I think this guy is another example of a player who was showing quality at his previous club and can't perform here for whatever reason - something is wrong, possibly in the changing room (sorry Babs but the Wellens day off story suggests something sinister) but it does seem strange that some guys like Beckford, Danns, St ledger, Pantsil, Fernandes and Abe can't get in the team and have all turned crap - only thing more frustrating is when we move them all on and they will become good players again in all liklihood

Having a Reserve team in a League, rather than occasional friendlies can't help those not making the starting 11 establish any kind of form. They may not have played a game for several weeks and then are expected to turn a game in a quick 10 minutes

why dont we play this guy in CM ? When he came down here last season with palace he was brillliant and i remember thinking what a good player he was hes being wasted alright he hasnt played great i can only remember him playing really well against forest and derby but apart from that hes being watsted and lets face it he cant be any worse then wellens atm

Because he is utter wank and can't run with the ball without tripping over it.

What are you talking about? Players reaching a certain age have for a long time been looked after slightly differently. I see nobody seems to think there is something sinister in the fact Konchesky is also being treated to the odd Monday off from training to give his body a rest?

No only bully boy Wellens, who according to some seems to rule the club above the last three managers and two boards.

There is a difference though. Konch is playing with all the energy and enthusiasm of a colt while Wellens seems to be progressively more laborious and has not consistently shown he's got 90 minutes in him all season.

maybe if we gave Wellens 2 or 3 days off a week, his on field dynamism might improve?

The problem is not in the changing room it is on the pitch, footy is a team game and when a team is playing poorly it doesn't matter how good you are you get sucked in to it, nobody, not even Wellens, is a bad player, but when the team is playing with no confidence, no continuity and no belief it makes coming in to the team much harder.

The fact is that our confidence is so fragile after Sven that despite a good start under NP the Hull game knocked us back, losing Mills when he was just getting back to playing with Bamba and having a solid back four, Beckford starting to look good gets hauled off for a defender not looked the same since then. Danns getting his first start under NP is all of sudden finding himself playing in a team a man down out of position and under pressure to perform. Coupled with the fact that we actually put in a good performace with 10 men and then got nothing out of it the confidence has looked shot since then, and the repercussions of Mills' red card are still being felt today with SSL unhappy that after not doing much wrong during Mills' suspension he gets dropped and not even on the bench as soon as Mills is back, he has now supposedly put in a transfer request.

January is going to be a very important month for this club, we need a few quality signings and to rebuild confidence, what we really need more than anything is a leader on the pitch, I don't who there is out there but some of the young exciting talents that people want are just going to get sucked in to the mire, we need strong experienced characters, I am going to throw this name out there, Alan Smith, not getting a look in at Newcastle linked with Leeds not that long ago, he would add bite to the midfield and a goal threat as well as experience and Leadership, he is 31 but I bet he can manage to train all week.

Goal threat? His last league goal was in 2005!! lol

Leeds were interested in taking him back but wouldn't match his wages at Newcastle. So he'd rather stay there and see out his contract.

Hardly the kind of player we want or need right now.

So playing on the wing means he can no longer pass, control and gets caught on the ball all the time. But none of that would happen if he played in the middle? Come on. He was played tucked in anyway under Sven and not even playing as a proper wide man!

I'm sure they would using your logic of someone playing out of position suddenly means they lose all ability to do the basics of football.

I've tried these excuses when I've played badly.

Should think he is, without a combatitive midfielder who can dominate play, he's having to try (and failing) do it all.

How many other team's playmakers have to do their own winning of the ball for 90mins?

King is anonymous & can't hide behind his goals this season as he isn't scoring any, Danns is still an unknown quantity with nothing in the way of consistency & Abe is like an annoying mosquito flying around annoying the opposition but not suited physically to winning the ball on a consistent basis (lovely footballer sometimes though, just limited in the rough&tough of the Championship game by his natural Far Eastern physique or lack thereof) Johnson has been an unmitigated disaster, which means Wellens is carrying the can for something very very wrong with the team going back to the summer. Yes, he's playing poorly, yes he shouldn't be in the team, yes on occasion the energy of Danns helped King and the team played well in patches Vs Palace, but the wheels fell off that with forest dominating the 1st 45mins in the cup game.

The midfield needs strengthening, Wellens included but ignoring the fact that everyone else is shit too is odd to say the least.

I am surprised by that, he used to be a striker, maybe he is not the answer, but we lack that type of a player and personality at the club, we need someone with experience and ability and he was always one to pay with passion, sometimes a bit too much. I wouldn't want anyone on a pay day, but he is only 30, 31, a lot more playing left and he can't enjoy not making the bench. The summer was different Leeds wanted him but he had played 14 games for Newcastle in the premiership, this season he hasn't had a sniff. I reckon he could well be on the move, within our budget and would bolster the midfield, more combative than creative, but prem quality, and has the experience we need in getting out of this division.

Edit: I only just saw that article, dirty Dannsing anyone?

Very fair comment, attire in them pics is pretty worrying.

That god awful chav tattoo he has has sent him him down in my estimations, I dread to think what is says.

I had openly said i wasn't a Neil Danns fan in the past, but i wish to eat my own words. Really impressed with him lately, especially tonight. Well done to him.

He has now taken his chance, which is what he had failed to do before. Well done Neil very good performance.

big fan of his and happy he's finally getting a chance in his natural position. definitely needs to be one of the two in the centre of midfield from now on!
