Collymore Posted 3 August 2012 Posted 3 August 2012 Now I know a lot of the muslim countries are letting women compete for the first time, which is a good thing but I'm gob smacked at how slow some of these athletes are. I've just watched the women's 100m heats and there was a woman from Yemen that finished in 14 secs trying her heart out! I mean 14 seconds!! It's a tad embarrassing if you ask me.
Nick Posted 3 August 2012 Posted 3 August 2012 If you are the best your country has got, you deserve to go - that's the Olympic spirit that should be embraced in my opinion. We need a few 'Eddie the Eagles' a few guys who jump in the pool and swim the entire length, 'side stroke' under water like they've actually had a stroke. Otherwise we may as well just watch Chinese athletics because its a higher standard.
ithuriel Posted 3 August 2012 Posted 3 August 2012 Good for her, she may be the best that country has at present and she has tried her best.
Guest Bilo Posted 3 August 2012 Posted 3 August 2012 What Nick said really, if you're the best your nation has to offer then you deserve to compete. That's the Olympic spirit, absolutely no snobbery towards athletes who come from countries where their chosen sport perhaps isn't so well-funded, established or enjoys the same levels of participation as others.
Collymore Posted 3 August 2012 Author Posted 3 August 2012 Good for her, she may be the best that country has at present and she has tried her best. There's no way in a million years that the quickest female for 100m in a country is 14 seconds.
Guest Bilo Posted 3 August 2012 Posted 3 August 2012 There's no way in a million years that the quickest female for 100m in a country is 14 seconds. As this is the first time Yemen has sent female athletes to an Olympic Games, she probably is.
Collymore Posted 3 August 2012 Author Posted 3 August 2012 As this is the first time Yemen has sent female athletes to an Olympic Games, she probably is. Im not sure people are aware of just how slow 14 secs is for the 100m. I would go far as to say its less than the average time you would expect from a healthy female from any country, let alone an athlete.

21st Century Fox Posted 3 August 2012 Posted 3 August 2012 Considering the Athletics Associations in Muslim countries are almost definitely run by men, I can't imagine they've put too much emphasis on sourcing and training the top female athletes, but as mentioned before if you're the best your nation has to offer you've every right to take part in the Olympics, it's the whole point.

I would go far as to say its less than the average time you would expect from a healthy female from any country, let alone an athlete. With all the state of the art technology and facilities in Yemen, as well as a great pool of athletes you've got a very good point.
Guest Bilo Posted 3 August 2012 Posted 3 August 2012 14 seconds is a crap 100m time, no denying that, but considering what she's up against in terms of a national Olympic committee that only sent women under pressure from other nations and the associated lack of funding and training, she's done well. I don't buy the idea that any fit and healthy woman could run 100m in 14 seconds, she would have to be very fit and undergo at least some training to make that time. It's not as easy as it looks.
Trav Le Bleu Posted 3 August 2012 Posted 3 August 2012 You also need to find a woman who wants to do it. This in countries where for hundreds of years women have been brought up not to stand out. PS, at least she didn't have to cheat to win a cycling team sprint medal.
Finnegan Posted 3 August 2012 Posted 3 August 2012 **** off could every vaguely healthy woman run 14 seconds.
Guest Bilo Posted 3 August 2012 Posted 3 August 2012 **** off could every vaguely healthy woman run 14 seconds. Was gonna say. I'd consider 14 seconds a fairly reasonable time myself as a reasonably fit and healthy 28 year old man.

Guest Bilo Posted 3 August 2012 Posted 3 August 2012 Fat ****. I must be somewhat fit, my breasts don't bounce when I run any more.

SOCCERROO FOX Posted 6 August 2012 Posted 6 August 2012 It's hard to find the time to train for some women when there not let out of the kitchen.

I disagree, id like a few people on here to go and run the 100 metres and put their times... im tipping 14 seconds isnt that bad. Cmon Collymore... time yself and give us the results

Jon the Hat Posted 6 August 2012 Posted 6 August 2012 I suspect they picked someone who was not going to try and run for Team GB in the next Olympics, as it were.
SOCCERROO FOX Posted 6 August 2012 Posted 6 August 2012 Brace, brace, brace. I'm resonable safe in here the backwaters of the forum where females dare to visit.
Guest Bilo Posted 6 August 2012 Posted 6 August 2012 Are you suffering from Olympic Finger yet Roo Fox?
