People need to stop going on about Koren we will be fine without him it's the defence that needs sorting before the season starts!

We are not fine. The midfield still lacks a proper creative player.

So people are saying we lack a creative midfielder and a defensive midfielder.

Poor old Danns, James, Drinkwater, King and Wellens. If only someone had told them that the general midfield roles doesn't exist any more.

But we have too many "general midfielders" the same type players will hardly ever work, as King and Wellens proved last season, and when Drinkwater came in he wasn't much better.

People keep going back on a Mark Davies type player, but honestly it's something we miss; however we will see this season if Marshall is capable of playing in that sort of role because last season he looked incredible in an attacking midfield position. Like I have said though in the past couple of days, a defensive midfielder alongside Danns would be far better than Danns and Drinkwater.

You may have different views Babylon, but some including myself think we are missing that key defensive midfielder or that key attacking midfielder.

They all do jobs for the team, but I don't believe they have the ability to unlock defences creatively.

King is a good defender and clever finisher, Wellens can slow the game down if needed, Danns will harry, Drinkwater will keep it simple. I don't know much about James so I couldn't tell you what he does, he might be the answer?

Well I don't think Danns, King or Wellens are actually anything alike. Drinkwater I'm unsure about as he struggled, but against us for Barnsley he was the "creative midfielder" picking passes and creating chances.

Personally I think Danns will be asked to play the "defensive" role this year. He is quick, bags of energy and isn't afraid of putting a tackle in when needed. His only problem is his ball retention lets him down too often after he's put in a great tackle and broken up the play.

James is unknown and until I see him play I don't know where he fits into it. But being an ex centre back I'd imagine he can defend and put a tackle in.

Danns can do a job all over the midfield, because when you mention "general midfielders", he is our key general midfielder, he does defend and he does attack, but we can't rely on Danns as a defensive midfielder, because we all know he really likes to get forward aswell.

James yes is unknown, but it seems he won't start, Drinkwater will. Will James be the defensive midfielder we have lacked for some time, but due to height and the way he plays he looks far too similar to Wellens, I just want him to be capable on the physical side of things and add some bite to the midfield, a little snapper like Leeds have with David Norris.

I still believe though if Danns and Drinkwater start in central midfield, they will get torn apart in most games, Peterborough ain't the most exciting team but their new signing Michael Bostwick is a class act, very physical and will want to impress in his first game of the season. Still think we lack that physical midfielder, whether that comes as a tall defensive midfielder like Trotter or a snapper like David Norris, we will lack something, as Wellens is out injured and went dramatically down hill last season.

Wait and see KF, wait and see....

Had a groundhog day moment there.

I personally think that maybe we'll see both Danns and Drinkwater sitting in front of the back 4 in a 4-2-3-1 formation. Danns to be the busier of the 2 with Drinkwater keeping it simple. 1 of the 2 can roam forward with the other sitting back. As regards to creativity this will come from Marshall, Knockeart and Vardy, playing behind Nugent. Between them they should have enough pace, skill and flair to unlock a tight defence. Also this formation wouldn't require the fullbacks to get forward as often so the defense might not be as exposed as last year. That's what I'd do anyway, based purely on what we've heard of the new boys, might change my mind after we've seen them play.

All last season everyone kept saying " lets see where we are at the end of the season "

In the end we ended up nowhere -but it quelled the anger & frustation at the time .

So bo***** to it , lets debate the points now !!!!!!

We dont want that shit again ,

Just think it all depends on what James is like Col.

Just can't help think we still lack that physical presence, but Sunderland on Saturday might tell us a few things.

If I was picking the team that is pretty much what it would look like too.

I've said before that with the players we have, 4-4-2 looks the weakest formation we could play due to only having two in midfield. Pearson has played 4-4-2 in every pre-season game I believe and you would think he would play the formation he intended to use? As for Koren, I wouldn't be happy with Koren as part of a 2 man midfield because I don't think he is particularly defensive, but he would fit into 4-2-3-1 very nicely.

Maybe he will surprise us.

Pearson has assembled his squad including his midfield. It's doubtful anyone else will come into the midfield as we have many players competing there already.

So, yes we need to wait and see if it works. You can debate it all you want but it is what it is.

I'd like Spearing.. Don't mean we are gonna get him. So we have no other choice other than to wait and see.

Let's have the debate 10 games in. By then we'll know more.

I haven't seen any of the pre season games, was gonna go Lincoln  so I can't comment, But the players I listed could quite easily fit into both formations, depending on how the game is going, with Marshall and Knockeart on the wings and Vardy joing Nuget up top.

I think the beauty of the 4-2-3-1 formation (again purely going on what we've heard of the new guys, Vardy and Knockeart in particular) is that the 3 behind the front man can swap and change at will. Marshall and Knockeart can play anywhere across the 3, Vardy can come in from out wide to the box and lose his marker. Could create choas in opposing defences. Depending on the defensive capabilties of the 2 new boys and their willingness to track back, we could flodd the midfield while defending.

It's easy this football management lark

Good post! I hope to see this at some point this season - I really think it could be very effective.

Re. the fullbacks, even if they were required to go forward, I still think we'd be alright. Konchesky has a great engine and is very reliable, and De Laet is meant to be very quick. It just remains to be seen whether he's better positionally than Peltier, but it can't be too difficult. I don't think Peltier was awful, but that side of his game did let us down too many times.

I think we'll get one more defender before the start of the season. Normally clubs have 7 or 8 games to assess their squad before the August deadline arrives. It may be a little rushed this year as we will have only played 5 games to judge our squad, but I think there will be a some arriving and going. (Predict Waghorn or Schlupp out on loan, Gallagher and maybe King to leave) I've no idea who might arrive although I'd like either Koren or Spearing (for differeing reasons).

When they learn how to spell 'imminently' I might even start listening.

Koren who was subject to interest from Leicester is set to shun a move the the East Midlands in favour of remaining at The Tigers.

Great band.

Its all over the Dull forums that Koren has agreed to a new contract with Dull and will sign today or tomorrow morning. Philip Buckingham put this on twitter.
