Derby fans "crossed the line"

So at the Derby vs Nottingham Forest game tonight, many home fans are reported to have been singing songs such as "Where's your chairman gone?" and "Going down like your chairman".

Obviously these are totally disrespectful to Nigel Doughty, and his family, who devoted his life to Forest.

I don't think anyone will be too surprised to hear this though. So do we think it should be shrugged off and dismissed as banter? A lot of Derby fans on twitter seem to think so, and unsurprisingly Forest fans feel the complete opposite. Every club has a minority of fans who will find these sorts of songs acceptable, but do you think action should be taken against it? I don't think anything will be done this time. Racist chants for example, are enough to get you arrested and a life ban, but these sorts of things will probably barely get looked at.

Opinions?

That is disgusting if true.

We all hate the Forest but there's no need for that, especially when the people who are going to be offended the most are those who have nothing to do with either club (ie. his family).

Nothing can really be done about it, just that the Sheep Shaggers will go down even further in everyone's estimations.

Not like our fans have sung "Nigel, where's your dad" at Nigel Clough.

Why the hell do our fans always try and take the higher ground when we have a ridiculous minority of fans who sing crap like that too?

I was thinking of that chant to when I wrote this post. I was t going to write out every innappropriate chant I could think of but this one is included when I talk about unnacceptable songs. I don't think the one about Clough is any better than anything heard at pride park tonight. All clubs do have the morons yes, and I'm nowhere near make enough to think that we aren't included in that.

Maybe it was that bunch of forrest fans that cheered when his death was announced on SSN popping up again....

As a few have already said....but there are always a few idiot fan at every club. the ones who cross the line and think its fine.

I hope these fans who did chant this get banned or something...just isnt on.

Apparently there was a really large number of fans chanting this. More so than the morons that chant Brian Clough. I'm not condoning it or saying they're worse than us, because they're both equally sick. It just seems to be quite popular as it was meant to be their whole singing section blurting it out.

The chants were clearly audible to fans listening to the radio commentary, which has just been played on TV news.

Credit to Derby for issuing an immediate apology and condemning those responsible. Hope other clubs will take note.

Derby County have issued a formal apology after a section of their fans sang "insensitive and distasteful" songs about the late Nottingham Forest owner Nigel Doughty during Tuesday's east Midlands derby at Pride Park.

The post-match talk was dominated by the chants about Doughty, who was found dead at his home at the age of 54 in February. A small section of the home support were heard to sing "where's your chairman gone?" and "you're going down with your chairman".

Derby said on Wednesday they were investigating the incident, and issued a statement reading: "Derby County Football Club wishes to formally apologise to the family of Nigel Doughty, Nottingham Forest Football Club and all supporters in attendance at Pride Park Stadium on Tuesday night for the behaviour of a small group of people.

"Some of the chants directed to opposing supporters were wholly inappropriate and damage the excellent reputation of the club and its supporters at large. The chief executive Tom Glick has already apologised to club officials at Nottingham Forest, while manager Nigel Clough made his feelings clear in post match interviews."

Glick told the club's website: "We are very disappointed that a brief moment of insensitive and distasteful chanting by a minority of supporters spoiled what was a great occasion at Pride Park Stadium last night and we do not condone the actions of those individuals in any way, shape or form.

"The vast majority of our supporters come to Pride Park to enjoy watching and cheering the Rams on to victory and generate a positive atmosphere inside the stadium. It is a shame for this majority that we today have to focus on a small group of people whose actions reflect badly on us all."

Speaking after the match, the Forest manager Steve Cotterill paid tribute to Doughty, a lifelong Forest fan who invested heavily in the club.

"People who have chanted that, they need to be ashamed. What have they done coming out to a football match tonight and singing that about Nigel Doughty? They need to be ashamed of themselves.

"God bless his soul Nigel Doughty, he was top man for this football club, one of the best chairman that has probably ever been in the Championship. Not just because of the way he funded it, but because Nottingham Forest was his life as well."

If Derby closed "chav corner" for their next home game, maybe that would bring the message home.

Don't think they'll do that though. The inhabitants of such areas are tolerated because they're seen bringing "passhun" and "atmusfear" to grounds.
