Very impressed that Nige finally dispensed with his old guard to start the game - perhaps a penny has dropped somewhere?

Yes for you, now that what has been clear to most of us for months has now happened?

Don't think there is a penny that needs dropping.

It's all about whether you've replaced the players with players who can make a better team or not.

Dropping from 5th to finish 10th then 9th would suggest that whether the players were better individually or not, the team certainly wasn't.

But now with the arrival of Drinky, Marshall, James, Knockaert we have the all important 'mix' that finally means Wellens, Gally & co aren't the primary players they've had to be since Nige left regardless of who's arrived, although I'm absolutely certain that they along with Danns, Nuge & others have more than a key part to play as the games come thick and fast.

Now I'm sober I can give my verdict.

Peterborough came with a game plan to get men behind the ball, to stifle and to frustrate. I don't think they had any real intention to try to win the game.

In the first half I thought we lacked a spark in the midfield. That player who could, just with their own ability, unlock the Posh defence with a killer ball. Yes, we looked fit, well organised, defensively really solid and energetic. But again, IMO, lacking a Robert Koren type player, or a Gary Parker... Just someone who was going to do something a bit special.

In the second half we looked more threatening and it appeared that Nige had probably given them a bollocking at half time.

Lloyd was creating mayhem on the left, but again his final product was sorely lacking. Jermaine and Vardy were linking up well and the latter could be the signing up front that we've needed for some time. He reminded me of a younger, faster Dickov. Never giving up on anything, chasing, harassing and generally being a nuisance.

When Morgan scored I thought it was effectively game over. The introduction of King was inspired on the part of Pearson. That was exactly the right game for King to come into. We were controlling things, he had time on the ball and the space to make the dangerous runs into the box, which led to his beautifully taken goal. Peterborough had a couple of late chances when they brought on Emile Sinclair, which made me wonder why he wasn't introduced earlier, but I never feared they were gonna get back into the game.

All in all, a very solid start to the season. The midfield looked better, more energetic and in Drinky we have a player to build the team around. If there is one concern I have, however, it's whether we are going to possess enough midfield creativity to score enough goals, especially away from home. Drinkwater and James are young and will only get better. Throw another really good, creative, passing midfielder into this team and I think we could really go places. However, such players are at a premium so we will need to see whether the current crop are going to be good enough.

Word of caution. Peterborough's team looked a collection of players from a division below. Their passing was poor, didn't have a ball carrier or any forward thrust. They will need to improve big time. We looked a better set of footballers, I.e. the actual ability to get passed a player.

......................

Morning Col, I thought our 'back 6' were far too deep first half and with Marshall and Dyer staying wide we had no one in forward areas to prompt our strikers. The result was a laboured unproductive first half.

Started the second half with a bit more energy and, as you said, once Morgan got his goal there was only ever going to be one winner, Posh were poor though.

I feel that Marshall could well be the answer to the lack of creativity though he has to play centrally to do that, hard to see how NFP can do that playing 4-4-2....... :dunno:

Peterborough put in one of the most embarrassing displays I've ever seen, it's when you consider everything, the fact they've got a real reputation for scoring goals, that first half was utterly appalling although it picked up at the end, they literally spent 75% of the half passing around their defence and hoofing it long once they were bored of it, and getting nowhere as our back 4 was braced for everything (not much) that they threw at us. Add to this they made such basic mistakes so often, I honestly do consider them a contender to go down now.

It's the kind of display that doesn't suit Beckford, I didn't think he was bad but he's not constantly on the move like Vardy/Nugent are, I'd have put Nugent on for him at HT personally because it would've forced them to change big time.

But it wasn't needed because the second half saw us equal our league tally of goals from corners, cracking header from Morgan and it's so refreshing to see we've worked on that.

The second goal just oozed quality all-round, Vardy did fantastically well and seems to make some very intelligent passes, although he does seem to technically lack it at times, King's finish was the kind of thing I'd expect from Lampard. Absolute perfection.

Said for ages it'd be a 2-0 win and so glad we delivered, will do player ratings and special mentions to Vardy, Moore, Morgan, Drinkwater and King.

