Leicesterpool Posted 18 April 2012 Posted 18 April 2012 God save the queen isn't England;s anthem it's the British anthem, I've believe is time to play Land Of Hope and Glory or Jerusalem. I've chosen Jerusalem because when I hear that, it makes me feel proud to English. However Land Of Hope and glory makes me feel proud aswell.
Guest MattP Posted 18 April 2012 Posted 18 April 2012 Jerusalem all day long. Sounds fantastic when the cricketers come out and we need to claim it back from those bastards at the WI.
marko Posted 18 April 2012 Posted 18 April 2012 Jerusalem all day long. Sounds fantastic when the cricketers come out and we need to claim it back from those bastards at the WI. Exactly this. The singing of Jerusalem is one of my favourite parts of going to Test matches.
ScouseFox Posted 18 April 2012 Posted 18 April 2012 Jerusalem by a mile. Great anthem. Loads of passion.
BlueSi13 Posted 18 April 2012 Posted 18 April 2012 Jerusalem for me aswell, stunningly beautiful. Also a big fan of Nimrod....though with no lyrics it would be hard to sell.
ousefox Posted 18 April 2012 Posted 18 April 2012 I could never sing the national anthem because i don't believe in god or in having a monarchy..so yeah, anything but that!
DB11 Posted 18 April 2012 Posted 18 April 2012 Are you serious? I should clarify, that I've never heard/listened to either of them. I've never even heard of Jerusalem being an anthem/song, although I have heard of 'Land Of Hope and Glory' as being music but, prior to this thread, could not tell you what relevance it had and would have assumed it was just a hymn from Church.
I am Rod Hull Posted 18 April 2012 Posted 18 April 2012 God save the Queen... (give it a try, you might like it) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bz8rHeJ3FAk
ozleicester Posted 19 April 2012 Posted 19 April 2012 Not a believer in God, and not particualarly a fan of the Monarchy, so GSTQ doesnt fit...except, my lifes emotion is tied to it, so i still feel the heart pound when its played or sung.
The Doctor Posted 19 April 2012 Posted 19 April 2012 God save the Queen... (give it a try, you might like it) Can't see why anyone wouldn't want that, you should have an anthem that accurately reflects the country though:
davieG Posted 19 April 2012 Posted 19 April 2012 1. God save our gracious Queen Long live our noble QueenGod save the QueenSend her victoriousHappy and gloriousLong to reign over usGod save the Queen 2. O Lord our God arise Scatter her enemiesAnd make them fallConfound their politicsFrustrate their knavish tricksOn Thee our hopes we fixGod save us all 3. Thy choicest gifts in store On her be pleased to pourLong may she reignMay she defend our lawsAnd ever give us causeTo sing with heart and voiceGod save the Queen 4. Not in this land alone But be God's mercies knownFrom shore to shoreLord make the nations seeThat men should brothers beAnd form one familyThe wide world over 5. From every latent foe From the assassins blowGod save the QueenO'er her thine arm extendFor Britain's sake defendOur mother, prince, and friendGod save the Queen 6. Lord grant that Marshal Wade May by thy mighty aidVictory bringMay he sedition hushAnd like a torrent rushRebellious Scots to crushGod save the King Jerusalem HymnAnd did those feet in ancient timeWalk upon England's mountain green? And was the holy Lamb of GodOn England's pleasant pastures seen? And did the countenance divineShine forth upon our clouded hills? And was Jerusalem builded hereAmong those dark satanic mills?Bring me my bow of burning gold!Bring me my arrows of desire!Bring me my spear! O clouds, unfold!Bring me my chariot of fire!I will not cease from mental fight,Nor shall my sword sleep in my hand,Till we have built JerusalemIn England's green and pleasant land. Land of Hope and Glory LyricsLand of Hope and Glory, Mother of the Free,How shall we extol thee, who are born of thee?Wider still, and wider, shall thy bounds be set;God, who made thee mighty, make thee mightier yet!Truth and Right and Freedom, each a holy gem,Stars of solemn brightness, weave thy diadem.Tho' thy way be darkened, still in splendour drest,As the star that trembles o'er the liquid West.Throned amid the billows, throned inviolate,Thou hast reigned victorious, thou has smiled at fate.Land of Hope and Glory, fortress of the Free,How may we extol thee, praise thee, honour thee?Hark, a mighty nation maketh glad reply;Lo, our lips are thankful, lo, our hearts are high!Hearts in hope uplifted, loyal lips that sing;Strong in faith and freedom, we have crowned our King!
Trav Le Bleu Posted 19 April 2012 Posted 19 April 2012 I should clarify, that I've never heard/listened to either of them. I've never even heard of Jerusalem being an anthem/song, although I have heard of 'Land Of Hope and Glory' as being music but, prior to this thread, could not tell you what relevance it had and would have assumed it was just a hymn from Church. No, that's Jerusalem, which is why it shoudln't be the national anthem.
Guest MattP Posted 19 April 2012 Posted 19 April 2012 Lord grant that Marshal Wade May by thy mighty aid Victory bring May he sedition hush And like a torrent rush Rebellious Scots to crush God save the Queen If we sang that verse I'd change my vote.
topharry123 Posted 25 April 2012 Posted 25 April 2012 God Save the Queen all the way. The other two have their place in the grounds, but GSTQ is what I have grown up with and whenever it is sung it gives me an immense sense of pride and makes me forget about everything else apart from supporting my country.
Manwell Pablo Posted 25 April 2012 Posted 25 April 2012 Think we are all missing the obvious choice here, Fat Les, Vindaloo.
Corky Posted 25 April 2012 Posted 25 April 2012 Think we are all missing the obvious choice here, Fat Les, Vindaloo. Where on earth are you from, we're from In-ger-land, where you come from, do you put the kettle on? Too right it should be the national anthem of Our Great Country.
Leicesterpool Posted 25 April 2012 Author Posted 25 April 2012 God save the queen is the british anthem not the english anthem, plus scotland and wales are allowed there own anthems.
Manwell Pablo Posted 25 April 2012 Posted 25 April 2012 Where on earth are you from, we're from In-ger-land, where you come from, do you put the kettle on? Too right it should be the national anthem of Our Great Country. Indeed, in what other Lyric could you capture the typical English view on foriegners. The song also captures the importance of Family in England, as Keith takes "his Mum and his Dad and his Gran" to Waterloo, reference to the Duke of Wellingtons famous victory over Napoleon, another fine part of English history. On top of this I feel the recurring mention of Vinderloo really capture an image of modern day multi cultural England. Lets stop poxing about and get a proper anthem.
Kitchandro Posted 25 April 2012 Posted 25 April 2012 I always thought I vow to thee my country was the most inspiring and beautiful tune. Failing that I also vote for Vindaloo.
