Freeman's Wharfer Posted 18 August 2012 Posted 18 August 2012 Solid. Which is what we were anything but at times last season. I thought that was a very encouraging display. We'll play better teams than that but we looked solid at the back and had enough quality in midfield to dominate in that area. I've been wanting us to sign a real enforcer in the middle of midfield but if Drinkwater can do what he did today, breaking things up and intercepting things, then we might not need anyone. James looked tidy as well. Moore, for his age and inexperience did very well. The shirt's his for now and that's all he could have asked for, it's up to him to keep doing what he did today to keep it. De Laet first half looked hit and miss, improved in the second. Vardy showed glimpses of class but looks like it might take him a few games to settle in to playing at this level - Beckford was coaching him through throughout. As for Beckford himself, there seemed to be a little more effort and desire - hopefully there's more to come. I was delighted for Andy King. In one strike of a ball he showed his class, of all of the other players in our squad I'm doubtful many (if any) could have done that. To all of you that had written him off because of one injury-hit season have a bit of that - not so invisible when he does that is he?! Yes it was only one game but moments like that show how good he really is. Any time he's been out of the team he always applies himself in the right manner, works hard and forces his way back in. Talking of which I wasn't too impressed by Nugent's body language today, saw him smashing a couple into the stand and messing around and when he came on he didn't look as fired up as he might. It's very harsh for him to be out of the team after last season but there are ways and means of getting back in. Have a look at Andy King and he might realise them. It will be interesting to see what we can do at Charlton on Tuesday, let's get that momentum going!

Thracian Posted 18 August 2012 Posted 18 August 2012 Three points from the first game, no goals conceded and two goals towards the 85 or so we're going to need....yes, an encouraging start and with a whole lot of incidental pluses to be thankful for. But, for all that, Pearson continues to leave me well short of excited. We killed off Posh rather like a giant python might - by slowly squeezing the life out of them. It was clinical rather than rousing. And, sadly, this was another one-half performance. In fact we were apologetic rather than assertive until Posh finally had their first threatening shot early in the second half and finally woke us from our mental slumber. Thereafter I was impressed and the more so after Morgan had scored and the old, almost forgotten Kingy had taken the field and added a touch of class and accuracy to our efforts. He'd demonstrated a swift and sure touch for some time before his goal but that strike was precision defined and Vardy's assistance shouldn't be underestimated either because, not for the first time, he made the space, got his head up early and delivered the perfect final ball for Kingy to slot into the smallest gap with all the calmness of a silent assassin. Looking around our team there seemed no doubt we have the ammunition to plunder sufficient goals this season providing Pearson doesn't allow us to squeeze the space. Again in happened too often where our wingers moved inside and no-one had the drive or presence of mind to maintain the width quickly enough. It all made life easier for a distinctly average and unambitious-looking Peterborough. We also stood off Peterborough far to respectfully to begin with and only began to dominate when when we pressed much more positively after the break. Happily the welcome but rare sight of a centreback rising to win a goalscoring header from Marshall's corner and King's goal direct from Vardy's work down the left flank emphasised how much more lethal we are when the final passes come in from wide positions which inevitably leave defenders vulnerable to being stretched. It wasn't the only occasion. Dyer, forever criticised for not providing a final ball, in fact provided a delicious break and cross from the left which must have bounced two or three metres inside their far post with no-one hurtling in Cottee style to add the finishing flourish. When King did "arrive" in the box, he only reminded us of a vital component that's been missing - someone to arrive late and deliver the sort of controlled shots that have a chance of scoring. With the likes of Marshall, Beckford, Vardy, Dyer, Knockaert and a hopefully in-form King, it’s clear we have players who can present such a variety of problems to opposing defenders as to represent something of a nightmare. But I’m still concerned about how determination our full-backs are to help us sustain attacks by latching onto loose balls particularly just outside the area when initial attacks have been thwarted. But no matter for now. True Posh had three good chances and Kasper was called on to make some notable saves but the visitors finished well beaten and with our passing improving considerably as the game wore on there was no way they’d be mounting a recovery. Man of the March? Well, Vardy stood out. He works hard but thinks hard too and seems to be the perfect blend of genuine striker but selfless analyzer of what's around him. All our attackers will benefit from having him to play off and he clearly spells danger both from wide positions or from the centre, from his ability to see a first-time pass or his refreshing willingness to take people on. Morgan deserved credit for notching our first Championship goal of the season and for settling our early self-doubt. Kasper was at his highly professional and enthusiastic best but, for me, Kingy’s goal – though not especially spectacular – was a masterpiece of creation and execution from the two players involved. It settled the game and it capped what was an influencial illustration of the rejunevnated midfielder at his positive best. Altogether an encouraging start.