Benny Marshall's set pieces are going to be key for us this season IMHO. I thought we were very wasteful with set pieces last season until BM arrived. If we're going to get promotion we need to be much more threatening from dead ball situations.

I thought we played without fear , gave Posh a bit too much room & respect first half ,especially Tomlin & Boyd , we stepped it uo a gear 2nd half &

wasted them ,

Also thought De Leat & James looked assured , very encouraging

I thought DeLaet was very good; fit as a fiddle and rarely misused the ball. Vardy lively and not just interested in his own game (cf pass for Kingy). Wes and Liam solid too and would stick with them at Charlton. Wouldn't it be good to go on a run, eh? Two wins in a row at the first time of asking.

PS The little bunch of Pboro knobs encircled by the OB at the end of the game and frog marched back to the station made me laugh. Pboro Ultras ha, ha, ha.

I think the Peterborough game was a little deceiving. They were piss poor.

This coming week is going to be a much better indicator of things to come.

TBF I dont think theyll be anywhere near the drop , Tomlin & Boyd has us a bit giddy in the 1st half

.............top 13 Id say

I atually think Peterborough came with the same game plan that Florist came with to the KP and a lot of comments were about a much improved team! They actually at times passed the ball very well and looked comfortable on it,I think it was us being tentative 1st half where the problem lay not Posh negativity.Let's face it a lot of clubs are going to employ the same tactics and IMO our pace and creativity...... Drinky,James, Marshall, Knocky, Kingy, Dannsy, Lloyd, Vardy, Beckford, Nugent, Schlup (various combos) Futacs, that will allow us not to worry about others as we can now find the key to open up defences as we have the options! I think also with clever use of substitutes and subtle rotations we will remain fresher and also become more ruthless as games and confidence increase! I really am very positive about our potential for thisseason :D:chant:

I've always thought well of Boyd and think he'd look much better in a decent side.

Tomlin looked like he's carrying about two stone over. I thought he looked in a shocking state for a pro footballer at the start of a season and Ferguson needs to take some blame for that.

Bookies have them to be bottom three.

Dyer is this, Knockaert is that, Wellens is crap, Gallagher and Waghorn will be sold. One bloke even talks about 4-4-2 as if it is an unorthodox formation which no team has ever been successful with.

I think some people are being a little over analytical considering we have played one league game and still have not seen all of our players feature.

YESTERDAYS REF - your probably reading this and thinking, yea... and what?? that's probably because we didn't really notice him all game, sign of a good ref!! What a nice change it was though to have a half decent ref for once. Lets hope it carry's on like this for the rest of the season!

Think we are due a few decisions to go our way...

That's three points, and good, but we aren't going to get many easier home games than this, and I understand we were outplayed in the first half.

I will be at next weeks game, which should prove more challenging. We really MUST be up for this one.

you say they passed it well and were comfortable, but all they did was flipping pass it round there back four. They had nothing once it got past the half way line...

Try listening to someone other than the opposition manager. I am glad you will there next time as yours is the sort of positive attitude that really improves the atmosphere in football stadiums.

I think they also had some good interchange passing in midfield just no killer pass & good defending from us, try reading the rest of my post I am very positive about us which surely the most important thing? Just don't think P'boro were as awful as some make out.

i was at the game and thought first half wasnt the best saying we looking to go up but second half when we got that first goal we was playing like we should do for going up, its only the first game and if we carry on like second half we will be up there.

Quite if they were so awful and we're so good how come we did little of note in the 1st half / until we scored. Plenty of teams will play like Peterboro away from home we've done it ourselves on many occasions doesn't make them poor all over the pitch, maybe they had little to offer up front but they were better at not giving the ball away or misplacing passes than we were first half when I thought we looked fairly poor in terms of teamwork and producing anything worth while.

There's little point in slagging teams off for being defensive we need to be good enough to break them down early on then I doubt you'd see the same degree of negative play.

I seem to remember getting accused of similar stuff when we were in the PL under MON, negative, long ball, hard men was our reputation and somewhat unfair to say the least.
