Yep but we managed to score goals from midfield that season in Andy King.

Since then King has stopped scoring, Wellens has got worse and Drinkwater hasn't offered anything like he did when at Barnsley.

Therefore that's why I think the midfield will get mauled this season, they are just not good enough.

Stop being so negative we'll be ready come Peterborough

i dont think we really need koren tbh, between danns, drinky and james we have 3 great cm's who will probably be battling it out for 2 places with wellens as a great cover choice (we're in the championship guys, wellens is a good backup at least) then we'll have great attacking force with our wingers and forwards

Koren was missing from the Hull squad that got beat by Doncaster on Tuesday night. Sickness was the reason, Hmmmm. :P

Beckford/Marshall swap deal?

Perhaps with the abundance in choice for the centre midfield role, Pearson maybe has an idea where he wants the creative outlet to come from. It obviously depends how we play and our game plan but if your talking attacking midfielders, whose to say Pearson hasn't eyeballed one of them to work on a new creative and further forward role.

For example : before he joined I'm pretty sure Ben Marshall was played exclusively as a winger. It was identified that he had great intelligence, good pace and strength and was able to manipulate space and particularly manipulate the ball , into the net from 30 yards.

So I don't know maybe he will identify certain aspects of the midfielders we have and ask one to work on and play the more advanced role and tell him to let the others worry about working back.

Marshall?!

He missed the Burton game because of illness, I wasn't being serious.

Koren's agent has stated today that he is on the verge of signing an extension of contract with Hull. His agent has been it talks with us but his first wish was to stay put with a decent contract in terms of years. Looks like he is staying at Hull.

I think you've made a very good point. In Marshall, Drinkwater and James, we have three young central midfielders who still have a lot of their learning to do. I think Marshall already looks like he could make a very good CAM, and maybe Drinkwater could too one day. I don't know too much about James, but as he can play centre half, the defensive side of his game can't be too bad, and maybe he can be moulded into a good holding midfielder. Also, King might still improve, and apparently Knockaert can play in the hole.

I'm glad we're picking up so many young players. There's so many advantages with doing this over old players - their value almost always rises, they're generally improving, they can potentially be part of the team for years to come, they won't have many bad habits and as I've said, it's easier to teach them new tricks - they're more malleable.

Also a very good point. We have had many great example over the last few seasons of teams that play a certain way and have the right players to do so.

The likes of qpr, Norwich even Newcastle etc all had very good seasons but for me , if you can try and get your own team playing like reading did last season then your on to a winner , literally.

On paper they had some players who were 'rejects' from elsewhere and players that most oter teams would turn down let alone have warm their bench. They brought in very intelligent players and worked on the players they had to learn different roles to remain unpredictable and a threat but it was obvious that each player knew their own duties.

We lacked this last season, when we were a threat we never remained a threat long enougha and usually conceded and sometimes despite players being in their preferred position, we looked lost and the team had arguments among themselves as confusion rained over whose man was that or who was meant to be tracking back etc.

Pearson loves to bring in players that can play in more than one position ,are hard working with good stamina that are willing to learn and communicate well.

Reading didn't really have any star players although kebe was deemed their main threat he largely played on the wing. They had leigertwood and Mullins , after Karacan got injured, none of which are over creative. Then with the dynamism in players like Robson-kanu, Noel hunt and even the set piece expertise of Ian Harte made the one thing we badly desire and that's the winnig mentality.

So for me, as much as koren is a great player I don't think Pearson will bring him in and potentially rule out one of the new or existing centre mids. It just depends on how Pearson wants us to play and where our threat will come from and if he felt we badly needed a CAM then I think by now he would've sorted it.

Meanwhile, City look set to miss out on Hull's Slovenian midfielder Robert Koren, inset.

City have made an offer for the 31-year-old, who has been stalling over committing his future to the Tigers and has a buy-out clause in his existing contract should a club offer a trigger amount.

Koren's agent Sam Stapleton said City had made an offer, but the player was now hopeful of agreeing a new contract to keep him at the KC Stadium.

"There was genuine interest from Leicester and a bid was made, but Robbie's first thought was to try to stay with Hull if there was a possibility," said Stapleton.

"The manager (Steve Bruce) has shown his desire to keep Robbie and this has gone a long way with him.

"Robbie looks after himself, is fit and has many years left in him.

"He still has a huge desire to play in the Premier League and hopes that this new contract will enable him to do that with Hull."

Stapleton added: "We are close to agreeing a new contract with Hull and Robbie is keen to try to wrap it up this week as he wants to concentrate on the season in front of him."

The form Marshall was on last season means I would prefer to see Marshall played as attacking midfielder rather than Koren. To develop Marshall needs to play and it would be harsh for him to lose his place to an older player.

My only concern is that Marshall is still very young and even though it is important for him to play, we need to give him a break too. I Koren the right player to be deputising for Marshall? I doubt it, especially when we already have Gallagher.

So I suspect Koren to Leicester is just agent speak for give us a bigger contract.

ps - maybe we will see a different Gallagher now we have wingers and he can play in his preferred central role?

If Gallagher played behind the striker in a 4 2 3 1 formation he wouldn't have any defensive duties. Meaning he'd be able to roam about and pick the ball up and ping it about. No tracking back. He'd score 15 - 20 goals in that position easily. Hes not very pacey either, but he wouldnt need to be that quick to play behind the striker if nugents up top chasing the ball down. We shall see though

Think you may be right. Not sure he'd score 15-20 but you never know. Would like to see Marshall play a few games there too

Koren's agent should get a big pat on the back for this. What other way to get Hull to offer him a new contract than for him to be linked to their 'rivals' Leicester? Personally never believed there was anything in this story to begin with!

I don't like Gallagher at all, but to be fair, I wouldn't mind seeing this happen, at least giving it a try. I always thought his natural position was just behind anyway, and he certainly has the ability to create a few chances. It's just that we'll be back to the old one player up front, probably struggling to hold up the ball. Worth a try though, like I said.

Close it before Strovolos and the other Hull permavirgins infest it with their unwelcome presence again.