Daggers Posted 18 August 2012 Posted 18 August 2012 I looked at my Thracianometer, gave it a couple of taps, and the future looks variable with some windy bursts.
Simmo86 Posted 18 August 2012 Posted 18 August 2012 Apparently our chief scout was at Barnsley against Middlesborough I wonder which player/players we were watching? It was a sarcastic tweet by the Barnsley press officer due to DD transfer last year
Happy Fox Posted 18 August 2012 Posted 18 August 2012 It was a sarcastic tweet by the Barnsley press officer due to DD transfer last year Alright didn't realize, Barnsley's sarcasm it was bit hard to deduce really
Steven Posted 18 August 2012 Author Posted 18 August 2012 Thought Nugent was alright when he came on.
Heart-Shaped Fox Posted 18 August 2012 Posted 18 August 2012 Bit of a grind but the result is what we wanted, knew we would win today though it wasnt the complete performance.
Simmo86 Posted 18 August 2012 Posted 18 August 2012 Alright didn't realize, Barnsley's sarcasm it was bit hard to deduce really Bit pointless really considering DD wasn't even their player
dedlock Posted 18 August 2012 Posted 18 August 2012 Job done. We'll know more this time next week what prospects we have. Some consistency, after last season, and putting a run of results together will be good.
MGLCFC Posted 18 August 2012 Posted 18 August 2012 Bit of a grind but the result is what we wanted, knew we would win today though it wasnt the complete performance. Good - these are the games where we dropped points last year. Glad we've shown early on we can grind a result out.
leicesterseddon Posted 18 August 2012 Posted 18 August 2012 They were dreadful and only interested in a draw, both teams were awful in the first half. Better in the second and we deserved the win in the end. Convinced we will be much better defensively this season, although for the moment I don't think we've added much quality to the squad at all. Time will tell if Pearson can get them playing. Official attendence of 23,863, which isn't amazing but not bad in the circumstances. However, there were large areas of empty seats in the East Stand and even in the Kop, whilst the Family Stand was almost full. Would be interested to see an attendence figure based on the number of adult ticket sales... Anyway, onwards and upwards

Bluetintedspecs Posted 18 August 2012 Posted 18 August 2012 A journey of a thousand miles starts with a single step........good first step a little tentative 1st half but when we unleashedin 2nd half very promising indeed! Lot more positives than negatives solid at back MF looking assured and sharp creative and quick going forward (2nd half) and with our options we will be a handfull for most teams
linemakers Posted 18 August 2012 Posted 18 August 2012 Mixed performance, good scoreline! Some good stuff out there today, some not so good stuff...mainly in the first half. Can't complain too much though as the scoreline makes nice reading. Beckford and James were not really in the game for me. Dyers composure in front of goal was shocking. Vardy played well, did great for the goal. Good to see Andy King back on the scoresheet too! I would probably start King/Danns, Nugent and Knockaert next match though. Good job your not the manager then
LcFc_Smiv Posted 18 August 2012 Posted 18 August 2012 Finally back, great to get 3 points to start the season. I've seen a lot of people slating the first half and in a way, as frustrating as it was I thought we played it well, P'boro were happy to sit with the ball in their own half, inviting us to pressure them and then hit us as we pushed. If we had chased that first half we would have to be very fit to keep putting the pressure on 11 men sitting passing the ball around the back. Instead we let them do the work, and just waited for our chances to come, yes it's frustrating but we had to be patient and in doing so we got the 3 points. Great performance from everyone today!
marbelladave Posted 18 August 2012 Posted 18 August 2012 Evening all...... Got home a couple or three hours ago but some cold beer and a homemade biryani (thanks Mrs M) has kept me pretty occupied...... So to the game, forget the result, the first half was poor, we sat far too deep and failed to contest the midfield, fortunately 'boro had absolutely no intention of getting forward so we got away with it. We failed to get any control and for a while it was back to the bad old days of last season, with Dyer and Marshal staying wide and away from the action and everyone else reluctant to get forward, Vardy and Beckford got little support. Second half started rather better, 'boro threatened, then City started to build up some pressure. Yet to see a replay but Morgan seemed to barge his way past the defender but the ref saw nothing wrong, and that, pretty much, was the game. 'Boro had to come out which actually gave us the chance to show our superiority, King's goal, good though it was, was only one of a string of decent chances and we really ended up winning comfortably. Overall, good result, (2nd) half decent performance but must do better.......
vandamman Posted 18 August 2012 Posted 18 August 2012 Very boring first half, but perhaps to be expected being first game and a new team. Obviously 2nd half was much better, we ran the show and showed Peterborough up for the shower of shite they are. Good to see our full backs venturing forward and causing problems. Hopefully we can make the KP a winning ground again this season.
