
Happy Fox Posted 2 January 2012 Posted 2 January 2012 He wants a prem move so cannot see him moving to another championship team.
DorsetFox9 Posted 2 January 2012 Posted 2 January 2012 JanuaryTRANSFER Peter Miles Location sounds like it could be a problem for #whufc with regards to signing Billy Sharp. Hull the ideal destination. #drfc #hcfc
bluearmyfox23 Posted 2 January 2012 Posted 2 January 2012 Hull is the ideal destination but hull have came out saying they won't pay 3m, bu If they do want him that badly they would have to cash in on one of there players ?!

I thought he had a release clause, saying he could leave for 1.8 million in january. So they wouldn`t have to pay 3 million if true.
