Big changes NOT required in the summer....

I read through this forum on people saying we need lots of new players. I disagree.

We've had too many players come and go in recent times mainly because we keep swapping managers. Its time we stuck with the manager and only tweak the team rather than an overhaul.

Here's my thoughts on players for next season:

GK - Schmeichel (Possibly get a new back up but i'd stick with Weale/Logan.)

RB - Peltier (A new right back to challenge Peltier as think Paintsil will be gone)

LB - Konchesky/Kennedy

CB - Bamba/Mills/SSL/Morgan/Tunch (5 x good defenders there so no need for another defensive overhaul. Work with what we have)

RM - Marshall/Gallagher

LM - Dyer (Another wide man required to challenge Dyer)

CM - Wellens/King/Drinkwater/Danns (Wellens the only questionable one there but maybe a sold defensive midfielder will help anyway)

CF - Beckford/Nugent/Schlupp/Waghorn/Vassell (5 x good strikers there inc Vassell which i know people may disagree with. He can be a good sqaud player to bring on)

In summary, i believe we need 4 players (RB, winger, centre mid, maybe keeper)

In Beckford/Nugent/Schlupp, i believe we'll cause anyone probs next season plus King/Drinkwater/Danns are all talented players.

Players like Peltier/Marshall/Mills will all be more consistent next year i believe

A right winger to back up Marshall and a left winger better than Lloyd would be my priorities.

A winger? Priority in the summer?

Not gonna happen :( !

Nigel clearly wanted more/better players in Jan but his hands were tied which he practically admitted.

Was always going to be difficult to bring in lots of players at that time considering our league position but hopefully in the summer, we'll see some positivity

No one knows what is going to happen, the changes NP should make imo : Get rid of Wellens, Gallagher, Dyer, Howard

Bring in a RB for competition with Peltier

A defensive midfielder

Two wingers : LW and a RW

Target man just to give us another outlet.

Totally agree. A moderately stable summer is what a lot of these players need.

Our biggest problem this season has once again been consistency. We can look like world beaters one day and an absolute travesty just three days later.

Consistency comes with stability.

Definitely need a new right back to challenge Peltier, Bamba/Mills/Tunchev will all leave in the summer I reckon, and I trust NP to bring in some solid CBs in the summer, LB and GK are fine, maybe better back up for Kasper like you said, need a new RM Marshall is young and no doubt a good talent, Gallys 1 game in 6 performance ratio isn't good enough for us, someone like Lawrence from Pompey would be a steady signing, Wellens will provide decent back up in CM, but we need a Hayden Mullins/Dickson Etuhu type hard man to toughen us up. Forwards are fine hopefully we can keep hold of JB and DN, Waggy is decent back up, question mark over Vassell wouldn't be too disappointed if he left, need a good LW with Dyer as back up, his lack of ability finishing/crossing wise has stood out so much this season!

Agreed with all this apart from getting rid of Dyer. He's be useful to have in some games and to stretch sides late on

Agreed totally. Look at Reading. They lost Mills and Long in the summer and have gone from strength to strength

Also agreed, nice to see a good few of us in agreement!

A decent winger on either side has been the priority for every summer for years.

Other than that I think the old "creative midfielder" needs to be signed.

After that it depends on who leaves really, because I can't see the whole squad staying together.

I don't consider Dyer to be even good enough even to be a back up he has his moments but he is far too inconsistent, what I would like to see is a new LW and Vassell as back up.

In terms of forward minded central midfielders I honestly think we're sorted. King will hopefully get back to his old form under Pearson, I think it's far too soon to write him off. Drinkwater looks like an excellent catch and Danns has shown he can be a real asset. If anything I think we actually need a spoiler in the centre of the park, someone to break up the play and give the opposition's creative types something to think about.

OUT (of the first team): Wellens, Gallagher, Dyer

OUT (altogether): Howard, Tunchev, Paintsil

IN: Koren, Powell (Crewe), Vardy, Chester, Stewart

Main midfield Options of Marshall, King, Koren, Danns, Drinkwater, Wellens, Stewart, Dyer and another young player like Powell to develop sounds good enough to me

Whilst it's a good post, I think there'll be some surprise, unpopular changes.

The defence needs work, not huge work, but some tweaks, I think all the players on high wages will be off, and I mean stupidly high like Mills & Beckford supposedly are.

Left backs are fine I agree, right backs... Peltier can stay, Pantsil will be off and I suspect we'll get someone else in, probably a similar kind of signing to Peltier, unpredictable.

Centre midfield needs work, without a doubt. I'm a big fan of Drinkwater, Danns has grown on me and Wellens, I was a big fan before but even the biggest Wellens fan can admit it's been a weak year from him, the same applies for King, adding his injury to that of course. Think we could do with a real midfield dynamo.

Our wings are still simply not good enough, Marshall in the two sub appearances has shown exactly what I'd like to see from a right winger, enthusiasm and actual quality end product, much more like it. Dyer should be a sub, he's raw pace and very little else. Gallagher, we can do better. Simple as that. Another winger needed who can probably play both sides.

