Early doors was Hilliarius, just a basic comedy done well. Parks and Rec and the US office never fail to deliver great laughs and very entertaining comedy.

Posted 13 April 2012 Posted 13 April 2012 I thought it was great I don't think it was helped by the fact it was Ricky Gervais gurning the whole time, maybe if he had written it for someone other than him and Karl Pilkington it might have been better, but to be honest I didn't find it funny and in the wake of the whole "disabled" storm on twitter seemed cynical and had an agenda, either to prove that despite using the word disabled he can write something sensitive and caring towards the mentally disabled, or to prove that you can laugh at them. I'm really not sure which one it was, but it certainly wasn't funny, so much so I switched over to the Sarah Millican show and that actually seemed funny by comparison, that soon wore off and I went to bed.

I actually thought it was pretty accurate. I have seen a lot of "care" homes in my job and the characters in the show were fairly cock-on in the portrayal of them. I was concerned that it would be hard to watch because it could poke fun at those with any disability but in fact, I thought Derek was portrayed sensitively by Ricky Gervais and Karl Pilkingtons character was sympathetic and the humour comes from his exasperation at the life they all have to lead, both those who have a disablity and the ones who care for them. I felt Pilkingtons character genuinely cared about the people but also showed he is only human. I don't think the show is meant to be funny, but more to show that all people have quirks and irregularities in any walk of life and to those of us looking from the outside in, they can appear daft. If you or I find those quirks funny or amusing, it's because they're real, there can be daft situations involving mental disabilities and it's the siuation and how it arises or is dealt with that's funny, not the people involved. At no time did I feel we were being invited to mock. There were parts of the show that brought a lump to my throat because they made me feel so sad for Derek which brought a lot of sympathy for those his character reflects.

I found all the characters funny, apart from the elderly of course. The bloke who hates his job and life, the one who hung around because he had nothing better to do, the carer who didn't have much of a life because she wanted to care but was full of anger and Derek the bloke full of misplaced love, genuine love but prone to mishaps. All similar to people I have met over the years and all who live in their own little 'kingdom' as they did. I thought the way the comedy and tragedy was brought together was clever too.