Up front, meh, we've improved to be fair. Nugent is a definite to stay I reckon, Beckford I'm still sure won't be here in August, Schlupp is a good squad player for us, Waghorn... depends if he can get back to the form he was on, wouldn't rule out loaning him out. Howard will probably be moved on.

I'd expect in;

- A back-up goalkeeper. Probably a youngster in the mould of David Martin before.

- Another right back. Similar to Peltier but to provide better competition.

- Another centre half. Again probably a youngster from the Premier like Hobbs/Chester were.

- Another winger who can play both sides. I reckon we'll go back in for Cameron Stewart.

- A dominant centre midfielder. One with genuine strength and quality, should be our biggest money signing of the summer.

- A more mobile target man. I said it before but I think we could do worse than Blackstock.

- Jamie Vardy. I just think it'll happen and I think he'd be a success for us, I really do.

Out;

Weale, Pantsil, Mills, Beckford, Howard, other reserve players. That's just what I can see happening. Maybe a couple of other surprise sellings.

I think this all comes down to the 'time to gel as a squad', 'short termist' stuff..

If, by definition, you feel that consistency is the name of the game then you would change very few players, if any actually?

If you feel that the existing crop, pound for pound, is not gonna be good enough to get us promotion you'd be looking to make some key changes.

I think I'd make one or two and that's it.

Don't forget, what we've had, so far, has resulted in twelfth place.

Just to keep in mind, these are the players out of contract in the summer: Weale, Logan, Vassell, Howard, Oakley & Tunchev

We need..

GK - a back-up keeper, both Weale and Logan are out of contract in the summer. Maybe Weale's will be renewed. Lowish priority though, we have Smith if desperate.

RB - Some competition for Peltier... Moore could fill this role but perhaps too much pressure for him at the moment.

CB - Depends on who leaves. Tunch is out of contract. If we manage to keep St Ledger, Morgan, Mills and Bamba we might not need anyone else.

Winger - preferably versatile so can play either side.

Central Midfield - need a younger Wellens (I think he can still do a job for us in the squad but we need to be looking for replacements for the future)

Striker - as Howard will be leaving we might need a target man just to offer some variety to our attack, but really this is the area of the pitch where we are most sorted.

So to my mind that's 4/5 players, obviously rising if we lose some players we don't want to lose. Not a massive turnover which to my mind is for the best as we really just need tweaking here and there rather than wholesale changes.

Would tend to agree. Think we can learn a lot from the extensive changes of recent years and whilst on paper it is exciting, doesnt necessarily bring the desired effect. Stability would be key. 3 players for me with a couple being moved on as well. Midfield is generally ok, maybe one addition, whilst attack is i believe sound. Would look at a couple to add to the defence with general supportive progression from acadamy ranks.

Disagree with the majority on here....... :/

I think we need a huge reorganisation, for financial as well as football reasons.

Financial Fair Play means that all our big earners come under threat, I can see Mills, SSL, Konchesky, Danns, Beckford, maybe even Nugent all on their way for financial reasons, assuming we can find buyers of course!

For football reasons there will be other exits, Weale, Pantsil, Bamba, Howard, Vassell and hopefully Gallagher and Wellens too.

I would be very annoyed if Beckford, Nugent, Kasper and Konchesky go because if they do our chance of getting promotion becomes slimmer. But I have a gut feeling as Marbella alludes to that because of FFP those players will need to go? it is a dilemma.

Someone to replace Peltier, wellens and gally in the starting 11. Marshall should start from now with danns, ,drinkwater and king in the midfield when he's fit.

They already have two strikes against them in NFP's mind.....

They are expensive,................ and they are Sven's signings...

You might not mind as much, but for the same reasons Mills and SSL could be on their way too!

A hard tackling ball winning midfielder would be my no1 target, someone to sit in front of the back 4 and give them a bit of protection, and add a bit of steel to our fragile side.

I look at the squad and think its quite strong thats why its so difficult to work out why we are so inconsistent, but surely no big changes are required.

Posted

I think its generally agreed that we need wingers still. Competition for Marshall and someone ahead of Dyer.

Basically we need Cameron Stewart and Jimmy Kebe. Or maybe Robbie Brady.

Pantsil is fine as a squad player to back up Peltier. Smith is fine for Kasper, worst case we'd get a loan in if Kasper got injured.

I think Drinkwater and Danns will be the starting CM's need season with Wellens as a squad player and King pushing for a place when he returns from injury. I'd like to see an anchor man or defensive midfield enforcer brought in but that's it.

A starting line up of Kasper, Peltier, SSL, Morgan, Konch, Stewart, Danns, Drinkwater, Kebe, Nugent, Beckford given time to hit form and become consistent would be devastating in this league. A bench of Bamba, Marshall, King, Schlupp and Smith or Vassell would be top notch as well.

Realistically Mills could well leave, Moussa should certainly. Weale, Howard and Logan will be released. Waghorn is a possible leaver too.
